**The Hepworth Silver Prize Band Registered Charity No. 1161654** **Trustees’ Annual Report and Accounts** **for the period** **1 February 2024 to 31 January 2025** **Objectives and activities** ## **Purposes of the Charity** The Charity’s objectives are to maintain the traditions of brass band music; to develop, promote and improve the art and culture of music in all genres to people of all ages; and to advance the education of children and young people to enable them to appreciate, learn, and participate in brass band music making. ## **Activities** The Band performs as a traditional British brass band. Its activities include concerts, both selfpromoted and for which the band is engaged; performance in competitions; video and CD recordings. It also takes part in significant local events such as Hepworth Feast and the Holme Valley Remembrance Day service. Some concert performances are fundraising events for other charities. ## The Charity and its trustees take care to conform with the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit requirements as set out in PB1 and PB2. ## **Volunteers** The trustees, management committee and the players undertake their respective roles without any financial compensation. ## **Achievements and performance** ## **Concerts and engagements** The band staged and promoted an annual series of concerts at venues in and around the Holme Valley including A New Year Celebration Concert, A Gala Concert with HD9 Youth Brass and soloist Katy Jones, Folk & Brass with singer-songwriter Katy Spencer, and the band’s popular Christmas concert. The concerts were well supported, and the series was very well received by the local community. The band also performed a fundraising concert at St David’s Church, Holmbridge in aid of the Church Organ Appeal and performed at the annual charity fundraising concert in Yeadon Town Hall for Aireborough Rotary Club. It took part in traditional Hepworth Feast celebrations, represented the village of New Herrington at Durham Miners’ Gala and took part in the Holme Valley Service of Remembrance. The band played carols for the Hepworth village Christmas service, and at the village Christmas Eve sing, as well as carolling in villages throughout the Holme Valley over the month of December. ## **Youth Brass Day and Gala Concert** The Gala Concert with HD9 Youth Brass was staged as a fitting finale to the band's inaugural “Youth Brass Day”—a free, fun afternoon where over 20 young brass and percussion players came along to work with mentors from the band and to take part in a masterclass with Katy Jones, one of the UK’s leading professional orchestral trombone players. ## **Contests** Hepworth competed at the Yorkshire Regional Championships, the Holme Valley Contest, the British Open Brass Band Championships at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, the Red Admiral Entertainment Contest and the Wychavon Festival of Brass Entertainment Contest as well as the summer season of march contests including the famous Whit Friday march contests. The band enjoyed notable contest success, winning both entertainment contests and taking prizes at a number of local march contests. ## **Financial Review** The charity’s income is derived from a combination of (i) collections, donations from corporate friends and public benefactors, (ii) fundraising events, (iii) grants and (iv) ticket and CD sales at concerts and other events. Care is taken that ticket prices are set at affordable levels. Unrestricted income is spent on day-to-day running of the band, music director’s fees, staging and promoting the band’s annual concert series, instrument repair and replacement, upkeep of uniforms and purchase of new music. Christmas collections around local villages form a large part of the fundraising activities, and at Christmas 2023 we raised in excess of £4,000 towards the ongoing running costs. Grants were received from Brass Bands England, Holme Valley Parish Council, Kirklees One Community Foundation towards the cost of staging the band’s annual concert series and inaugural Youth Brass Day. The charity does not have an official reserves policy.
