Set out below is a summary of the key events and initiatives organised by the Clinical Legal Education Organisation between 6 April 2022 and 5 April 2023.
Trustee changes:
Linden Thomas stood down as co-Chair of CLEO during 2022-23, although remains as trustee. The Trustees extend their thanks and appreciation to Linden for all she has done as co-Chair of CLEO.
Lucy Blackburn was elected co-Chair of CLEO alongside Andrea Todd who remained in her co-Chair post as at April 2023.
As at April 2023, Lyndsey Bengtsson was Treasurer of CLEO.
Membership:
Membership of CLEO remains healthy and continues to increase steadily with membership at 306 individuals as at April 2023 from across around 80 academic institutions.
Events:
CLEO organised several events between April 2022 and April 2023.

CLEO Policy Network Event : 27 May 2022 - online event – 25 participants

The North-West Clinics meet - up: 10 June 2022 – in -person event at Liverpool Law Clinic attended by 12 clinicians from the North West

Academic Promotions for Clinicians : 5 July 2022 – online event – 33 participants

Design Thinking in Legal Education (Emily Allbon and Amanda Perry Kessaris) : 2 December 2022 – online event – 55 members registered

Online Student Conference: December 2022 – online event. CLEO trustees Francine Ryan and Louise Hewitt, in conjunction with Northumbria University, hosted an online student conference linked to the GAJE-IJCLE-SAULCA Worldwide Conference in Stellenbosch. Prof. Stephen Levett delivered a session focussing on climate justice which was attended by 60 students.
Policy Network Workshops:
The Policy Network organised a series of workshops which were held within the Policy Network team on the CLEO Teams site (with recordings available for members of the team). The Policy Network has 52 members.

Research Network Workshops:
In March 2023 the CLEO Events team set up the CLEO Research Team, an online space to enable clinical legal educators to connect with one another, share ideas, offer peer review, organise meetings and generally provide a supportive space for research. The following events were held via Teams for this group between 1 March 2023 and 5 April 2023:

We also continue to advertise events that are likely to be of interest to our members, such as LawWorks events, Streetlaw Best Practice events and so on.
Conference:
The CLEO conference was hosted at UCLAN in September 2022. It was attended by 55 delegates and covered topics such as clinics and Legal Aid; Social Welfare Law and innovations with CLE.
Qualifying Work Experience (QWE):
- Following on from its 2021-22 guidance to assist pro bono supervisors in deciding whether the work undertaken in their university clinics/pro bono centres can be counted as Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) for the purposes of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam ( https://www.cleo-uk.org/qualifying-work-experience/), during 2022-23 CLEO produced a further guide to QWE, this time for students. The AGM for this reporting period took place on 6 September 2022 in person.
