Erdington Foodbank Annual Report 2021-2022
Another busy year for us:-
-
Demand has been consistently high and, indeed, heightened and intensified, especially by continual tightening of universal credit rules and the economic crisis.
-
We learnt from lockdown and are continually reviewing the way we operate. We restarted the voucher system, and this helped with ensuring we gave food to people that really needed help. People are now able to come into the distribution centres again and we continue to build connections with people.
-
A foodbank prayer meeting was set up that happens every week.
-
The thinking and work on opening some food pantries in the Erdington area began and gained momentum during the year with a lot of willing volunteers. The goal is to have one food pantry open by the end of 2022. They will initially be overseen by the trustees of Erdington Foodbank.
-
Members passed a resolution to change our Constitution from an Association CIO to a Foundation CIO whose trustees are its membership. This was passed at the AGM and is soon to be filed with the Charity Commission
-
Our partnerships with Birmingham Settlement and Centrala have been really helpful to our users. They have offered benefits advice, issued vouchers and carried out case work with users.
-
Our brilliant volunteers continue to work tirelessly and selflessly especially during periods of illness of key volunteers (a big thank you to Isabel especially for stepping up to cover during Jean’s illness – you were fantastic!). Our volunteers’ resilience and dedication came through as everything continued seamlessly well.
-
Jean is fully recovered – praise be to God and is back to working hard and making sure everything is going smoothly.
-
Dorothy sadly had to leave us due to needing to relocate and it would have been difficult for her to travel the long distance to work. During her time with us, she was able to set up our Facebook page, produce our very first newsletter, began work on a volunteering policy and brought to fruition a number of great projects. Thank you for all your hard work Dorothy and all the best for the future.
-
A difficult year too where we lost some very key champions of the work of Foodbank. Ellen Jenkins who was one of our first Foodbank Trustees, Penny Holbrook who was the Councillor of Stockland Green and our MP Jack Dromey were both great advocates and helpers of Erdington Foodbank.
-
We continue to strengthen our governance by setting up policies around volunteering, safeguarding and fund raising
-
Food donations have reduced significantly due to the economic crisis and we now rely in the main part on buying food in. Thankfully we have continued to receive help from some regular individual donors, businesses, faith groups, schools and various voluntary groups.
-
In spite of occasional communications that we will have to move out, we remain at the current warehouse at Central Square. We have also invested in a Shipping Container and utilise this as additional food storage area. The container is based at Connected Life Church.
The challenging times continue with the energy crisis this winter being the main worry for many. We hope that we will be able to continue supporting struggling individuals and families this winter so they do not have to go hungry. So, thank you everybody for all you have been doing and continue to do. What we are working on together surely is making a massive difference in the lives of some of the most disadvantaged people in our community.
Thank you!
Some facts and figures.
Total amounts of food given out in financial year 2021-2022 We provided food on a total 15,655 occasions. for 11,212 adults + 4443 for children
Last year’s total was: 22,066 = 14,419 adults + 7,647 children!
Of those we provided food for the vast majority are from the wards of Stockland Green and Gravelly Hill, followed by Erdington Ward. We continue to very much provide a local service for the Erdington community.
Main referral agencies
We have moved back to a more consistent voucher/referral based system.
The main reasons given for needing help were as follows:-
Remains benefit delays and benefit changes, low income and debt. The issues hidden behind these is the impact on individuals (and families) of the harshness of the Universal Credit system, having benefits stopped and simply finding that either benefits or wages are not enough to live on.
Thanks again for all of your support!
Gerard Goshawk Chair of Trustees
