Activities
Empower the Gambia provides training & resources for communities in rural Gambia in order to alleviate poverty. We first visited Bansang in 2008 & set up the charity in 2012. We sponsor children, support schools, medical services, a poultry cooperative & kitchen gardens. We plant community libraries with sponsored librarians & have completed a building programme. We now work with 7 communities.
Objects: 1) Linking Individuals, Organisations And Charities Together To Benefit The Communities Of Sub-Saharan Africa To Relieve Poverty Through Education, Training And Empowerment. 2) Supporting A Number Of Nursery Schools, Lower Basic Schools And Upper Basic Schools By Providing Resources And Training For The Teachers To Enhance Their Teaching To Both Children And Adults Which In Turn Benefits The Students And The Wider Community To Relieve Themselves Of Poverty. 3) Running A Child Sponsorship Program To Pay Nursery School Fees Where The Family In Sub-Saharan Africa Is In Poverty And Cannot Afford To Pay For The Education That Would Enable The Child A Head Start Once Reaching Free Education At The Age Of 7 Years. In The Longer Term This Would In Turn Enable These Children In Sub-Saharan Africa To Have A Better Opportunity To Obtain Employment And A Better Standard Of Living In Their Adult Lives. 4) Running A Program Of Installing Solar Lights Into Rural Schools To Allow Teachers To Prepare Lessons, Run Homework And Revision Classes In The Evenings, Allow Community Meetings, Adult Literacy Classes And For Social Events. These Communities Do Not Have Access To Electricity And Having A Community Building Available At Night Times Means That Education Can Be Advanced And Inturn Poverty Can Be Minimised. 5) Providing Opportunities For Sharing Skills And Training With The Communities Of Sub-Saharan Africa By People From The UK Volunteering To Teach First Aid, Teacher Training And Sport Training. This Both Advances Education And Health Care And In Turn Saves Lives Through Increased Awareness And Training. 6) Supporting Small Businesses Set Up Opportunities Such As Bicycle Maintenance, Poultry Production, Plastic Bottle Solar Light Bulbs And Solar Powered Mobile Phone Charging.
