Yomelelani is only partly funded by the South African Government grants from which this financial year covered about 43% of costs. It should be noted that the school has more than trebled in size to about 250 children over the past 7 years.
The school provides a structured childhood education up to Grade R for children aged 3 months to 6 years old. It is one of the few ECD Schools authorised to offer Grade R tuition which greatly enhances their pupils’ chance of being accepted at the local Primary schools at their first attempt.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the The Trustees have, at all times, had regard to the guidance issued by the public benefit in relation to Charity Commission on Public benefit. these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Monies raised in this and recent years have been used to eliminate the shortfall in funding the day to day operations of the school; to finance the building of additional classrooms to allow the expansion of numbers to 250 pupils and to upgrade the kitchens, play areas and fabric of the somewhat dilapidated buildings. The bulk of the day to day costs relate to staff salaries and nutrition costs
This last year has seen a planned change, with the support of the Western Cape Education Department, resulting in the creation of two Pre-Grade R classes in addition to the existing two Grade R classes involving 103 children aged 5 to 6. This means that Yomelelani ECDC will now qualify as a Pre-primary School and receive direct grants for Grade R teachers whilst maintaining it’s majority Day Care Centre and Creche status with appropriate subsidies.
This change will materially alter the shortfall/funding in percentage terms with the requirement falling from 75% of operating costs to under 50% for the coming year 2023-24.
It should be noted that teaching staff continue to be encouraged to extend their qualifications up to the required educational levels for teaching Grade R . The justification for continued support lies in the fact that we believe that Yomelelani is currently the only township ECDC in the Western Cape of South Africa providing a near guaranteed route into the Government Primary School system at a pupil’s first attempt. Furthermore, the educational model in terms of class size, quality of teaching staff and managerial control are virtually unique within such a poor Township environment
