## Report to the Charity Commission for the Year ending 30th June 2021

## Objectives and Activities

Radnor YFC seeks to meet the needs of rural young people through a variety of educational, training and social programmes that encourage community involvement and concern for our environment. 520 young people between the ages of 10 – 26 years have been involved in the federation during the past twelve months. The objectives of the charity are: - To advance the education and personal development of young members of the public at large in agriculture, rural life and affairs, international understanding home crafts, the environment and related subjects and; - In the interests of the social welfare of such members, to provide and promote the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupations, being facilities, which will improve their spiritual and mental capacities, health and well-being, raise awareness, self- reliance and individual responsibility so that they may develop as individuals into full citizens; - To promote its activities through the medium of Welsh and English and to ensure those activities enhance the members’ understanding and knowledge of Welsh Rural Life, Welsh Culture and the Welsh Language, along with providing an understanding of other cultures.

Radnor YFC would normally organise a full year of ‘live’ events for its membership supported by a loyal and hardworking team of volunteers, this all changed due to the pandemic and Radnor YFC has had to adapt to the extreme challenges that the Covid pandemic has created with nearly all events moving online.

Reserves policy - The Radnor YFC Executive committee has an agreed a reserves policy.

Achievements

The achievements of the federation were outlined by our County Chairman, Matt Price.

If we rewind 12 months, just after the success of Radnor YFC’s first ever virtual rally where we held our County AGM online, via Zoom, back when Zoom was new and exciting and now we are all sick of it! The wonderful AJ gave her report of a really challenging yet highly successful year for Radnor YFC and handed the reins over to me, with John voted in as Vice-Chair, we were ready to hit the road and try our best to continue the great work and continue to steer Radnor YFC through a global pandemic.

And we were off, and in a change to our normal programme, we hit the ground running in October with our Pumpkin Carving Competition, where we had members, young and old carving away and sending in some excellent entries-well done to those who took the prizes. We were also entertained throughout October by Becca Williams appearance in the Farmer’s Apprentice.

November came along and we were still unable to meet each other in person so we held our Winter Competitions Competition online and were absolutely thrilled that we had entries from every club and members were still engaging with YFC competitions online and we were still able to read out to our members. There was a range of competitions, from wreaths, table centre pieces, Christmas decorations, cupcakes to cooking and we had a great number of entries for each competition which is brilliant! In amongst it all, we also had a stab at our first ever, Virtual Carcass Judging. Our members from across the county then went on to represent Radnor in the Virtual Winter Fair, gaining 3[rd] place overall!

December only means one thing . . . IT’S CHRISTMAS! With the country back in lockdown it was tricky on times to feel the Christmas spirt with no mixing with other households, dark by 4 o’clock,

but Radnor YFC were there on hand to help embrace that Christmas spirit. To get the ball rolling, we hosted the Radnor YFC Quiz-Mas Quiz on Facebook live where we had a good number of people getting involved and having a giggle, even if it was just as me looking like plonker in and elf suit. It was great to see members getting involved in activities too at club level, with Dolau YFC organising Christmas shoeboxes for the homeless and Howey YFC setting up an excellent Christmas display.

In amongst the virtual festivities, there was also some competitions to be done, in the form of Junior and Senior Member of the Year. It was the first time we had done this competition virtually so who knew how it was going to work- but it did work! Thank you to our judges for signing on to judge for us, and a big thanks for your ongoing support for Radnor YFC. As you can imagine, it was a tough ordeal with Radnor being blessed with so many amazing members, many of which deserve the title of Member of the Year, but when it came down to it, our Junior Member of the Year was Mr Cheeky Chappy himself, Adam Watson, Cantal YFC and the Senior Member of the Year title went to the Queen of Carcass Judging, Miss Elizabeth Swancott, Teme Valley YFC.

Now, what’s Christmas without a bit of Carol Singing? As we were still in a very dull old lockdown, we had to think outside the box and find an alternative way to raise money for our charities whilst still adhering to guidelines, so Boris didn’t tell us off. So, I did my usual thing of scrambling around some members from each club, asking another favour from them and as they always do, they came up trumps and we were able to bash together the Radnor YFC Charity Single of ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’ which was a big hit on our social media platform and raised money for Teenage Cancer Trust and the DPJ Foundation. A huge thank you to our members for getting involved and helping me pull it off and of course, thank you to everyone who donated!

2021and a very different looking Radnor YFC. With a fairly quiet January, with lots of work going on behind the scenes, our first task was to mark the Pantomime Week. Obviously, with theatres banned and still not allowed to meet up, we were unable to hold a Panto Competition this year and stand for hours singing and rehearsing gin a freezing cold village hall, so instead, we decided to mark the occasion by having a week of sharing our memories of performances been and gone. It was lovely to see the response we had from current and past members and really made me think about how much we all get out of our week at the Albert Hall whether you’re on the stage, or in front of the stage, there is so much to gain from Panto week.

Public Speaking! Once again, we had to find an alternative way to hold these competitions, so we held Radnor’s first ever Virtual Public Speaking Competitions. First up, was the Junior Reading, with first place going to Presteigne YFC and the judge commenting on the maturity, confidence and excellent delivery from all of our junior members. Next up was the intermediate Call My Bluff Competition where we had a right old laugh at our members trying to decipher the meanings of some of the words and a really enjoyable evening for us all. Teme Valley YFC were able to retain their title, winning the competition for the second year on a row. Bit worrying really, as it shows that Teme Valley girls make really good liars :/.

March seemed to be full of meetings at Wales and National level, with lots to discuss about membership, membership age and what YFC is going to look like in the next 12 months. After a great discussion in our Exec meeting, the vote swaying to increase the membership age to 28 so I took that to the National YFC meeting on behalf of Radnor and it the motion was carried. March also saw the return of the Snapchat and Instagram takeovers which were very much enjoyed by many and were very informative on times! Thank you to our members and friends for giving up your time to make this happen.

April saw our members progress on to the Wales YFC Public Speaking Weekend and boy didn’t they smash it! Ella Harris, Teme Valley YFC Winning the Situations Vacant Competition, Becky Duggan, Emily Davies and Amy Edwards winning the Junior Public Speaking and Sarah Meredith, Amy Edwards, Mark Nixon and Gemma Price coming third in the Intermediate Brainstrust! What a day!

In May, were we given the go ahead to hold a meeting in person with our members and had every intention to, but unfortunately, the weather was against us, so we had to resort back to Zoom. We also marked Mental Health Awareness Week in May, and please be assured, our advice and support for your mental health is not only in May. We as a federation, and me as a friend are here for you to talk to 24/7 if you feel like you need some advice or support with looking after your mental wellbeing. I’m not saying that we have all the answers, but we can point you in the direction of someone who does!

June, only means one thing . . . RALLY! And again, we had to resort to a Virtual Rally, but were lucky enough to get some live, face to face competitions in amongst it too! First up was the Blue Texel Judging which we were able to hold alongside Brecknock YFC in Builth Market and it was so good to get the members out and about again! Then was the Section D Cob Judging, again hosted live by kind permission of Tanya Baldwin and family. It was lovely to see all of our members again and I was so impressed with how well everyone adhered to the guidance in place-massive thank you! With Radnor being a bit short on Highland Cattle, we went back to the virtual for the judging as well as many of our other competitions.

With no Royal Welsh Show we began working on ideas and events to get the county up and running again as the restrictions begin to ease across Wales. I just want to say a huge, heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported me and our federation in the last 12 months. It hasn’t been the easiest of years, and we haven’t been able to deliver everything that we wanted to but rest assured, plans are in motion to restore Radnor YFC back to it’s former glory.
