## **Objectives and activities**
## **Purposes of the Charity**
The Charity’s objectives are: To maintain the traditions of brass band music; to develop, promote and improve the art and culture of music in all genres to people of all ages; and to advance the education of children and young people to enable them to appreciate, learn, and participate in traditional brass band music making.
## **Activities**
The Band performs as a traditional British brass band. Its activities include concerts, both self promoted and for which the Band is engaged; performance in competitions; video and CD recordings. It also takes part in significant local events such as Hepworth Feast and the Holme Valley Remembrance Day service.
Some concert performances are fundraising events for other charities.
## **Public benefit**
The Charity and its trustees take care to conform with the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit requirements.
## **Volunteers**
The trustees, management committee and the players undertake their respective roles without any financial compensation.
## **Achievements and performance**
## **Concerts**
The Band promoted its annual New Year Viennese-style concert, held in a local church, to a moreor-less full house. Further planned concerts and other engagements were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
## **Online presence**
The Band then turned its attention to producing videos which could be published for free access online. We were able to commission professional production of some videos thanks to grants from the Garfield Weston Foundation and the Arts Council National Lottery Fund.
These comprised:
- A video of hymns normally sung at the Hepworth Feast United Sing.
- A recording of the miners’ hymn _Gresford_ to mark the weekend of Durham Miners’ Gala, when the Band normally represents the village of New Herrington.
- A collaboration with other well known bands from the four Yorkshire counties to play a new arrangement of _On Ilkley Moor Baht ’At_ to celebrate Yorkshire Day.
- A 30-minute online concert to replace our annual charity-raising performance for Aireborough Rotary Club, published on a pay-per-view basis.
- A recording of _Nimrod_ as a contribution to a video marking Remembrance Day, in place of the usual Holme Valley service held in New Mill.
- _Christmas on King Street,_ a video to raise funds for and awareness about the homeless in Huddersfield and West Yorkshire.
- Live videos of small groups carolling in and around local villages.

## **Contests**
The Band competed successfully at the Brass at the Wire contest, gaining second place, and were subsequently placed third at the Yorkshire Area of the National Championships, qualifying for a place at the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall. This contest was postponed and is expected to be held in October 2021.
## **Financial Review**
The charity’s income is derived from a combination of (i) collections, grants, donations from corporate friends and public benefactors, (ii) fundraising events, and (iii) ticket and CD sales at concerts and other events. Care is taken that ticket prices are set at affordable levels.
Unrestricted income is spent on day-to-day running of the Band, instrument repair and replacement, and uniforms.
Although most normal fundraising events did not take place during the year, the Band successfully applied for a number of grants, leaving the Band in a healthy financial situation.
Christmas collections around local villages form a large part of the fundraising activities, and in 2020 we successfully combined this with a Match It! Campaign by the One Community Foundation whereby it agreed to fund match moneys raised up to a £5,000 maximum.
The money raised by this appeal, along with grant awards from a number of bodies (so far totalling £10,845), has been set aside for much needed refurbishment and modernisation of the band room, formerly the offices of Dobroyd Mills, and of which the Band has the freehold. The site, excluding the band room, is scheduled for redevelopment, and this, along with the COVID-19 situation has caused some uncertainty about the best way forward for the refurbishment.
The Arts Council National Lottery Fund, the Garfield Weston Foundation and One Community also awarded grants which will enable more performances. The centrepiece of this programme is a collaboration with The Hepworth Wakefield to commission and perform a suite of music to celebrate Barbara Hepworth’s wider influences and interests. The Band will perform the music live in autumn 2021 in the Hepworth Wakefield’s gallery spaces and outdoor sculpture garden. The unspent portion of these grants (£15,500) has been set aside for this and future projects.

## **Governance**
The Charity is an Unincorporated Association governed by Constitution adopted on 2 February 2015 as amended on 12 May 2015 as amended on 16 November 2015. The trustees are elected by the Charity in Annual General Meeting.

## Notes to the accounts
(1) The charity owns the freehold to the band room. The premises were valued in 2015 at approximately £90,000. Funds collected in the One Community Foundation Match It! campaign and the grant from Holme Valley Parish Council (a balance of £10,846) have been set aside to fund band room refurbishment. The £5,000 Match It! Contribution and Gift Aid on the relevant donations were received during the band’s 2021 financial year.
(2) The band received a grant of £15,000 from the Arts Council National Lottery Fund (£1,500 to be paid on completion) to fund the commissioning and performance in conjunction with The Hepworth Wakefield of a new work to celebrate the life of Barbara Hepworth, a series of online concerts, and assistance in improving the band’s online presence.
The band received funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation (£3,000) and One Community (£1,000) to fund a further series of online concerts.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE HEPWORTH SILVER PRIZE BAND**
I report on the accounts for the year ended 31[st] January 2021.
## **Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and Examiner**
The trustees of The Hepworth Silver Prize Band are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that audits are not required for their respective accounts for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and have elected for their accounts to be independently examined.
It is my responsibility to:
- a) Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; and
- b) To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners
- c) To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of Independent Examiner's Statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by The Hepworth Silver Prize Band and a comparison of the accounts presented to those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in a full audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent Examiner's Statement**
In connection with my examination, no matters have come to my attention:
1. which give me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- a) to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act
- b) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
