VRUK raises funds and works in partnership with Gihembo Forward (GiFo), a local NGO to support and manage an early years children's centre and nursery school at Gasundwe in Gihombo, Rwanda.

The funds VRUK send to GiFo pay for the following, - a representative, - a building to deliver services in the surrounding community, - the services of a education staff, cook and night watchman, - teaching resources, - protein enhanced porridge for the children who come to school malnourished, - Income generation projects. Summary of the main activities The trustees of VRUK make regular visits and require verbal, written and undertaken for the public photographic reports to oversee, benefit in relation to these • the ongoing development of the children’s centre and ensure the objects (include within this service is of good quality, section the statutory • to ensure the income generation projects are being implemented to declaration that trustees have agreed specification (Agreements of Expectations). had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity VRUK are also seeking to improve healthcare provision (for the children and Commission on public benefit) their parents) by improving links with existing local agencies.

The public benefits are considerable as the work of VRUK focuses on early education in an inaccessible part of Rwanda. Approximately 100 children between 4 and 6 years of age attend the nursery and benefit from the enhanced nutrition provided each day and the interactive learning which enables them to make good progress with basic skills. The children leaving the nursery to start walking to their local primary school (about 2 hours walk away) are stronger physically and intellectually than without this service. The nursery and children's centre has enabled parents, particularly mothers to benefit from seeing the interactive learning and also the opportunity to participate in income generation projects.

Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Section D Achievements and erformance p

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

The period from June 2020 to July 2021, was one of continuing development in spite of the Covid pandemic and the consequent impact on livlihoods in Rwanda. Trustees, the local representative and the local people achieved a great deal. Organisational achievements • Effective fundraising - this is mainly from regular donations. • Financial tracking has improved with effective systems for online monitoring of transfers to our Rwandan bank account and also withdrawals for particular items of agreed expenditure to support identified projects. • Organisational efficiency – VRUK hold regular trustee meetings as required and these have been virtual meetings during Covid lockdown. Improvements during this time include a focus on project management and accountability by using Agreements of Expectations to set the anticipated parameters of our investment in a number of projects. VRUK has continued to update the charity website and sends out regular newsletters. VRUK planning systems continue to be effective and we share these plans with GiFo and are responsive to their planning. The process is reciprocal. • Increasing local capacity - this is mainly by supporting income generation initiatives and holding the local NGO increasingly to account for initiating, implementing and reporting on these developments. The VRUK local representative works to strengthen these projects and he has an annual performance appraisal. • Monitoring - It has not been possible to visit Rwanda during this reporting period but electronic communication has increased in quality and volume and this is linked to a shared electronic overview of progress in the field. Developments in Rwanda • The Children’s Centre continues to function to deliver early education services to the children and a better learning environment has been made available for the children and teaching staff to work in and enjoy. Two new teachers have been recruited (to replace staff) and they work under the oversight of a trustee who is also a local Deputy Head teacher. Good quality educational resources are being used. • The Nursery education service was suspended according to government directive but the feeding programme continued with GiFo members providing packages of porridge ingredients for local families with children of nursery age during these periods. • The VRUK representative is working to support the income generation projects currently underway. These have been subject to written reports and the impact of the activities has been positive. • Covid-19 lockdown continues to affect the local economy and day to day life considerably.
