Structure, governance and management

The Charity’s governing document is its constitution adopted 5 May 2015, and it is constituted as a charitable incorporated organisation. New trustees may be appointed to serve for a term of two years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees. Each of the trustees shall retire at the end of their term of appointment but shall be eligible for re-appointment.

The trustees review the skills and competencies required for the board of trustees, and where a requirement is identified they initiate a recruitment process. New trustees receive training from the existing trustees. There is no formal training programme.

The charity holds its bank account with Barclays Bank Plc, and has a donation facility with CAF Donate.

Regular trustee meetings are held, and the trustees met eleven times during the year.

Objectives and activities

To promote for the benefit of the public the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the Cuckmere Haven west beach and cliffs.

When planning and carrying out their activities, the charity trustees have complied with the duty in section 4 of the 2011 Charities Act, to have due regard to Public Benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission.

Further research and design work has been conducted on a scheme to protect the Cuckmere Haven west beach and cliffs, and discussions continued with the relevant authorities, culminating with planning application being granted for the proposed project, but this was subsequently quashed on judicial review. The trustees are now in discussion with the relevant parties with a view to submitting a fresh planning application.

The regulations to control the covid 19 pandemic, coupled with the loss of the planning permission, meant that it was not appropriate for the charity to undertake any fundraising events this year, and consequently the trustees released the £5,000 designated for holding a Lapwing festival back to unrestricted reserves. The charity’s website continued to attract donations from the public.

Achievements and performance

The website has been maintained which has details of the history of the Cuckmere Haven area, the erosion problems, and an outline of the proposals for the protection of the west beach and cliffs. It includes a donation facility through CAF Donate. Donations during the year were £18,617, which included a marvellous donation £10,676 from a festival put on by enthusiastic local supporters called “Celebrate Cuckmere Haven”. In addition the charity received gift aid tax recovered of £1,011 and other income of £6.

The charity spent £13,134 on professional advice connected with the plans for the protection scheme for the Cuckmere Haven west beach and cliffs, and £7,498 on fundraising and publicity. Once the planning permission was quashed we paused the professional fundraiser’s engagement while the way forward is developed. In accordance with section 189 of the Charities Act 2011 the charity purchased trustee indemnity insurance £577.

No trustee received any remuneration.

Financial review

It is the reserves policy of the charity that funds will be built up to finance the protection scheme for the Cuckmere Haven west beach and cliffs. This is a large project and it is anticipated it will take time to achieve the necessary funding. At 31 December 2021 the charity held £53,021 in reserve for this purpose.

Declaration

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
