## **2021-22 in Review**
It has been a relatively quiet year for the Tanbok Project, in which the global COVID-19 pandemic has once again delayed the progress of our next scheduled construction project at Tanbok Primary School. With Vanuatu’s international borders remaining closed, and no long-term plans to re-open them published by the government, it was impossible to predict if or when the borders would reopen. Representatives from the community were presented with a number of options, ranging from postponing the project for another year to looking at an all-local construction based on our architectural partner, CAUKIN’s, designs, but without in-person support from them. In the end, regrettably yet inevitably, postponement was the chosen course of action.
In the meantime, we have continued with fundraising activities and explored ideas for how to remotely work with communities - easier said than done in this part of the world and with our diametrically opposed time zones! Our other pipeline plans for construction projects - such as prototype cyclone-proof dwellings, have also been shelved, pending more certainty on the border situation.
As the current financial year draws to a close, it’s a case of _deja vu,_ as we once again try to evaluate prospects for the Tanbok school build going ahead in the summer 2022. Vanuatu’s international borders remain closed, although the zero-Covid policy of the past two years is set to be scrapped following the first incidents of community transmission in February. What this means for the international borders remains to be seen, but prospects of ressurecting the project timeline to be on course for the July start date required by CAUKIN are rapidly diminishing. Hopefully, this time next year we can report on a brighter outlook!
## **Outlook for Next Year**
With prospects for the Tanbok school construction being able to take place in 2022 rapidly diminishing, and with two trustees welcoming new little ones into the world, the year is set to be a quieter one for the Tanbok Project. We will endeavour to -
- Maintain ongoing fundraising activities;
- Keep in touch with Tanbok Primary School, and develop a timeline for construction to begin in 2023;
- Consider feasibility of completing the prototype cyclone dwelling project also in 2023, including raising the necessary funds;
- Continue to be a voice for Vanuatu in the UK and a point of contact between the two nations.

## **Fundraising Achievements**
The period between 2021-22 saw many aspects of life in the UK gradually return to (a new) normal. Even so, as the threat of lockdowns diminished, COVID-19 transmission has continued, so large in-person events have remained inappropriate.
Nevertheless, we raised a respectable £5,000 to go towards next year’s projects. Nearly £2k of this was raised by our fabulous Virtual London Marathon runners (pictured above) - huge thanks to Nicole, Tom and Emily for their heroic efforts in running the race and raising a fantastic amount. Our Chair Rachel and her sister Helen opted to cut off several feet of hair (donated to the Princess Trust) in return for sponsorship, raising nearly £1k in the process. The remainder came from donations received through an online campaign on the anniversary of Cyclone Harold, regular donations received directly from supporters, and running sessions as part of CAUKIN’s virtual summer schools in return for donations.
Unfortunately, our main online fundraising platform, Virgin Money Giving, closed down in 2021, which is a great loss and will require us to seek an alternative over the following year. Please bear with us while we get this sorted.

## **COVID-19 Impact**
COVID19 continued to place limitations on our ability to fundraise: for example, our monthly pub quizzes are a thing of the past, and the pipe dream of a return of the Gala Dinner remains just that. But it has been COVID-19 international travel restrictions that truly grounded our ability to deliver our projects.
In March 2022, COVID19 finally escaped the quarantine system in Vanuatu and entered the community. Fatalities are on the rise as transmission enters a period of exponential growth. Thanks to a moderately successful vaccine roll out, there is some immunity in the population, but nevertheless our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected. As Vanuatu moves out of its zero-COVID phase, it is unclear if or when borders will reopen, but we will be ready to resume our plans once they do.

## **Pipeline Projects**
Many of our followers will be aware that the proposed Tanbok School library build has been in development for many years and faced many challenges. First scheduled for 2015, it was initially postponed due to Cyclone Pam, with the school all but razed to the ground. Then were the years of trying to find design partners who could upgrade the plans in order to maximise the longevity of the construction, as well as meeting the ever greater needs of the school. Then, due to the complexity of the design, came the decision to pilot some ideas in Ranwas first - the less hostile climate equating to a simpler project. Then came the dual disasters of the COVID-19 pandemic and Cyclone Harold, resulting in further delays and even greater damage to the school. Tentatively earmarked for summer 2022, it looks as though the project might be destined for yet another year of delay. We hope to bring you more promising news on this
Other projects in the pipeline have also stalled due to the uncertainty regarding COVID-19 travel restrictions into Vanuatu. Stalled, but not forgotten, these include requests we have received for support with buildings repair at various schools on Pentecost and Santo, a return to Ranwas to evaluate the performance of the classroom and library from 2019, as well as the potential high-impact prototype cyclone housing project.
Cyclone-proof housing is a vital step on the road to Vanuatu becoming more resilient to the ever-growing threat of extreme weather events, brought about by the Climate Emergency. We believe we can design and build a prototype cyclone-proof dwelling for the same cost as the average ‘permanent house’ currently favoured by Vanuatu’s self-builders (ie the entire non-urban population!). We would deliver the build as a training-program for local people, enabling them to emulate the design and techniques in the construction of their own homes.
It would be fantastic to be able to secure the funding over the next year to be able to deliver these projects in 2023.
