2022-23 in Review
It has been another quiet year for the Tanbok Project, a waiting game for our much delayed construction project at Tanbok Primary School. With many trustees finding themselves to be new parents (or grandparent, in one case!), there wasn’t much bandwidth to take on additional challenges. That’s not to say there wasn’t work to be done - we continue to recieve requests from communities to assist with repairs or rebuilding projects for buildings lost in any one of the four category 5 cyclones to hit Vanuatu over the last 7 years. These are likely worthy requests that we are simply unable to respond to at the current scale of our small organisation. To compound matters, we also sadly said goodbye to one of our founding Trustees, Selena, who has moved on to new pastures - including starting out on her own thrilling parenting journey. We wish her all the best, even though she will be sorely missed.
This in mind, we continue to keep our ears to the wind for anyone who might be suited to joining our board of trustees or volunteering support in other ways. Do get in touch if you’re interested!
As the current financial year draws to a close, excitement and anticipation start to build with the Tanbok School construction project finally on track to commence in July 2023. It has been a long road to this point, and we finally enter the home straight. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, designs have been finalised, our construction partners CAUKIN Studio have appointed a leadership team, and the volunteer students are recruited. Over on the other side of the world, suppliers are lining up with quotations, the trickier materials are on order, and the Tanbok School Committee have commenced preparations for the team’s arrival. We end the period on the cusp of our next great adventure.
Outlook for Next Year
It’s looking like a big year ahead, in which we aim to:
-
Ensure smooth, timely delivery of the Tanbok Primary School construction and training programme;
-
Revisit Ranwas Primary School to evaluate the 2019 construction project
-
Conduct research to support development of the prototype cyclone housing project
-
Continue to nurture relations with the Tanbok Community, supporting bilateral cultural relations between the community and our international team
-
Consult with communities on the challenges they face and the solutions they would like to see from the Tanbok Project
-
Explore funding opportunities for future projects

Fundraising Report
The period between 2022-23 was one of our weaker fundraising performances, due to a number of factors - but primarily as a result of the much restricted capacities of our trustees to contribute to fundraising efforts due to their own conflicting responsibilities with childcare and work. Algorithm changes on social media platforms such as Facebook have also had a noticable (negative) impact on our social media visibility, leading to declined enquiries and offers of help. Meanwhile, the loss the invaluable gift aid service provided by Virgin Money Giving has left us fending for ourselves - a problem to be addressed over the coming year. Nevertheless, we were extremely grateful for a significant donation of over £1000 recieved from Sutton Grammar School following their World Book Day fundraising activities - they loved the idea that their celebration of books could also contribute to our library project at Tanbok Primary School! We also continued to recieve some regular donations from supporters, all of which will help ease the financial pressure on the upcoming project.
Pipeline Projects
Given the constant issue the board faces with our capacity to commit the time required to effectively develop - and monitor - high impact projects in Vanuatu from our situation in Europe, over the year ahead we willl be reflecting on the future viability to continue the charity. The board of trustees remain commited to successful delivery of the Tanbok School construction project later this summer, and will continue to explore the feasibility to deliver the subsequent prototype cyclone housing project that has been in our pipeline since TC Harold in 2020. It may be that after this, we wind down the operation - but a lot can happen in a year, and should tides change, we will certainly leap at any opportunity to increase capacity, and build on the success of our projects so far.
Goodbye Selena
Sadly the time has come to say goodbye to Selena, who is stepping down from her role as trustee and assistant treasurer effective from 2023. As a founding trustee, she has always been a great source of support - a guiding light for the board with her canny wisdom and in depth knowledge of the financial institutions that we are constantly having to navigate. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Selena for her steadfast presence and contribution over the last 7 years - you will be sorely missed! With no immediate replacement lined up, we are always open to applications from anyone who might be interested to join our board.
With Thanks
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all fundraisers and donors who have enabled us to continue with our mission in Vanuatu. We thank the communities in Vanuatu for their co-operation, dependability and inspiration. And we thank our board of trustees and affiliates for their energy, time, ideas and contributions that form the bedrock of our organisation.
