Radnor YFC seeks to meet the needs of rural young people through a variety of educational, training and social programmes that encourage community involvement and concern for our environment. 480 young people between the ages of 10 – 28 years have been involved in the federation during the past twelve months. The objectives of the charity are: - To advance the education and personal development of young members of the public at large in agriculture, rural life and affairs, international understanding home crafts, the environment and related subjects and; - In the interests of the social welfare of such members, to provide and promote the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupations, being facilities, which will improve their spiritual and mental capacities, health and well-being, raise awareness, selfreliance and individual responsibility so that they may develop as individuals into full citizens; - To promote its activities through the medium of Welsh and English and to ensure those activities enhance the members’ understanding and knowledge of Welsh Rural Life, Welsh Culture and the Welsh Language, along with providing an understanding of other cultures.
Radnor YFC ran its normal calendar of events with a full year of events, competitions, training and social development of its members supported by a loyal and hardworking team of volunteers.
Reserves policy - The Radnor YFC Executive committee has an agreed a reserves policy.
Achievements
The achievements of the federation were outlined by our County Chair, Sian Davies.
I will start with our 76[th] Annual Rally hosted by Cantal YFC by kind permission of the Rees Family, Upper Pentre. The day was a fun filled day with every club taking part with Radnor Valley taking the overall shield home for the third-year running.
We were then in full swing for the ‘Boots and Bow ties’ Chairman’s ball held at Ella’s home ‘The Hendre’ by kind permission of the Harris Family. A wonderful evening was had with guest speaker Nigel Owens MBE, New Rivals local band and of course the promise auction raising a staggering £20,000 for two
charities Birmingham Children Hospital and Cystic Fibrosis along with Radnor YFC. A huge congratulations must go to Ella for a fantastic event which was worthy of many months of hard work.
Royal Welsh Show 2024 was soon upon us with Radnor out in force once again coming 3[rd] place overall. Huge congratulation to you all.
Ella, Frances Bevan and Lauren Morris then kindly took the Youth Forum on their annual summer trip to London, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, for some members the first time visiting the big smoke along with past member Sioned Davies leading them as a tour guide round the city.
It was then the evening of the county AGM in Felindre Village Hall where before I knew it Ella was handing me the chain as your New County Chair with Elizabeth voted in as my vice. Our first event was Kington Show where Radnor were hosts of the day. Several clubs from Radnorshire and Herefordshire battled it out with us even having the chance to have it’s a knockout competition in the main ring and Radnor Valley bringing the overall trophy back to Radnor as the champions of the day.
This year was a special year for Radnor YFC. As a county we are celebrating our 80[th] Year which would be a huge honour for me as county chair but also a busy one. As a county we felt the need to set up an 80[th] year committee with past and present members to lead events throughout the year and were delighted to have Howard Nixon elected in as the 80[th] Committee Chair who we knew would be more than capable for the job. We were pleased to launch our 80[th] Year clothing with a variety of items to sell. We were then delighted to set up our 80-th Year choir with over 50 members old and new joining together to practice every Wednesday evening ahead of singing at several events including the president carol service, Christmas event at the Lakeside, Penybont Tractor Run, Finals night of pantomime week in the albert hall and then of course the luncheon in July. We were extremely grateful for Rhian Duggan, Cath Fairclough and Gwyn Price guidance along with our pianist Suzanne and Andrew to help us along the way.
Elizabeth, Lynwen and Lauren then attended the County AGM in Caernarfon on my behalf as I was unable to attend where Radnor were awarded the Beyon Thomas trophy for the highest number of points across all competitions under 18 which was a huge honour for the county.
Our annual Quiz night was then upon us once again in Penybont Hall with a brilliant number of teams competing and Penybont coming out champions this year! Jayne and Barry Bevan did a marvellous job acting as our quiz master’s for the evening.
National competitions day saw our Junior public speaking swiping first place with the team comprising of Laura Bevan, Ellen Nicholls and Tori Davies with Laura wining best chair and Tori winning best speaker. Huge congratulations must go to Tori on being crowned National Junior Member of the year – an outstanding achievement.
We then travelled to Knighton Market and the Goat House by kind permission of the Price Family for our Annual Stockjudging day competition where Tom Evans Howey YFC was awarded Junior Stockman and Elizabeth Swancott awarded Senior Stockman of the year. We then returned down that part of Radnor a few weeks later to Whitewall farm for Field Day, kindly hosted by Presteigne YFC by kind permission of David and Sue Rogers and Family. A superb site with a high standard of competition throughout the day. Howey took the trophy home for the second-year running, Congratulations to all members who took place.
Lewis Bevan was awarded the National Junior Stockman of the year which he then went on to win at the Five Nation final which was a huge achievement, congratulations Lewis.
Our Harvest festival was held in St Andrew Church Presteigne with all thirteen clubs in attendance and food boxes being donated to Knighton food bank.
No rest for the wicked with us entering a jam-packed November full of public speaking. Congratulations to our Junior member of the year Lowri Bayliss Penybont YFC and Senior Member of the year Ella Harris Teme Valley YFC. Ella then was crowned Wales YFC Senior Member of the year where she then represented Wales at the national finals in Leamington spa and gained a highly deserved 4[th] place. There truly was no stopping Ella despite her due date just being a after the competition. However, baby Hammond allowed Ella to have the experience which is one I’m sure she won’t forget. Our overall public speaking winners of the weekend were Cantal YFC, so huge congratulations to them.
Lynwen and I attended the Remembrance parade in Llandrindod Wells to represent the county on remembrance Sunday which once again is always an honour to do.
Radnor members then ventured to Carmarthen for the Wales YFC Eisteddfod where Eleri Davies gained 3[rd] place in the instrumental solo and Hollie Abberley first place in the homework section.
It was then back to Presteigne Sports centre for our Winter Sports league for six weeks with Dolau YFC taking the victory for the second-year running. We decided to change the pool and darts this year to a Sunday afternoon which was held end of November in Rhosgoch Golf Club which was an overall successful and enjoyable afternoon.
Winter fair was soon upon us where Radnor were out in full force. Geraint Mathias won the under 28 beef competition so congratulation to him and all fellow members.
December had crept upon us and despite Storm Darragh trying to stop our plans we battled our way through to Llanddewi Hall for our Ally Pally Qualifiers. This year we held the qualifies ahead of the event in January to allow every club to enter with an unlimited number of entries. A tremendous night was had with 7 players then through to the big event in late January.
The following day we then headed to Cardiff with 52 Youth forum members to Winter Wonderland and Cinderella the pantomime. Huge thank you to Lynwen, Delyth and Sian Davies for coming along with me.
Our annual presidents carol service was then held in Rhayader Smithfield Market which starred our 80[th] Year Choir and members from across the county taking part in service. A charity raffle was held raising £320.00 for RABI, once again grateful for the support received from local businesses.
Members were the busy carol singing across the county for local charities along with ractor runs taking place, we still made time for one last trip before Christmas. It was time for me to take a 70-seater bus of over 18 members to Hereford Races Christmas Jumper Day. Despite this being the day after Mad Friday, members enjoyed the day out in the Christmas spirit with the county subsidising the bus and tickets for members to enjoy.
January 2025, we thought would be quiet, this was definitely not the case! The first Saturday in the month Lynwen and me attended the Youth forum Dinner in
Llanddewi Hall which was then followed with several pantomime practices in full swing.
We then of course had an event we needed to start thinking about Ally Pally Takes two! Well, what a night we had again – with a huge shoutout to Mark Nixon S&F chair and his vice Theo Davies for their hard work and passion to get the event up and running for the second year in a row. Many thanks to Roger Abberely and Will Davies again for comparing - a night that will truly go down in Radnor History.
Pantomime week had arrived and with 12 pantomimes we had a jam-packed week ahead of us. Massive well done to Aberedw YFC for winning the One plus Competition, Rhian Hughes Cantal YFC winning the Time to Shine and Penybont YFC crowned winners of the Pantomime competition with their production entitled ‘The Old Women who lived in the Shoe’ Written and produced by Edward Morgan. Our panto winners then travelled down to Llanelli where they gained a 6[th] place overall. Congratulations Penybont YFC.
Wales Public speaking day was held on the showground in true Radnor style, we gained a well-deserved third place overall. That evening a 70-seater bus of over 18 members ventured to Hereford on Easter Sunday for a post lambing social.
Radnor members then ventured up the Caernarfon for the Wales Field Day where Radnor were out in force once again gaining a highly deserving 2[nd] place overall. Huge congratulations to everyone.
Before full rally preparations were underway, I was keen to encourage a rural affairs tour subsidised by the county for current and past members. So, the middle of May saw 50 of us travel to Pickstock farm and abattoir in Telford and Welshpool to enjoy a Sunday afternoon farm tour followed by a carvery in the Abermule Inn. A huge thank you must go to Greg and Libby Pickstock and family for hosting us and for their fantastic hospitality. It truly was a brilliant day showing us around their incredible enterprises.
Howard, Delyth, Elizabeth and I attended the Garden Party in Buckingham palace – an opportunity we were truly honoured to have had as part of the 80[th] year anniversary, one we will always remember.
Pre rally stockjudging was then upon us with some great individual results and a huge thank you must go to our host venues, families for everyone who provided stock.
Before we looked round full preparations where underway in Llanbadarn for the County Rally. A tremendous day was had by all, and huge congratulations to Aberedw on taking the trophy home at the end of the day. A huge thank you must go once again to our sponsors, hosts club and most importantly our host family, Gwyn, Jill, Katie, Jodie and Gemma for providing us with a superb site.
Radnor then ventured down to Lampeter for Wales YFC Sports day with some great results with members then going to on to represent our county at National competitions weekend. No only were our sports teams up in Stafford but also Aberedw Cheerleaders, Dolau YFC junior Reading team and howey fencing team – so a huge congratulations for representing Radnor and Wales that weekend.
Just as I thought my year couldn’t get any busier, it was then full steam to the first weekend in July for the chair’s ball and 80[th] celebrations held at home.
The Friday night saw around 450 young farmers old and new come together to Siani’s Shindig which was a great evening and a huge success. The profit from the ball have been spilt evenly between the 13 clubs to hold new members night or trips to celebrate 80 years of Radnor YFC. This is something I am so glad we have been able to do and give back to our members who helped supported the ball.
The Saturday then saw a band of helpers which I am extremely grateful for to prepare for the 80[th] Sunday lunch. What a day we had! Over 400 people gathered to celebrate this milestone. We had a fantastic meal by fingers and forks, Neil did a top job on the bar, our 80[th] choir entertained us all and Aled Jones was a fantastic guest speaker.
My family and I are truly overwhelmed with the support we received for the whole weekend. We had an incredible weekend of celebrations and most importantly raising tremendous amount of in the region of £17500 for my two chosen charities, Charles Renton Unit in Herford and Brain Tumour UK. I must personally thank everyone who donated so generously to the auction, everyone who bought and Sunderland’s for doing a superb job selling. Thank you to Howard for all your support you have given me throughout all the 80[th] year celebrations, it’s been much appreciated. There truly is too many to thank,
you know who you are. We are truly grateful for your support, and I can’t thank you all enough. What a way to end a very special 80[th] year as Radnor County Chair.
Finally, we were then onto the Royal Welsh Show where we had some fantastic individual results and we ended up 5[th] overall as a county so huge congratulations to everyone on a great week.
Sadly, my time as chair is ending. Writing this report has allowed me time for reflection of what we as a county have gained over the past 12 months. I am happy we have been able to give so much back to our members with social events and discount rates for trips alongside a truly jam-packed calendar.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Radnor Federation of Young Farmers Clubs
Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Radnor Federation of Young Farmers Clubs ('the Company')
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 30 June 2025.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
-
the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
