Trustee Report
At the beginning of 2024, we were very pleased to be able to make a grant to The Aegean Sea Sanctuary. The funds will be going towards the Crane that will be used to lift the cetacean slings. Orca Rescues Foundation had also contributed funds towards the slings in previous years.
The Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary is a pioneering initiative which is expected to serve multiple important functions on the eastern Aegean island of Leipsoi. From treatment for sick and injured sea creatures to advanced scientific and environmental research.
The Marine Sanctuary has a 2 mile long bay and is 20 metres deep, a far cry from the tiny captive facilities many Whales and Dolphins find themselves in. We all look forward to the day that Captive facilities are no longer. Figures from Marine Parks are diminishing rapidly as more and more people are not purchasing tickets, a slogan that has been widely used by many Anti Captivity groups. “ #Don’t Buy a Ticket “ Some facilities may even close within the next 12 months.
Aegean Marine Sanctuary
Facebook continues to have a great following. We want to retain this following so at the right time when a major change happens and cetaceans can be released, we can call on these supporters to help. The comments on most educational posts are positive and encouraging as the trends continue to change from seeing Orca in the Wild to joining Responsible Whale Watching trips and seeing Orca, aswell as other cetaceans swimming wild and free.
