**InteraKt is a local charity based in Newbury, West Berkshire. We support young people and adults with learning, physical and sensory challenges by providing a whole host of creative opportunities in dance, drama, arts & crafts, and life skills.**

Our participants thrive in the safe, friendly and professional environment we provide, with regular access to creative classes enabling them to develop skills and maintain a strong sense of identity and purpose. As well as running daily classes and clubs and where ever possible we work alongside professional actors and fi lmmakers to produce spectacular shows with our participants at the heart of every performance thus enriching the lives of everyone involved.

We LOVE BEING CREATIVE and shout about the power of creativity from the rooftops (loudly) whenever we can. Creativity isn’t just a performance or a piece of music, it’s a way of life and at InteraKt we create new possibilities every day. This approach enables us to deliver a bespoke service so that everyone engages fully on their level of ability.

## Achievements

Our new in house accountant is tic **king** all the boxes, not only are our acc **ounts looked** after so perfectly but, we realised that we needed someone who **was**

their homes and our team. This process not only helps our accountant understand the day to day routines but it is also helpful with the invoicing process and monitoring the complexities of the disability community. Our new website has achieved the desired outcome with more interest resulting in raising our profi le in our local community, and there have been more enquiries which furthered our growth while promoting a more supportive and positive atmosphere amongst our stakeholders. The most imminent of strategic developemnt is the establishing a Theatre Group called ReaKt. This group has grown from our evening drama club and we are now at the point of branding and collaborating with a few local theatres in order to raise awareness of performing arts within the disability community and establishing those partnerships with the disability community at the heart of what we do.

The second most recent objective is to recruit more volunteers, this is an area which most charities f i nd challenging. We ha ve researched extensively best practice and understanding the various approaches as

well as consulting our existing volunteers for their input and guidance in making certain our approach and documentation was in line from those valued volunteers and from the research **undertake** n. Our aim is to have our updated **marketing** in ready for West Berkshire Volunteer **Bureau’s an** nual volunteer fair in January 2024 **and to reach** out through a variety of social **media platform** s not excluding face to face **events for meet** ing potential volunteers and **for increasing o** ur volunteer data base.

There are numerous projects & opportunities for Interakt

**to co** nsider and to carefully **and sens** itively implement with **the support of t** he whole team and **stake holders. Watch** this space for further **updates as we continue t** o focus building up **a centre of excellence in t** he performing and **the creative, visual and pe** rforming arts for our **community of individ** uals with learning, sensory **and physical c** hallenges and disabilities.

We have been part of the Watermill Theatre’s 4th Wall Project for the last 5 years and in the last two years Interakt has supported by hosting and playing a big part in their performance based on the play at the time called Othello.

The 4th Wall is all about introducing live theatre to the disability community by taking part in a series of workshops run by the Watermill based on the play being performed at that time.

The project not only enables us to work with a Watermill professional but also allows us to meet the actors,

perform at the Watermill to family, friends and often times the professional cast join the audience and take part in the talk back at the end of the show.

This year we performed “Othello”, we learned such a lot about the character and the challenges the actors had to overcome in order to perform this powerful play.

We absolutely loved playing Othello and being part of the 4th Wall Project at the Watermill Theatre.

Following a series of workshops delivered by a wonderful Director Rachel Taylor, the Dramatised Story Telling Actors performed on September 2023 a piece at Arlington Arts Theatre near Mary Hare School called “Mambo No. 5”.

They told a very entertaining story about a group of adults with learning disabilities who had a dream of winning a singing competition which took place overseas. This performance incorporated physical theatre, scripted, dance and of course singing and… yes they won the competition!!!

Mambo No. 5 is the very first collaborative partnership project with Arlington Arts and one of many more to come. These inclusive projects are varied and have the potential of involving students

at Mary Hare School, the wider learning disability community and the professional and mainstream community who have aspirations for multi inclusive performances.

Monday eve ReaKt Theatre worked with a local script writer, professional actors and musician to perform an adaptation of Twelfth Night called Twelfth Night (Not Quite) at Arlington Arts near Newbury as part of our focus for creating partnership projects with local theatres.

The play incorporated traditional Shakespearean characters as well as developed characters for the purpose of creating an all-inclusive performance.

The feedback for this play from the audience and Arlignton Arts staff have been wonderful, all the performers expressed their appreciation for the opportunity of working within such a varied mixed ability group of actors.

Everyone involved is looking forward to another project of working together. The project in its entirety has turned out to be one of the most enriching and successful piece of work which we will treasure for a very long time.

**S** TESTIMONIAL

To Whom it may concern,

My daughter who is now aged 29 has attended the day service Interakt provide for over 5 years. She really enjoys going each day and takes part in nearly all the activities Interakt off er.

I asked her what she enjoyed most about it and she told me it ‘got her out of the house’ and ‘to meet my friends’ I truly feel if Interakt wasn’t there she would stagnate at her house, her mental health would deteriorate and she would end up doing nothing. She interacts with everyone at Interakt and is always telling us what happens every day and is excited for the following day.

The Interakt staff are a very caring, imaginative team and defi nitely improve my daughter’s lifestyle.

Interakt off er such a varied programme, at no point does my daughter get bored of anything. As parents when we see the various plays, fashion shows and art projects that Interakt put on we are truly amazed at the scope, imagination and care of all the staff . All the staff members go ‘above and beyond’ in their support for the participants.

The sessions enable my daughter to lead a fuller life and session.encourage her to be more independent learning life skills at each

**Anna Gent**

Hi Tsippy, On behalf of the service users I have worked with as a social worker in West Berkshire, I would like to commend the unique work provide by Interakt.

The use of the performing arts has a transforming eff ect on the lives of those who access the services in terms of promoting creativity, confi dence building, problem solving, relationship building and giving individuals an invaluable sense of pride, satisfaction and success.

Many of the service users are undervalued and overlooked in today’s society but their lives and the lives of their friends and family are enriched by the opportunities provided by Interakt.

The public performances to date are well attended and of a high standard and a credit to all involved and a great way of enabling the wider community see what can be achieved with the right support and encouragement.

Very best wishes

Dear Tsippy,

‘We are a small independent care home and as such, we have to battle for funding to enable our residents to experience a life that is full of all of the opportunities and aspirations that they tell us they want to achieve.

Like with any provision, this comes at a cost but it is what makes us get up every morning and carry on striving to be better and diff erent than all the other care homes in the region.

We mention this because this is exactly what Interakt have aspired and - most importantly - have achieved. Their community projects have provided meaningful activities and engagements for people with learning disabilities.

When the world shut down to Covid, Interakt were one of the fi rst to start back up again - testament to the hard work and passion that all of the team at Newbury have. We have one individual who will regularly refuse to engage and refuse her medication, the only way to ever encourage her to re-engage is to remind her that she has InteraKt on Fridays.

This shows that Tsippy and her team have such a high and valuable understanding of individual’s needs and as such Interakt is so well received by our individuals. There has never been one occasion where Tsippy and her team have been unable to deal with any of the challenges that our resident presents at times. We regard InteraKt as one of the only clubs that empowers our individuals and whom encourage individuality.

Without the endorsements of the Good Exchange and other similar stakeholders, Interakt would be unable to continue as they do today - that is a continuation of forward thinking and person centred sessions for people with learning disabilities who truly make a diff erence to the lives of the people who attend their workshops and sessions and whom provide individuals with a voice and upskilling in theatre and dramatics’.

Hope that helps,

Kind regards,
