- relationship with any related parties;

- trustees’ consideration of major risks and the system and procedures to manage them.

_Makants is an independent specialist ex-racing greyhound rescue registered charity funded wholly by donations. Its charitable activities do not support or promote regulated and/or unregulated greyhound racing and/or any associated activities._

## **Section C Objectives and activities**

8

## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

- _For the benefit to the public to relieve the suffering of abandoned and ex-racing greyhounds and to promote humane behaviour towards the greyhounds by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for the dogs in need of attention by reason of retirement, abandonment, mistreatment or ill usage._

- _To re-home/foster the greyhounds in line with Makants’ strict re-homing/fostering policy._

- _To educate the public regarding responsible dog ownership and to offer comprehensive help to all adopters/fosterers of ex racing greyhounds._

## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the charity commission on public benefit)**

_In order to maintain the day to day care for its rescued ex-racing greyhounds, Makants’ charitable trustees supported by a team of exceptionally dedicated volunteers raise funds by way of store and street collections, car boot sales, auctions, raffles and other activities, such as summer and Christmas fairs and local dogs shows._ _**It is noteworthy that during the pandemic and associated government restrictions, including a period of lockdown, in 2020 & 2021, Makants’ volunteers continued to fund raise by holding online auctions and other socially distanced activities.**_

_In addition, a raft of other tasks are undertaken by the trustees and volunteers such as administration, social media communications/updates, re-homing checks, fostering dogs, transporting dogs for veterinary care and attendance at fund raising events. Raising awareness of the plight of racing greyhounds and educating the public about responsible dog ownership with an offer of comprehensive help to all adopters/fosterers is an integral part of Makants’ work and this is woven into all its activities. By way of example, volunteers are welcomed each day to assist with the collective group afternoon walk which ensures each kennelled dog receives appropriate daily exercise, can be assessed in a group situation and allows individuals to ‘get to know’ the breed and the work undertaken by Makants; this support is invaluable on many levels._ _**It is noteworthy that during the pandemic and associated government restrictions, including a period of lockdown, in 2020 & 2021 - and to the credit of all those who volunteer their support, these tasks were able to continue throughout to the extent permissible by the government.**_

_Experience to date has shown that in many instances, the rescue of an ex-racing greyhound is an acute situation whereby third parties will make the dog available to Makants at short notice with no financial donation. Dogs that are taken in are often in need of basic care and veterinary treatment, with some inevitably having more complex medical needs such as epilepsy, impacted vertebrae, gum disease, chronic fracture injuries or amputated toes giving rise to joint/mobility issues and tail injuries; all of which Makants has experienced and dealt with._

_Makants implements a strategy of spaying and neutering all greyhounds within two weeks of rescue unless the dog is prior neutered, in season or the veterinary surgeon advises otherwise, in which case spaying or neutering will be undertaken when advised by the veterinary surgeon irrespective of whether the dog is kennelled, fostered or adopted._ _**It is noteworthy that** d_ _**uring the pandemic and associated government restrictions, including a period of lockdown, in 2020 & 2021, Makants’ strategy of spaying and neutering all rescued greyhounds continued.**_

_A positive focus is placed on assessing and rehabilitating each and every dog received so they may be successfully rehomed and enjoy a normal life – a healthy dog is never euthanized and this is Makants’ promise to each and every dog that it receives._ _**It is noteworthy that during the pandemic and associated government restrictions, including a period of lockdown, in 2020 & 2021, Makants’ kept its promise to every dog.**_

_Each dog’s adoption is conditional and subject to the new owner entering into a written adoption agreement with Makants, whereby the new owner agrees:_

- _to guarantee the health and wellbeing of the dog._

- _to maintain yearly vaccination boosters._

- _not to allow the dog to stray unsupervised._

- _to ensure the dog wears a collar at all times with owners details and the disc Makants provides._

- _not to pass the dog to any third party without Makants’ written consent._

- _to abide by Makants’ spaying & neutering policy._

9

- _to allow a representative from Makants to visit to ensure the dog’s welfare and care is appropriate._

- _any breach of the contract allows Makants to reclaim the dog._

_Each adoption is subject to the satisfactory completion of a vetting process to ensure the prospective home offered by a new owner meets the needs of the dog._

## _**It is noteworthy that during the pandemic and associated government restrictions, including a period of lockdown, in 2020 & 2021, Makants’ was able to maintain its conditional adoption protocol.**_

_Makants’ charitable trustees are aware of the statutory declaration and guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit._

## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- policy programme related investment;

- contribution made by  volunteers.

_As a self-funding charity, Makants relies heavily on its team of local volunteers to raise funds to cover the day to day running costs of the rescue and promote its charitable values._

_Makants has a strict policy that all rescued dogs are fully assessed, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to rehoming; in addition, specialist veterinary treatment can be required from time to time. This is where the majority of its fund raising is spent._

_Makants operates independently however is in communication with other greyhound rescues i.e. Birmingham Greyhound Protection and mutually collaborates in emergency situations to assist in the best interests of the greyhound(s) involved._

_Makants values the significant and generous support given on many levels by all its volunteers, the local community and the donations received from two generous benefactors; all contributions are appreciated and gratefully received._

10

Section D                      Achievements and performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

_Makants has been able to maintain a highly motivated team of volunteers who have ensured that the care of its rescued ex-racing greyhounds has been of prime importance and a consistent achievement during the past year._

_During its financial year 2020/21, Makants has:_

- _rescued and rehomed_ _**74** ex-racing greyhounds in line with its strict re-homing/fostering policy and been able to offer comprehensive help to all adopters/fosterers._ _**It is to the credit of all those who volunteer their support that Makants’ was able to achieve this rehoming rate given the pandemic and associated government restrictions, including a period of lockdown in 2020 & 2021.**_

- _This demonstrates_ _**(despite the continuing pandemic)** a consistent, positive annual rehoming rate from 2019/20 (_ _**73** rescued and rehomed ex-racing greyhounds), 2018/19 (_ _**83** rescued and rehomed ex-racing greyhounds), 2017/18 (_ _**91** rescued and rehomed ex-racing greyhounds which included by exception the rescue, vaccination etc and successfully rehoming of a brooding bitch and all of her litter of 9 greyhound puppies (4 weeks old)), 2016/17 (_ _**72** rescued and rehomed ex-racing greyhounds) and 2015/16 (_ _**57** rescued and rehomed ex-racing greyhounds) which reflects the dedicated commitment supporting this charity._

- _made continuous necessary maintenance improvements to its existing kennel facilities. This included the installation of CCTV (at a cost of £2,800) throughout the kennelling facility due to onsite security concerns with cameras fitted to enhance the safety of the kennelled greys._

- _promoted humane behaviour towards the greyhounds by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for the dogs in need of attention by reason of retirement, abandonment, mistreatment or ill usage._

- _been able to educate the public regarding responsible and safe dog ownership, not least by its attendance at many public events where information has been made available and members of the public have been able to seek guidance and advice and necessary equipment such as leads, harnesses, coats and muzzles (if required) but also online._

- _it can maintain an appropriate contingency fund (equivalent to 12 months’ operating costs) is maintained to support, sustain, improve and assure continuity of future operations._

- _it can fund any exceptional and urgent welfare rescues which may require exceptional and costly funding for veterinary treatment and feeding care._
