Interakt Charity December 2021 to December 2022

InteraKt is a local charity based in Newbury, West Berkshire. We support young people and adults with learning, physical and sensory challenges by providing a whole host of creative opportunities in dance, drama, arts & crafts, and life skills.

Our participants thrive in the safe, friendly and professional environment we provide, with regular access to creative classes enabling them to develop skills and maintain a strong sense of identity and purpose.

As well as running daily classes and clubs and where ever possible we work alongside professional actors and filmmakers to produce spectacular shows with our participants at the heart of every performance thus enriching the lives of everyone involved.

We LOVE BEING CREATIVE and shout about the power of creativity from the rooftops (loudly) whenever we can. Creativity isn’t just a performance or a piece of music, it’s a way of life and at InteraKt and we create new possibilities every day. This approach enables us to deliver a bespoke service so that everyone engages fully on their level of ability.

We love what we do and our team would love to welcome you to join in the fun. Contact us today to find out more.

ACHIEVEMENTS

It has been a challenging couple of years with the uncertainties for our participants. We have continued throughout offering our services via zoom in lockdowns and slowly transitioning into face to face as much as possible while adhering to Health advisory services. We are now fully operational offering a full range of services to enrich and empower our participants.

We have brought all of our accounting services in house and have developed opportunities for a couple of part time staff to support us with developing our service.

The new website has gone live and now offers a friendly and easily accessible format for all participants and staff to share in what life is like with us at InteraKt.

PERFORMANCE

We have many new opportunities with external theatre companies and groups. This is a strong theme for our CEO who is actively working to develop this on-going theme to enrich others in the community.

Having our own premises has enabled our staff to develop themes in a way that were not possible before. We are still enjoying the benefits of having our own premises as we don’t have to share with other organisations, i.e. once our participants leave at 3pm the staff have two hours to research and set up the space for the following day. This benefit has enriched all of our lives and given us far more freedom to work the hours which suit and support the work we do more efficiently.

Interakt continues exploring and developing works in Drama, Music and Movement, Art, Film Making, IT and Life Skills. Our community is all about wellness and empowering each participant to engage, grow in confidence and to live their lives to the fullest.

The Watermill Theatre Partnership Project took place in October 2022 which was a great success. Our participants were directed by one of their Artistic Directors who supported the group to engage and perform their version of the play “Othello,” this was performed at the Watermill Theatre to families and friends.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Supporting others is part of our culture at InteraKt

Caring for others isn’t just something we see as essential, it’s part of what makes us human. We can only really flourish when we nourish the lives of others, connection and relationships are fundamental to our ongoing development and internal happiness.

Below are some of the ways the team at InteraKt offers their support:

Looking after wildlife

We are crazy about wildlife at InteraKt and love watching the birds in the surrounding woodland. We decided to make fat balls for our feathered friends, and then spent an afternoon strategically planning which trees to hang them from. This was a huge success (not just for us but for the greedy birds too!) and is something we plan to repeat every winter.

Protecting our planet

Does the planet need more plastic? Not according to us it doesn’t! We are always looking at ways to use less plastic and we recycle wherever we can. For us it’s just another opportunity to be creative – making bird feeders out of bottles is one of our favourite inventions so far!

We have also taken part in Green Peace projects, providing the government with essential research information to challenge the efficacy of laws about one-off plastic usage.

Grow, grow, grow!

We had so much fun growing sunflowers from tiny seeds this year. Our aim was to learn about the process of planting and growing, understand how we could benefit the wildlife in the process and recognise that plants depended on us for survival. Our tallest sunflower was over 2 metres tall!

Community support

We also volunteer our gardening skills at a local care home for the elderly. The residents enjoy coming out and chatting with us, and we love working alongside them to make their garden a beautiful place to enjoy.

Independent life skills have become a reality with our fully fitted kitchen and space to enable participants to cook – we include photos of the healthy eating and fun pizzas that were made during this last year.

Interakt makes use of the football pitches with sport and outdoor games, walks and fresh air.

Looking further to our outside space has been great fun and adds another dynamic to personal skills and empathy with the outside space and the world of recycling and nature. New staff are enabling more participants to join us each week to join in the development of the ever growing projects. Among other things an active participation with the world outside and around us while engaging in feeding the birds, looking how to reuse and be mindful of our environment.

Development for new dance classes, evening social group activities are now planned and being delivered.

Our main aim is to provide one on one support to engage the needs of the participant so that we can facilitate a safe environment to socialise, change and develop awareness of themselves and others in the world wide community.

“TESTIMONIALS”

“We regard InteraKt as one of the only clubs that empowers our individuals and who encourage individuality….forward thinking and person centred sessions for people with learning disabilities truly make a difference in the lives of the people who attend their workshops.”
