The Trustees of Market Harborwgh Drdma Society a￿ pkased to present this annual Feport lo rts
members, customers, and the pe￿p￿ of Mthel HarbNough. for Ihe 2022-23 season.
Harborough Theatre has enioyed an exceplsonalty successtsl year ticket sales to all eight shows
selling well and with foul complete sdl ouis. Audience lee(Iback has also been very positive. wth four
shows including a studio prtsducb.on gaining 5 ' revtews. We also gained from an increase in lettsngs
income due to an increase in ffiltn screenings undertaken by Harborough Cinefna following the
installation of a newdigital projeclorvknith alk)ws more receTrt blo¢ktrtJsters ar￿ Nab"onal TheatrelRoyal
Opera Holtse productions to be 5hovm in the theatre's main auditOriUTll.
Vve ian our second week-long Summer School for students aged between 8 and 18. Places were
subsidised by the theatre and sold at £75 per place (around haWthat charged for similar schemes in the
aieal. We also provided free places for chIld￿n in recelpt of free school meals although lake up wa5
not as high as we WDuld have liked_ The reactKJn from both student5 and parents was extremely postb.ve
th both the professional drama tea¢hefS and staff ￿ng Praised for pioducing two h￿h-qUalitY shows
at the end of a hugely enjoyable and valuable week of drama-based actiwbes.
Various imwovements were m3deto the buil(fing in linewrth ￿¢0MMer)datiOns made by its profe5sion81
adv¥sors induding the puwchase of a new Evac Chair to allow the safe evacuation of all visrtors to the
Iheatre. In addfiion. we invested c£13k in imp¥overnents to the stage This has re5ulte(l in the creation
of extra storage beneath the stage and a new access hatch as well as a complete resurfacing ol the
area to eliminate diStrach￿j squeaks during perfDmiances.
We also improved our training for a4 Fronl of House and Bar Volunteer tea￿% and produced new
Guidance for the Drama Committee and Bad(stsge CrewlTeams We have also introduced BasicAEting
Training for Adors
these are heavity subsidised to non-members {£5 per session) and free to
member5.
We also carrie¢J Strategic Review C￿Su￿t￿n and began Coll￿ting audience feedback and acting on
the informats.on gleaned. for example. intioducing regular ¢nter-departmental Oper3tions Meetings and
prtrproduction rneetings to pror￿te uAlaboration and the sharin9 of knO%￿edge between teams.
As part of L￿r 90th AnnNer5ary ¢elebration5 we intr(*Juced 3 new annual event to thank all our
volunteers and ran a yeadong exhib￿On showcasÈng the work of the theatre over the years. We also
piloted our first show at Arts F¥es¢o a hugefy succe55ful Arts Council funded event attiacting large
crowds to Market Harborough arml a uselul ￿atro￿ for promoting the theatre to the local and wder
re9ional communty.
We have recruited a new Patron for the scxiety. Youssef Kerkour is a BAFTA nominated professional
actor who has kn.ndty agreed to help by offering 4wrk5hops to MHDS members. He v￿1 be attending OL5r
Open Day in September and talking aiwt hs work wth the RSC.

classe5 for 75 students at the Theatre arKI a lurther 95 students across Leicestershire and
Ruiland_ It runs 8 classes sn all. Each GL8s5 perfoms an annual sh¢)w with 5 Classes
perfomiing at Harborough Theatre. Al sbjdents are treated as associate memitrs ofthe
Socsety and are encourage4J to audthon for suitable parts in main house productions.

Achievemerrfs arKI Successes
Harborough Theatre was recognised by Harborough District CUJ￿*1 as an imp£¥tsnt part of the Curtural
Quarter and has agfeed to work wth the Theatre and other stakeholders to improve the visibi5ity of the
arts in the town.
Harb)rough Theatre hdped local tharib.es to raise avrdreness of their spectfic Gauses ty hosting gala
nights and other fundrai$ing 8v8nts- in total over £7500 was put bado into the communty in the last
year alone.
Harborough Theatre has welcomed over 12.500 ￿$it0{S to Ihe theatre this year and has reached
another membership high 1+4501. NB this figure fluctuates seasonally but there has been a
steaty upward trend over Ihe183t t¥￿-three Yea￿ and we now have at) active volunteer base of plus
200 people.

tribiJte to our Premises Manager. Our volunteets also ￿deCOrated the theatre Lounge to make il more
appealing to theatre audientss.
Our part-time paid administrator has greatty In¢￿aSed Ihe Theatre's visibilty in the town, as he
interacts the public both pers{￿alty and though Ihe website and social media. He has also hosted
theatre volunteeis on his regular Harborough FM show to FXONK)te 0￿r show5 and activitie5.
We have 3 Continuing programrrE of TeviwrvJ and improwng the Wdy in bvhich we present the
Theatre to the community. induding a welpattended annual Open Day with tours and demonstrations
of our Crydft.
All Society members have the OPF)Ortunity to be invotved in acting, dsrecting, designing. building and
painting sets. deS￿nIng and operatsng sound: IwJhting. and spec1al effects, Stage managsng. making
and sourcing costumes and props. desigfting ed￿"[¥j and publish¢ng programmes. publicrty material,
the web site and producing 'Backstage' the mernbers quarterfy news￿tter. In addtiion. the￿ have
been regular emaile(I newsletters and both AGM in Novernbpr and Spring Generd Meeting in
April allowed rrEmbers to contribute to the ongoing devd(a)ment ofthe organisation.
We ￿ fortunate to have m3fty V￿lInteerS wlling to tal(e on shvt tetrn tasks, but like most voluntary
organisations we depend heavily on a fewfor the essential cooidinating. administrative and mana9erial
roles. A new Board ol Tnjstees was Approved at the SGM vknich took ￿aCe in May and will take office
on 1& AugusL

We earefully limit what we do to avoid over stretching our vclunteeT5 and. %thile not ruling out other art
forms such as music, fwus pnmarily on the drarnat￿ events for vknich our theatre is best suited.

Atthough we are gratefu1 that our stw audiences have continued to support us and that have been
very successlul in re¢rU￿.ng new members. we remain cautious at￿ut the possibk impact of the cost-
of4Ning crisi5 on people's des¥e for live Iheatre.
We are an ambtbous oroanisation and have often had to WTesle the problems of Success, name
having rn0￿ ideas and opportunities than our volunteers are capable of handling, and often L3rger
audien￿ than we could a¢comrnod*e. ￿lIst it would be tempting to outsouice more ofour acbwties,
we are conscious of our lulure SL5Stainabrfty and the￿fr￿e a￿ cafeful only to undertake projects that
we have the Tesources to sustain. As such. we continue to look at ideas foi improving the theatre
through the Strategic Rewew prooss and assoaated fea5ibilty studies to snform the devebprnent of
our fjve-year plan_
We wll 8180 continue to WOTk on the way we Promote ourselve$ wrfhin the commuftty. ranging tro
Improved extemal signage, use of social media. and selecting drama that w￿1 interest and attract new
peop￿ to the theatre. Inevitably this wi51 mean occasionalty including p￿yS that challengÈ as well as

Financial Report
Financial Accounts, attached, are p￿pared according to Chanty Accountin9 rutes and are Intended to
Compty with FRS 102.
MHDS follows the convenb.ons ot accrual accounb.ng to make year-orpyear comparisons easiei, and
to give a truer picture of the financtal p05ilion at the end ot the financial year.
The Society's balance sheet does not indurte the value of its principal asset. the theatrè building,
because it is effective￿ inalEnable. Furthemore, the kniety ￿Vn$ a quanbty of equipment aTrd

During the year to 31 July 2023, no Trustee received payment, eX￿pt for reimbursernent of minor
expendrture incuryed on t￿hat[ of the Society. Except foi the direct sponsorship ol our seasonal
publicty biochure, no income was receNed for a designated purpose. All fundraising and donations
were intended ￿ the general purpDses of the Society. Therefore no Restricted Fund is shovm in the
accounts.
MHDS is not requirecl to have a fu51 audit but the semces of an Independent Examiner to examine
and report on its financial accounts. The Independent Examinerfs report confirms that the accounts,
togelhef thi8 annu31 tepjrt. follow the ChaTty CotHmi55ions SORP guidelines las amendedl ar¥J
satisfy the iequirements of Chartty law.
Duè to good Ma￿￿e[Rent and a generous bequest the Drama Society is in a strong financ￿91 posi(ion
ancl its financial reserves have recovered to pre-CovKI shut down levels. The Trustees ¢onsider current
reseNes are sufficient for the theatre trj operale safely and with due consideration of its me[T￿er$ and
