Para 1.17 and
1.19
In order to maintain the day to day care for its
rescued ex-racing greyhounds, Makants’
charitable trustees supported by a team of
exceptonally dedicated volunteers raise funds
by way of store and street collectons, car boot
sales, auctons, rafes and other actvites,
such as summer and Christmas fairs and local
dogs shows. In additon, a raf of other tasks
are undertaken by the trustees and volunteers
such as administraton, social media
communicatons/updates, re-homing checks,
transportng dogs for veterinary care and
atendance at fund raising events. Raising
awareness of the plight of racing greyhounds
and educatng the public about responsible
dog ownership with an ofer of comprehensive
help to all adopters is an integral part of
Makants’ work and this is woven into all its
actvites. By way of example, volunteers are
welcomed each day to assist with the
collectve group walk which ensures each
kennelled dog receives appropriate daily
exercise, can be assessed in a group situaton
and allows individuals to ‘get to know’ the
breed and the work undertaken byMakants;

this support is invaluable on many levels. Experience to date has shown that in many instances, the rescue of an ex-racing greyhound is an acute situation whereby third parties will make the dog available to Makants at short notice with no financial donation. Dogs that are taken in are often in need of basic care and veterinary treatment, with some inevitably having more complex medical needs such as epilepsy, impacted vertebrae, gum disease, chronic fracture injuries or amputated toes giving rise to joint/mobility issues and tail injuries; all of which Makants has experienced and dealt with. Makants implements a strategy of spaying and neutering all greyhounds within two weeks of rescue unless the dog is prior neutered, in season or the veterinary surgeon advises otherwise, in which case spaying or neutering will be undertaken when advised by the veterinary surgeon irrespective of whether the dog is kennelled or adopted. A positive focus is placed on assessing and rehabilitating each and every dog received so they may be successfully rehomed and enjoy a normal life – a healthy dog is never euthanized and this is Makants’ promise to each and every dog that it receives. Each dog’s adoption is conditional and subject to the new owner entering into a written adoption agreement with Makants, whereby the new owner agrees:  to guarantee the health and wellbeing of the dog.  to maintain yearly vaccination boosters.  not to allow the dog to stray unsupervised.  to ensure the dog wears a collar at all times with owners’ details and the disc Makants provides. not to pass the dog to any third party without Makants’ written consent.  to abide by Makants’ spaying & neutering policy. to allow a representative from Makants to visit to ensure the dog’s welfare and care is appropriate.  any breach of the contract allows Makants to reclaim the dog. Each adoption is subject to the satisfactory completion of a vetting process to ensure the prospective home offered by a new owner meets the needs of the dog. Makants’ charitable trustees are aware of the statutory declaration and guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. Statement confirming Para 1.18 whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Makants has been able to maintain a highly
motvated team of volunteers who have ensured
that the care of its rescued ex-racing greyhounds
has been of prime importance and a consistent
achievement during the past year. During its
fnancial year 2022/23, Makants has:rescued
and rehomed 49 ex-racing greyhounds in line
with its strict re-homing policy and been able to
ofer comprehensive help to all adopters. It is to
the credit of all those who volunteer their
support that Makants’ was able to achieve this
rehoming rate.This demonstrates (despite the
Cost of living crisis) a consistent, positve annual
rehoming rate from 2021/22 76 2020/21 (74
rescued and rehomed ex-racing greyhounds),
2019/20 (73 rescued and rehomed ex-racing
greyhounds), 2018/19 (83 rescued and rehomed
ex-racing greyhounds), 2017/18 (91 rescued and
rehomed ex-racing greyhounds which included
by excepton the rescue, vaccinaton etc and
successfully rehoming of a brooding bitch and all
of her liter of 9 greyhound puppies (4 weeks
old)), 2016/17 (72 rescued and rehomed ex-
racing greyhounds) and 2015/16 (57 rescued
and rehomed ex-racing greyhounds) which
refects the dedicated commitment supportng
this charity.made contnuous necessary
maintenance improvements to its existng
kennel facilites. This included the upgradingof

all kennels , the inclusion of an enrichment room to enhance our rehoming process , ensuring our rescue greyhounds have the best possibility of being rehomed , the car park facility was upgraded and the new drainage system was completed in order to comply with kennel regulations  promoted humane behaviour towards the greyhounds by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for the dogs in need of attention by reason of retirement, abandonment, mistreatment or ill usage.  been able to educate the public regarding responsible and safe dog ownership, not least by its attendance at many public events where information has been made available and members of the public have been able to seek guidance and advice and necessary equipment such as leads, harnesses, coats and muzzles (if required) but also online. In December 2022 we were successful in securing support for one year from Burns Pet Nutrition as their Charity of the Year. This support was invaluable as we were awarded a supply of high quality dog food for the year December 2022 to December 2023, completely free of charge.
