## **Trustees Report for the year ended 31 May 2021** 

The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31st May 2021. 

Reference and administrative information set out on page 3 forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements and the Statement of Recommended Practice - Accounting and Reporting by Charities (SORP 2015) 

## **Structure, governance & management** 

The organisation is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) - Foundation Registered 26th May 2015. The charity was established under the objects. 

All trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the charity. Any expenses reclaimed from the charity are set out in the financial summary. 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

1. To promote and protect the good health of people and the families effected by Lynch Syndrome for the public benefit through support, information and increased public awareness and such other means as the trustees deem fit. 

2. Nothing in this constitution shall authorise an application of the property of the CIO for the purposes which are not chari in accordance with Section 7 of the Charities and Trustees Investment (Scotland) Act and Section 2 of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008. Public benefit focus on ensuring that our activities achieve our charitable aims.

The trustees review the aims, objectives and activities of the charity each year. This report looks at what the charity has achieved and the outcomes of its work within the last twelve months. The trustees report the success of the key and the benefits the charity has brought to those groups of people that it is set up to help. The review also helps the trustees ensure the charity's aims, objectives and activities remain focused on its stated purposes. 

The trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity's Commission's general guidance on public benefit reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning its future activities. In particular, the trustees consider how activities will contribute to the aims and objectives that have been set. 

## **Beneficiaries of our services** 

Lynch Syndrome UK direct beneficiaries are any person who has Lynch Syndrome and their families and friends. 

## **Charitable activities in the past year** 

Lynch Syndrome UK is a registered charity stemming from a long running support group on Facebook. Our many members are passionate about our cause to educate and empower people living with this genetic condition and offering support to both themselves and their families when they need it most. 

Lynch Syndrome UK aims to ensure that for the public benefit, people and their families affected by Lynch Syndrome are provided with support in the form of information, signposting and listening, also to increase public awareness of the 

Our vision is that all people affected by Lynch Syndrome in the UK have access to standardised screening, thus enabling prevention of the development of cancer and early diagnosis enabling survival. 

Lynch Syndrome UK is an all-volunteer organisation and is founded and governed by Lynch Syndrome survivors and their families. The charity is dedicated towards protecting families and saving lives of those at high risk due to a hereditary predisposition to various cancers which often strike at an early age.

If diagnosed early, we believe Lynch Syndrome survivors have positive outcomes which enhance survival, the longevity an quality of life as well as the emotional wellbeing of those of us who are affected by Lynch Syndrome. 

The charity's aim is to be the leading source of information and support for individuals and families affected by Lynch Syndrome in the UK. 

In light of this context the charity has delivered the following activities to achieve its charitable objectives: 

## **Training and Events** 

• In March and April, as Lynch Syndrome UK could not hold their national conference in people due to lockdown restrictions, webinars were held for the support group which currently has over 2.3k members. Many people attended and heard information from healthcare professionals regarding the ground-breaking work being undertaken to identify and provide screening for people with Lynch Syndrome. Webinars were recorded for further viewing later so those unable to attend could access the information too. 

• Several the trustees in the past have attended Patient Information Days at Genetic centres to provide information regarding the charity and what we can do to support people with Lynch Syndrome and their families. This year all meetings were held virtually and directly to patients and have also taken part in student educational webinars directly with 

• The Charity website holds a great deal of patient information and leaflets can be ordered free of charge 

• The Charity has been working closely with St Mark’s hospital to produce a new Lynch Syndrome Passport. This document is a booklet that allows patients to record their healthcare and take along to clinician appointments and have access to it themselves. This booklet is provided to all patients and their families free of charge. 

## **Help and Advice** 

1. Our information service delivered through the website and social media offers free support and key information to people with Lynch Syndrome and their families. Medical professionals are also members of our social media groups. 

2. Our website remains an important source of information and support for the public, to either self-serve or be signposted third-party services and websites.

Our highest performing and most influential channel was the Facebook support group, which has reached a membership of over 2.3k people. This is a high and significant figure in terms of the number of individuals that have gained access to the c Numbers continue to increase at a steady rate each year. 

## **Partnership Working** 

Partnership and collaboration is key to Lynch Syndrome UK being able to deliver its aims. We simply could not provide the range and level of support without the help of our growing number of partner organisations that we work with.

The trustees confirm that in planning Lynch Syndrome UK's activities, they have given careful consideration to how Lynch Syndrome UK has fulfilled its charitable objectives. The Trustees do not identify any possible detriment or harm arising the activities of the charity. Page 3

## **The Trustees** 

The trustees meet four times a year but due to lockdowns, all meetings have been online with full attendance. With a small organisation and group of trustees, Lynch Syndrome UK does not work through formal sub-committees. Instead, the meet periodically to progress operational matters and prepare for forthcoming meetings. 

## **Volunteers** 

Their contributions have been invaluable and we thank them enormously. 

## **Financial Results** 

The charity had a surplus of £11,520 this year. This was raised by donations, fundraising and sales of merchandise. The total expenditure was £5,633 as there was no conference this year. The charity funds in the bank at the year end of £48,718. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

The charity aims to have enough funds in the bank to pursue the objects of the charity, such as raising awareness through conferences and literature. Given the last two years, the trustees do not feel that the amount of reserves held is excessive. 

## **Statement of Responsibility of the Trustees** 

Our trustees are responsible for preparing the report of the Trustees' and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and Charity Commission guidance and requirements. 

The trustees have prepared the financial statements which give true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charity for that period. 

In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to: 

- Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently 

- Observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP 

- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent 

- Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation 

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charity Commissio requirements. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps from the prevention and detection of fraud other irregularities.
