Achievements an(1 perfomiance
This last year has been one of steady prtyres5 for our Iw) development PTcfjects-the Michael's Hostel
and the new e￿ homes, and slable peri¢JJ for (Mjr Education Fund our existing six homes and
their tenants.
Thompson and Plews Cottages
I six home have been fully let thro￿￿hOUl the year. wth only one chaNJe (rf tenancy. The vacancy
was advertised locally, 8n(i had cons•Jerable interest and a difficult decision to make over which
applicant lo accept. The tenant that we eventualty chose is very happy wlh her new home. Plews
Cottages were ftjlty doccwaled exlemaly, and their appearance Vfds much improved. and the treatment
also improve(I their Insulati¢￿.
Education Fund
We have made three grants from lh8 Education Fun(J during the year to peop18 in the village
who are in higher or further educalion.
New homes
We held a public meeting and Cons￿la￿'0n event atx)ut our prow)sal to build Ihree highly energy
efficient, flexible and adaptable homes on land that Ihe Charity on a field lo the rear of Plew5
Cottagos. We received a good lovd of support from the village and (￿Iderable interesl from people
wanting lo live in thern.
We received grant aid frcffi RlehmC￿Sbir& Council. prioT trj ts aix4ition. towards the cost of
construclion of Ihese new homes and are currenuy negotiating the 18mis of a mortgage from Ihe
Charity Bank that wlll give u5 Ihe r8st of the funds we require. The houses wll be largely built off slt8 by
Norscol Homes. W9 have secured F4anniNJ pemission for the homes F4an to bu1￿ thom in 2024.
Hudswell Hostel @ Al Mthael's.
Planning p8miission lo convert Sl Mich881's Church Into a hostel for walkers and cyclists was secured
in June 2022. Followng this we commissK)ned a Quanlity Surveyor lo esbmate the conversation costs
and wrote a business plan which demonstrated the hostel would be a viable busin&ss. The cost of
purchasing the building. ¢￿StrUc11￿j a road, solar panels and converting the building is likely lo t
ground £1 Mill￿n. DuTing Ihe lasl year we have submilled 12 aPF4icalions lo chaiitable trusts a￿1
national and local govemm8nl ￿les. Six of these have been approved. 18avirwJ a shortfall of around
£400,000, which we hope lo reise from lurther aFvlutsons and a loan from th8 Charity Bank. We are
currendy gathering quotes lor the V•rsrk and finalising some more deS￿n details to be agreedwilh the
YDNPA plannlng officers.
As part of (wr campaign to raise the capilal furnls lo pay lor the Convers￿ work we invrted Rishi
Sunak MP to meet us at thè church lo 8xt4ain our proposals. He visited us one week before her
bocame Prime Minister and was very impressed th our plans. He has subsequently supp)rted our
bids lo govemmenl funds - the Communty Ownership Fund and the Shared Prosperity Fund. Our
bic* lo the Shared Prospèrity Fund for £41xJ.o￿ has been approved and we are waits'ng lo hear the
outcome of our applicaticm lo the Communty ¢￿ershIP Fund. We remain optimistic that we will be
able lo raise the financo for th8 project and eX￿t th lo being earfy in 2024.
Two othor initiatives have sprung from the St Michael's project. The first is the Origins of Hudswell
Project, which led to a ccmmmunty archaeol(KJical dig taking place in the summer place on the land in
front of Al Michael's. This Vfds led by professIc￿al archaeologists and Hudswell residents Calh and
stuart Ross, supported by over 40 adults an(J children from the village who took part in the du.
eventually uncovering evidence of an old lead mine. This pr(4ect was supported by grants from the
Heritage Lottery Fund and the yorkshi￿ knhaeoloJical and Historical Society.

Secondly we have linked up wth an oiganisation ￿ann1Thj a Camino pdgrimage route from Finchale
Priory in County Durham to Santiap in Northem Spain. The roule from Durham to Rity)n Cathedral VAII
pas5 through Rithmond, Hud5V￿lI and Downholme. The hosld will provide accommodation for
pilgrims on this route. In order to draw attèntion to this the Chairty worked ￿th the Friends of the
Finchal8 Camino and St Marys Church in Richmond to organise a plgrimagè walk from Richmond lo
Downholme, stopping at at Sl Michael's in Hudswell whith look ￿ace on the feast of St Michael the
30th SeptembÈr. This WAS BttÈnded by thè Bishop of Rion and supported by about 45 pilgrims.
Finaly. the hostel project has generated some televi￿(￿ and print media coverage, we hope wll
help with our lun¢>raising campaign.
