## **Clinical Legal Education Organisation Trustees Annual Report: April 2021 - April 2022** **Charity Name:** Clinical Legal Education Organisation **Charity Address:** 70 Blenheim Road, Moseley, Birmingham B13 9TZ **Charity Registration Number:** 1161457 Set out below is a summary of the key events and initiatives organised by the Clinical Legal Education Organisation between 6 April 2021 and 5 April 2022. ## **Trustee changes:** The following trustees stood down in 2021-22: - Stephanie Jones of UCLAN; - Ashley Fredericks of Nottingham Trent University; - - Victoria Roper of Northumbria University (also stood down as Treasurer). The trustees note their thanks to Stephanie, Ashley and Victoria. The following trustee was appointed: - Lyndsey Bengtsson of Northumbria University (also appointed as Treasurer). Lucy Yeatman stood down as co-Chair of CLEO during 2021-22, although remains as trustee. Andrea Todd was elected co-Chair of CLEO alongside Linden Thomas who remained in her co-Chair post as at April 2022. As at April 2022, Lyndsey Bengtsson was Treasurer of CLEO. ## **Membership:** Membership of CLEO remains healthy and continues to increase steadily with membership approaching 300 individuals from across around 80 academic institutions. ## **Events:** CLEO organised several events between April 2021 and April 2022, many of which were in partnership with other organisations. - **Collaboration in clinics** ; Lancaster University, the Open University, City University and Lancaster University - 7 May 2021: 40 participants. - **Policy Clinics** – 13 May 2021 - collaborating with Northumbria University: 62 sign ups. - **Lockdown Law Clinics: An interactive workshop to reflect on what has been learnt** - 28 May 2021: 31 participants. - **Qualifying Work Experience** – 8 June 2021: approx. 75 attendees. - **Law Commission Roundtable** – 15 July 2021: 30 participants. - **Employability and CLE** – 15 September 2021: 30 participants. - **Qualifying Work Experience** – 23 September 2021: 58 participants - **Innocence work in clinical legal education: What it is, what it isn’t?** 29 September 2021: 112 participants. - **Innocence work in clinical legal education: The impact of innocence organisations on students** 27 October 2021: 25 participants. - **Global Day of Action Panel Event to coincide with COP26, “How can law clinics adapt to tackle climate change”** (Kings College, Strathclyde and York): 3 November 2021: 82 participants. - ‘ **Thinking about clinical legal education’ book launch** , hosted by Omar Madhloom and Hugh McFaul, 7 January 2022: 44 participants. - **Business Law Clinics** 18 January 2022 (Bristol): 66 participants. - **The Student Symposium** 25 March 2022, Online international event with student presentations from 9 different universities: 200 participants We also continue to advertise events that are likely to be of interest to our members, such as LawWorks events, the Streetlaw Best Practice events and so on. ## **Regional Networking Hubs:** - Clinics in the North-West of the country have continued to hold regular meet ups to share good practice, discuss latest clinic developments and catch up with fellow clinicians. These are relatively informal and are held approximately twice a year. - CLEO has continued to offer to facilitate these hubs in other parts of the country. ## **Clinic Outreach/Mentoring:** - During the reporting period, a working group of CLEO trustees approached colleagues from several UK universities which do not currently have a functioning legal advice clinic with the offer of informal mentoring to assist colleagues in the steps needed to develop a clinic presence within these institutions. ## **Qualifying Work Experience (QWE):** - During the 2021-22 period, CLEO published its guidance to assist pro bono supervisors in deciding whether the work undertaken in their university clinics/pro bono centres can be counted as Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) for the purposes of the Solicitors Qualifying - - - Exam. The guidance is housed on the CLEO website: https://www.cleo uk.org/qualifying work-experience/ - CLEO also established a QWE Panel during the 2021-22 period. The panel is made up of five experienced clinicians from within the CLEO network and aims to provide guidance to university law clinics on deciding, in more complex cases than those outlined by the CLEO guidance, whether a clinic activity can be classed as QWE. Clinicians can submit a query via the CLEO website for consideration by the panel. ## **Online Presence:** - Work on redevelopment of the CLEO website continued. The processes for registering new membership applications was streamlined.
