TRUSTEES’ REPORT

The trustees present their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2023.

Structure, Governance and Management

The charity was formed in 2015 to continue the work of an earlier charity which was founded in 2003. It is called The English Music Festival, but is also known as The EMF.

The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), governed by a Constitution that was adopted on 24 February 2015. The members of the CIO are its trustees. Membership is not transferable.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for selecting and recruiting suitable new trustees. Every trustee must be appointed for a term of three years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the Board. The minimum number of trustees is three, and the maximum number that may be appointed is twelve. In selecting individuals for appointment, the trustees must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO.

Day-to-day decisions are made by the Managing Trustee, reporting to the Board of Trustees.

Financial Statements

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the accounts and comply with the charity’s constitution, the Charities Act 2011 and the second edition of the Statement of recommended practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (SORP FRS 102). This report with consolidated accounts deals with the activities of the charity itself and of its wholly owned subsidiary, EMF Endeavours Limited.

Charitable Objectives and Activities

The object of the charity is the advancement of public education particularly in the arts of music, drama and poetry by:

  1. the promotion of English music at regular festivals and other events;

  2. the promotion of concerts, recitals, drama performances, exhibitions, lectures and other arts events anywhere in the United Kingdom; and

  3. any other wholly charitable means as the trustees shall decide.

The charity’s main activities to further these objects comprise:

The trustees have paid due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in deciding the activities undertaken by the charity during the year. The charity’s activities are carried out entirely for public benefit.

Achievements and performance

Truro 2022

The EMF was pleased to return to Truro Cathedral in July 2022, with a full day’s programme including a violin and piano recital of music by Elgar, Ireland and Vaughan Williams; a song recital from celebrated baritone Neal Davies and pianist Nathan Williamson, with Somervell’s A Shropshire Lad and Vaughan Williams’s Songs of Travel alongside songs by Delius and Ireland; a fascinating talk on music engraving; and an evening choral concert from the Cathedral’s own St Mary’s Singers, in a programme of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Gibbons, Whitlock, Elgar and Howells. Although audiences were very enthusiastic, they were not as numerous as expected.

Sweden and Faroe Islands

A week later we visited Stockholm, with Rupert Marshall-Luck playing Vaughan Williams’s Violin Sonata at the Gustav Vasa Church and the Storkyrkan, with Martin Sturfält. This was followed by a visit to the Faroe Islands, where Rupert and Em Marshall-Luck performed Richard Blackford’s Dreams and Spells – an EMF commission, and a beautiful and powerful piece that we were delighted to have had written for us. As the work is based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest , with the narrator taking the part of Prospero and with the violin as Ariel, performing it on a tiny church perched on a wave-lashed rock next to the ruins of St Magnus Cathedral was the most appropriate and atmospheric setting imaginable.

Paul Carr Light of Love launch

In August EM Records was delighted to have the opportunity to launch EMRCD068, Paul Carr’s the Light of Love , in the Chiesa della Madonna dell’Orto in Venice. A packed and enthusiastic audience welcomed the beautiful work, which was given a full performance as part of the launch by the artists featured on the disc.

Autumn 2022

The Autumn EMF took the form of a day of concerts held in the luxurious and intimated venue of the 1901 Arts Club in London. Sadly, this coincided with a rail strike, which heavily reduced audience numbers. Nevertheless, a select but eager audience enjoyed three concerts and a talk, commencing with a cello and violin recital, an afternoon concert of British Light Piano Music from pianist, Radio 3 presenter and EMF Vice-President Paul Guinery, and an evening concert of Elgar, Parry and Ireland. A talk and EMF Lunch added to the convivial, informal and informative atmosphere; the day was enjoyed by all present.

EMF in Johannesburg

Our first EMF event in 2023 was a trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, for a series of concerts, workshops and rehearsals in collaboration with Peter Cartwright, a South African pianist and faculty member of the University of Witswaterand (Wits University) in Johannesburg. Rupert Marshall-Luck and Peter Cartwright performed programmes which included works by Holst and Delius in a variety of locations, including venues in Makhanda and Humansdorp on the Eastern Cape, and at the Theatre on the Square and Wits University in Johannesburg. At the latter, we were able to bring the music of British composers to around 120 (mainly black) students, who displayed a level of enthusiasm and engagement well beyond that which we at the EMF had encountered before. We were especially pleased to have been able to introduce the students to the music of Frederick Delius, of whom most of them had never previously heard. They were so enthralled by his music that many of them went on to buy discs to explore and discover his music further; while one musician, a jazz pianist, was so taken by Delius that he immediately downloaded every existing recording of the Delius Violin Sonatas and determined to create a jazz project based on Delius's music. He also apparently spent an entire birthday barbecue party talking about Rupert’s and Peter's performance and saying how it had changed his life.

Rupert also delivered a masterclass on writing for string instruments at the University at which, also, he was tremendously impressed by the commitment, interest and enjoyment of the students.

1901 Arts Club

A second day of concerts at the 1901 Arts Club, originally programmed for November 2022, had been postponed to May 2023. This was better-attended than the October day of concerts, and followed the same format of a morning concert (a solo-violin recital), an EMF Lunch, an afternoon recital, given by Duncan Honeybourne on the piano, a talk and an evening concert. The latter featured Duncan Honeybourne and Rupert Marshall-Luck and included the World Premiere Performance of Ivor Gurney’s Sonata in D major, alongside works by Elgar, which concert was very highly acclaimed.

May 2023 EMF

The May EMF was extremely successful, with good audience numbers and tremendously positive feedback. We were honoured and pleased to give the World Premiere performances of Paul Lewis’s Festival Overture , of William Lloyd Webber’s Scenes from Childhood , of William Alwyn’s Serenade for Orchestra and of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s The Road All Paved with Stars , all of which were performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Martin Yates; other World Premieres included Robin Milford’s Rhapsody in A minor and Richard Blackford’s Tango , played by Rupert Marshall-Luck and Peter Cartwright, and Richard Storry’s The Guitarist’s Prayer , in a recital given by young and brilliant guitarist Fabio Fernandes. Other highlights of the Festival included a performance of Moeran’s Cello Concerto by Raphael Wallfisch with the BBC Concert Orchestra, a Coronation concert by the Strand Consort, and a concert from the Guards Association Band; while The Moonrakers provided a different aspect to the Festival with their folk music concert, and the New Foxtrot Serenaders with their 1920s and 30s jazz.

FUTURE PLANS

South Africa 2024

We hope to return to South Africa in February 2024 and to take works by British composers to various locations in and around Johannesburg, as well as returning to Wits University to deliver concerts and masterclasses.

Fundraising concerts

Following an Appeal, including a request to EMF performers and venues to help us with fundraising events, we are pleased to announce two EMF fundraising concerts. The first of these will take place at the Conway Hall on 9th March 2024, with artists including cellist Raphael Wallfisch, American tenor Brian Thorsett and pianist Michael Dussek. On Saturday 6th April we will be running a day of concerts at St James’s Church, Sussex Gardens in Paddington, London, again with the aim of raising funds for the EMF.

Educational project

We are extremely excited about an educational project that we are booked to deliver in March 2024, in which we will be working with three primary schools to bring children who currently have no live music provisions a series of concerts and workshops, in which they will be introduced to the violin, how it works and the various different sounds and effects it can produce, and will even have a chance to play the instrument. We hope to develop this collaboration by offering large-scale concerts to the schools and to any other interested schools in the area.

We have released five new discs on EM Records between July 2022 and June 2023:

Friends’ Scheme

The EMF is loyally supported by a Friends’ Scheme which continues to grow, with a membership which has now reached over 200 active members and 374 total members (an increase of nearly 8% on last year). From the national scheme a local Oxfordshire branch continues to give help promoting the Festival within Oxfordshire.

Communication with members

The EMF keeps its members, and the wider public, closely informed of its progress and development, and of future events. It does this through its excellent website, a newsletter The Spirit of England and through regular email bulletins

Spirited

The EMF publishes an annual glossy Gazette, Spirited , which features authoritative articles on many musical subjects, ranging from British composers and musicians through to wider aspects of British cultural life such as art and film. There are also regular features such as interviews with musicians and composers and book, CD and concert reviews.

Financial Review

Total income decreased from £196,115 to £153,386. The deficit for the year amounted to £60,303. At 30 June 2023, unrestricted funds amounted to £112,526.

The trustees’ policy is to hold sufficient reserves to fund at least the main festival for a year in advance and the minimum sum required is estimated to be £100,000. This objective has been maintained up to 30 June 2023.

THE TRUSTEES OF THE ENGLISH MUSIC FESTIVAL

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the consolidated accounts of the Group comprising The English Music Festival (“the Charity”) and its subsidiary undertaking for the year ended 30 June 2023, comprising a Statement of Financial Activities for the Group, Balance Sheets for the Group and the Charity and supporting Notes.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the trustees of the Charity you are responsible for the preparation of the consolidated accounts of the Group in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’) and you have chosen to prepare consolidated accounts for the Group. You are satisfied that the accounts of both the Charity and the Group are not required by charity law to be audited and have chosen instead to have an independent examination.

I report in respect of my examination of the consolidated accounts. I have carried out my examination under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

An independent examination does not involve gathering all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently does not cover all the matters that an auditor considers in giving their opinion on the accounts. The planning and conduct of an audit goes beyond the limited assurance that an independent examination can provide. Consequently I express no opinion as to whether the consolidated accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and my report is limited to those specific matters set out in the independent examiner’s statement.

Independent Examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records, with respect to the Charity, were not kept as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act and, with respect to its subsidiary, were not kept as required by section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

  4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1 ACCOUNTING POLICIES

BASIS OF ACCOUNTING

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with FRS 102 “The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland” (“FRS 102”). The disclosure requirements of section 1A of FRS 102 have been applied other than where additional disclosure is required to show a true and fair view.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102.

There are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue, and so the going concern basis of accounting has been adopted.

The accounts consolidate the accounts of the charity with those of the subsidiary company, EMF Endeavours Limited. Intra-group transactions and balances are fully eliminated on consolidation.

INCOME RECOGNITION

All income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount of income receivable can be measured reliably.

Subscriptions and donations are accounted for when received. Income Tax recoverable in respect of Gift Aid is recognised at the time of the donation. Sponsorship for concerts, festivals and other events is recognised when the event takes place. Sales and costs of recordings and publications are accounted for on an accruals basis.

It is not considered possible to quantify the value of donated services and facilities, or the value of services provided by volunteers, which have not been included in the financial statements.

EXPENDITURE RECOGNITION

Expenditure is recognised when there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer resources to a third party, settlement is probable and the amount can be measured reliably.

FIXED ASSETS AND DEPRECIATION

The company has begun the construction of an office and storage building on leasehold land. This is being depreciated on a straight line basis over its expected useful life of five years.

STOCK AND WORK IN PROGRESS

Stock is recorded at the lower of cost and net realisable value.

VAT

The charity is not registered for VAT, so irrecoverable VAT is included in the related expenses. The subsidiary is VAT registered.

4 EMPLOYEES AND TRUSTEES

The trustees are considered to be the charity's key management personnel. None of the trustees received any remuneration for their services as trustees.

Mrs Em Marshall Luck was paid a salary of £38,500 for her services as the trust's chief executive and administrator. She is the charity's only employee.

One trustee was paid fees amounting in total to £16,308 (2022: £14,306) by the charity and its subsidiary for performance fees, recording fees, editing fees, storage, royalties and disc cover artwork.

These payments to trustees were authorised by the trustees, and made with the approval of the Charity Commission.

Travelling and accommodation expenses were either met directly or reimbursed to two trustees by the charity and its subsidiary, amounting in total to £47,803 (2022: £25,164).

5 TAXATION

As a registered charity, there is no liability to taxation.
