TRUSTEES' REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2025

The trustees’ present their report and accounts for the year ending 31st March 2025.

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the charity’s Constitution and Financial Policies, applicable law and the requirements of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008.

Objects of the charity

The charity was registered on 30[th] April 2015, (No. 1161505) and is affiliated to the UK Men’s Shed Association. The registered office and principal address is Moseley and Kings Heath Park, Vicarage Road, Kings Heath, Birmingham, B14 7QT.

The charity's aims are:

• The advancement of education through the development of individual capabilities, skills and understanding through informal education and learning opportunities.

Moseley & Kings Heath Shed will meet these aims by providing a space that is warm, welcoming and friendly where (mainly older) people can gather to chat,

Page | 4

MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH SHED

have a hot drink and perhaps a light snack, share experience, skills and stories so that they can learn from each other, solve problems and gain perspective on their lives. They will also be able to take part in the activities that the 'Shed' has to offer, facilitating the acquisition of skills and benefiting participants through informal education.

Moseley & Kings Heath Shed recognises the need to secure relevant financial and human resources if it is to meet its core aims.

The Charity is governed by its Constitution, which set out the role and method of election of members of the Management Committee. The Management Committee meets at least quarterly and is responsible for the governance of the Charity, the actions of any paid employees and for all policy, organisation and financial matters.

The ’Shed’

For brevity, during this report the Moseley & Kings Heath Shed will also be referred to as the ‘Shed’.

Also, for clarity in this report we will call the workshop known officially as the ‘Potter Shed’ as the woodworking shed, and the ‘Branch Shed’ as the craft shed. Both Sheds were named after two members of the Shed, but we feel that it is better to use these alternative names so that their use is clear for any third parties reading this report.

Trustee Board

The trustees, who served during the year, 1[st] April 2024 to 31[st] March 2025, are listed below.

We have put in brackets the Annual General Meeting (AGM) date that each trustee was approved for their current term of office as trustee. The Constitution states that at every AGM, any trustees who have served more than 2 years and

Page | 5

11 months, must stand down. They may seek re-election at that annual general meeting.

We would like to thank both Saeed Ghinai and Sandra McInally for their work as Trustees.

During Saeed’s time as trustee he raised considerable amounts of funds for the ‘Shed’ and took a lead role in numerous projects. He was Chair from November 2023 to April 2025.

Sandra was a trustee for 8 years, during which she took on the positions of Membership Secretary and Vice-Chair. During the national Covid lockdown she sat on the Administration committee when so many of our current policies were renewed or created.

There are no trustees that need to stand down at this AGM.

The following trustees were co-opted during the year and will need their co-option approved by the members.

None of the trustees has any beneficial interest in the charity or received any

payments, other than for approved reimbursement of expenses. All trustees have either made financial contributions or contributed in kind, in addition to giving their time to the project.

Workshop Facilities

The ‘Shed’ maintains two buildings which are both located behind Kings Heath House on the Kings Heath Park site. The two buildings are: the craft shed and the woodworking shed.

The craft shed is used for the craft activities of stained-glass construction and tile mosaics.

The woodworking shed is used for woodworking only and also contains the kitchen and toilet facilities.

The ‘Shed’ is continually maintaining and improving these two buildings for its members use. During the period 1[st] April 2024 to 31[st] March 2025, the following improvements were made:

Art classes

he group has grown and through Rob Treadwell's efforts and leadership, is now well established in their new home at Holders Lane Allotments. The group started

life as part of our response to COVID emergency via Outreach at the Friends Meeting House. The amount of negotiation and behind the scenes partnership work mustn't be underestimated. We are privileged to have access to such a good space at such little cost.

Glass and Mosaics

The craft shed has continued to develop the glass and mosaics sessions on offer. Tuesday mornings are dedicated to leaded glass work with Dillon Close leading. The waiting list for these sessions has been steadily worked at, and a number of people have been through the course with excellent results.

Tuesday afternoons were started with the aim of new beginners to learn the basics of Tiffany Copper Tape Glass work. In keeping with our theme of consolidation, this was under the leadership of our "home grown" new supervisors, Nicky Abbott, Sue Wilmer and Marguerite Lawrence. The aim was to teach new members the basics and then move them to our other glass sessions on Thursday and Saturday.

Thursday morning advanced sessions started with Dillon and Maxine Ross and Intermediates in the afternoon with Mike Hewitt, Jill Parry and Maxine Ross. These sessions have been very successful and rely on bookings made in advance via the good offices of Denise Griffin.

With regards Mosaics, Steve Jay and Jo Potter have steadily continued to make the Wednesday morning Mosaics sessions a big success. It is pleasing to see members working away at the designs and coming away with great results.

Working with external partners

Over the years, the Shed has run numerous projects to help local residents and charity organizations. These have previously ranged from constructing hedgehog boxes for the Friends of Brandwood Cemetery to building a wooden pergola for a local Primary School.

In the financial year 2024 to 2025, the Shed constructed and supplied wooden signage posts for Thrive Horticultural Training Centre in Kings Heath park. Thrive offers social and therapeutic horticulture programs using gardening to improve physical and mental health, communication skills and overall well-being for people with disabilities, ill health, isolation or other need.

The ’Shed’ continues to work closely with another charity South Birmingham Tools for Africa (SBTfA), who are based immediately adjacent to the woodworking shed. SBTfA collects and refurbishes tools to help African craftsmen and women lead more sustainable and viable lives in Africa.

Every Tuesday, SBTfA use the facilities in the woodworking shed to refurbish tools that will be sent to Africa. Also, the ‘Shed’ will direct any offers of tool donations to SBTfA if they are not required by the ‘Shed’.

Expansion in the ‘Park Rangers workshop’

Although the ‘Shed’ operates from two buildings space is still a premium and is held back by the lack of space to expand it activities. In the past, the trustees have been approached by members and group who want to use the ‘Shed’ for pottery classes, stone mason sessions and blacksmith classes. These have been politely refused since the ‘Shed’ doesn’t have the physical room to accommodate these activities. So, the trustees are always looking for opportunities to expand it’s physical space.

There is an opportunity to expand into an area immediately next to the woodworking shed that it called ‘The Park Rangers workshop’. It is area is approximately 4 metres by 4 metres in area and until recently was primarily used as a workshop both for Birmingham City Council park rangers and South Birmingham Tools for Africa (SBTfA). The park rangers have now vacated this area and with the support of SBTfA, we are seeking to expand into this area.

Expansion into the Park Rangers Workshop will allow us to move the wood turning lathe and belt saw into this area. Both machines create a lot of dust and noise and use of them is therefore limited to times when the Shed is quiet. Having them both located away from the core of the woodworking shed will allow them to be used more often.

Negotiations with the Council have been slow and have not yet reached a conclusion. The Trustees are hopeful that an agreement can be reached.

Success bids have been made on the following projects:

Workshop committee

The workshop committee was revitalized with Rob Treadwell taking on the coordinated role. This started meeting on Monday mornings with a clear desire to remove much of the accumulated materials and a redesign of the layout. Considerable space under the benches was cleared with the surplus aluminum being cashed in for scrap. A new lockable cupboard for tools was purchased to house our good quality hand tools.

We welcomed Barry Poxon as an additional supervisor for woodwork and members have benefitted from his excellent carpentry skills. Pete Currell has continued to support the woodwork sessions and we must thank Pete for his determined efforts to keep afloat our wood work sessions over the years.

Volunteers

The Moseley and Kings Heath Shed relies totally on volunteers. Every Monday there is a Shed Cleaning and Improvement day where members volunteer to help clear and maintain the craft shed and the woodworking shed.

Every session that the ‘Shed’ runs has a volunteer supervisor who has received safety training in using any machinery in their session. All supervisors have basic Emergency First Aid training.

The Trustees meet monthly and an Administration sub-committee oversees that all policies and procedures are kept up-to-date.

Training

No training took place during the period 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025.

Page | 10

MOSELEY & KINGS HEATH SHED

However 12 members who also act as supervisors have received Emergency First Aid training in April and August 2025. Further Emergency First Aid training sessions are planned in 2026 for other supervisors.

Membership

Membership is renewed at every AGM, which in turn occurs every November.

For the purposes of the Shed’s Annual Reports, the membership figures in the end-of-year reports are the numbers at the AGM. The highest membership numbers during a year are at the AGM. Immediately after the AGM, the membership sees a sudden drop, since some members do not renew or renew later in the year.

The current membership as of 1[st] November 2025 is as follows:

FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES

Notes to the Financial Statements for the year ended 31st March 2025

Review of financial position

The ‘Shed’ shows a healthy financial position with £17,556.88 free to be spent of projects. The Trustees will continue to monitor how this is spent to ensure best value for money at all times.

Our immediate focus will be to identify where tools are missing or need replacing in the woodwork shed, and to ensure that supervisors receive all their necessary training.

STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITIES

The trustees are responsible for preparing the accounts in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice. Charity law requires the trustees to prepare accounts for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its incoming resources and application of resources, including its net income and expenditure for the year.

In preparing these accounts, the trustees are required to: - select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; - make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and - prepare the accounts on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
