Section D                      Achievements and performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The charity continues to make progress, particularly through the new school building which provides modern, well equipped accommodation for the top 3 years of primary education. Namely Years 6, 7 and 8. This is children aged between 11 and 14. This land and building are the property of Little Faces Schools, Kenya, the charity.

2021 was a difficult year for both the school and the charity. Children were unable to attend school due to covid and the charity faced enormous difficulty in carrying out fundraising activities. During the crisis, all children were fed and food and water was also provided to their families. Teachers were paid throughout the closure in order to retain their services for the future.

The charity was unfortunately subject to a computer scam and paid over funds for transport of the equipment that did not materialise. The loss did not materially affect the charity nor its support to the school.

The school continues to obtain excellent exam results and thus has a long waiting list to attend. It also has a thriving scout troop which many pupils support.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** environmental projects. **Details of any funds materially in deficit Further financial review details (Optional information)**

The charity currently holds no reserves as all funds available, in excess of 3 month’s running costs, are being utilised towards the costs of the purchase of a plot of land behind the new Little Faces School in Bombolulu, Mombasa. This plot will be used as a playground for the children and also to provide outside space for environmental projects.

You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant about:

- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);

- how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;

- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy

The accounts show a surplus of £12,944 for the year at year end, compared to a deficit of £23,280 in 2020, due to the building of the new school ground floor.

The charity raised funds through various means as below:

1. Child sponsorship from individuals, teams and companies £18,940 compared to £19,088 in 2020.

2. Fund raising, Trust Funding and donations from individuals and groups with the support of DHL, Rotary and friends of Little Faces Schools, Kenya £28,090 compared to £19,295 in 2020. An excellent result, bearing in mind the impact of covid.

3. Matching Grants from the DHL Foundation and Rotary

## adopted.

District Grants £9,000 compared to £12,142 in 2020. The amount was impacted by covid restrictions on fundraising activities. 4. Gift aid and interest of £3,375 compared to £14,095 in 2020, which included gift aid from previous years.

This income has supported the activities of the school including teaching costs and food for the children. It has also been reserved to support the purchase of the plot of land for the future playground.

Children from all religions, faiths, ethnic groups, tribes and backgrounds are offered education at Little Faces Academy. There is no discrimination of any kind.

## **Section F Other optional information**

Little Faces Academy continues to thrive, improve and expand, due in part to the financial support provided by Little Faces Schools, Kenya. The new school in Bombolulu will be used for the education of children in Years 6, 7 and 8 until the new school education system comes into effect in January 2023. The new school is in reasonably close proximity to the existing school, Little Faces Academy, in Kisimani, thus enabling children to attend the Bombolulu school with ease and pride. The new school is wholly owned by this charity.

Income from donations, child support, fundraising and grants is utilised for the advancement of the children and the school. The only payments to Trustees is to cover travel expenses. No deductions are made by Trustees for any other reason. This income has directly improved the lives of more than 350 children already. It gives them a chance of breaking out of the poverty they are currently living in. It gives them hope of a better future for themselves, for their families and ultimately for the whole community in this sadly deprived area of Kenya.

Without the support of so many people in so many ways, Little Faces Academy, with the enormous financial support provided by Little Faces Schools, Kenya, could not be the proven success story that it is.
