ln April 2020. we were startin8 the beqinning of tbe first Trational lotkrfown, th*n8s were 5uddenlyvery
sttsnge. Most of us had never known suchtimes as thls and were having toBet u*d to working Irom
home. not having to org8nise differentÈctivities as evewlhere was closed and having the constsnt
tho4ht that we needed to stay away from everyone as much as possible, wash OUT hands constantly. use
anti bacteria 8el as much as we could 3fter everythin8 we did and not really know l￿W kJn8 thts tsolatitin
would last.
When youa¥e used toworkingwith the communityi knowin8their needs will hève increasedand the fear.

Bef¢)réthe Pandemic we had Oom's Food Missiors deliverfood tothè communitycentre twicea week on
Tuesday and Thursday e*ning. Residents would come in and helpthemselves tovaiious items and there
would te bts0fvol￿nteers to helptilty ¢Jp oftÈnYards. these restrictive time5, the numbErs of people
involved would have been limited. the procedures of providingfood to lesidents would ￿￿Ed a real ￿think
toensufy ÈveryonÈ's safety.
A dlscussion took place and The Oasis Projetvs Managerdecided tO8et onboard and be a part of the team.
The Food Bag scherne partnership s2t up policies to ensure £￿antInesS. s(￿1￿1 distancin& perso￿1
protection and resources were all sn place. The food wagto be brought intothe ￿nt￿ during the dayand
residents would be seryed from the door. After 3 few weeks. the Big ￿31 small 8rants were to be
distribLrted again and Oasis applied for a grant to buyadditional dry8oods Itinsi packets. jars etcl that
iould be alsoEiven to residents as an addition to Dom's Fotsd Missionwhich was rnainly perishable foods.
We wÈrÈ èwarded £2.LM)O and Jackie. Ihe Projects Manager shopped at different SUPÈfmarkets. gaining the
best value for rnoney to ensure there were pler*ty of different goods on the table eacth week tO8ive away.
There was a variety of food rdnging from boxesof cereal, tin ve8etablÈs- like carrots. beans. 5weetcorn,
mushrooms. jars of j3m. tin ham. crisps. tin baked beans. tifi spaghetti. tin tomatoes. tin fruit. dried pasta.
patkets of rice. microwave rice. packets of rea£ty made tustard. jarsof rnarmaladel jars of sau￿S.
Vegetsrian jars and packets. microwave pasta meals, long life milk tea ba8s. coffee, biscuits. pasta meals in
a CUPI soap. toilet rolls. sanitary products. tOOEhpaste. and babywipes.
On averdEe. the prolett served 30-4D familles each week. Lots of the residents were slngle peopleol
different ages. families with several chIld￿n and older people. We kept a record each week of h¢)w many
households were L4sin8 the service and a breakdown if they are frdmilles with children. couplès or sinKIo
petsple living èlone. We needed to keep in mind while bLryinE PTodLKts that some residents otsly have a
microwave to heal up any fotsd, as thÈy Ilve on thelrown, told us they didn't realw crKJk a whole
meal. butsnacked a lot, while someof the largerfamilie5 needed items such as baked beans and tin
VÉ8ÈtaUes io bump up a meal ènd make it stretch further. 50 a lot of thought has to80 intogetting the
right ILx)dstosuit different lifestyles

had a couple of Committee meÈting5 usisw ￿haV5 app- which involved thÈ tru5tee5 all learnin8 new skil
on out tablets, Pcs and phenes. It's been a vÈry add year. but thanks to our Project Mana8er. Oasis is Still
alwe ano kick1￿ 8Ad personally l am l¢Joking forward to re5tartingeveryrhin8. leamin8 new skilLqand
going todifferÉ*tvenues for meals, meetiw etc.
Once we had mastered that. (wr AGM for2020which had neededto be delayed was held on 2-Zoom
-meeting which again was a new experiencÈ. We sent out a S￿rVeY to ourmem￿rS. askinE them for
stjggestions regarding activities aNI 0￿ings, to see what things ￿Idents might be interested in atteAdin8.
It h35 been a most pÈtultaryearforÈveryone with l¢xkdown lasting lon8ert￿n aryone would have
predicted. and all have coped in their own way and 211 Iwkin8 fosward to {neeti￿ up On￿ again. We hève
some interesiiw things plannedand some fvndraislryg ideas in the pipeline".
Oasis Setretary Lynth remembered.how 811 the trustees learned I￿10 havea vldeomeetinR on ￿hat$
app". so we could continue the committee meetin8s. Lynda added that the AGM for 2020was delayed rtue
toCOVID 19 restrirtions but with the trustees nÈw found skills, the AGM was held on 8 Zoom meetin&
whlch again increased the knowledgeofiethnoloBy. Lynda added. I would like to say> th¥nk youto 0￿r

prowdedforthildrenwho wert experieTrciry% problems with theired￿￿tion being disrupted.
This was a goodexample ofjointworktn8. Oasis vas workin8With Dorn's Food Mrssion. In2play* B¥ Local
and Broom8rove Comrnunitycentre to the benefit ofthe local community.

At the beginning of April 2020. we heard that our bid to Sussexcommunity Foundation had bee
suceessful. This was fundin8 forthe Oasis rnen's group which had rnn weekly. Due tovulTherable older
peoplÈ with undedyiw health conditions having to shield as a¢fvised bythe 8ovemrnent, we had to shut
the rnen'sgroup eaA¥ on, so we havÈ yet to use this furKling but itgreat to know we have funding to
enable us to restart this8TOUP Strai8ht awaywhÈn it is safe to doso.

Durirsgthe summer. thlngs had startedto ease sllghtly. and afewof u5 ventufed to a new café atf*bbs
Fam), in the Udimore tounty5ide for a reconnaissante rnission to see if the venue would be ok to take a
group. We were able tts srt o￿t51de so the￿ was plentyof fresh air. ThoLigh rules had relaxed $I￿ht￿, there
was still-the MIÈ of six- Still in place, we started to anticipate that we might ttart 8etting back to
normal soon. btrt unfortunately this was notthef2seas we had two more l*xkdowns inthe foll(winE few
months.
Op a brighter note. we managed somefundraisin8evÈm though we were Trot meeting. Val madÈ someface
covèr4ngs and had raised £65 by selling these to friends and faMi￿aTrd we sold some fabricfrom the shop
-Liberty" which raised £30 on Ebay. Holding a fete orother fundraising ideas were outof question. so
this piece offunding was much appreciated and very muth nÈed@d.
We also fecelved ￿ndits& frt¢m Isabel Blackfflan to run attivities forchildren. # grant from Auive Susse¥to
run physical actniities to help residentsto re-adjust to using tommunityveTrues agairy bLrt we were unable
to use thisfunding yet either. due to restrictions. We had fundtng from local funder5- Magdalen and
Lasher Foundation to buy food for the f￿)d bags Ètchristmas and children's actNitie5to give 3way bv
In2play at Christmas. This fuThlina enabled us to buy lots of extras toadd to food bag5 such as boxes of
stuffin8i packets of biscuits. packets of gravry. tin5 of ve8et8bles. dried pasta, tins of baked beans etc to
help tide fèmilies overthe holiday period while children were at home. This fundin8 was fealfy important.
to enable us to provide extra fcod to families in the area overthe festive time.
We importantty also received our second and third trarKh of fundln8 from the NatioThJl Lottery largegfant
that was paying forthe salary and Dn costs of ihe Projects Mana8er and the runnin8costs of the Oasis
project. This funding has bÈen vital to pay forthe running costs which still ottureven though staff are
workin8 from home. ExpÈn5es such as insurafjce. mobile phofie. Internet at the offi￿. travel Èxpenses 01
the Projects Manager, ink* paperand stamp& all these costs and no extra fundraising opportun*ties sowe
were vÈry Èrèteful for receiving thefunding and being able tocontinue to help our local residents in therr
greatest time of need. ￿rItertaInty. anxiety and income drops through ￿iNgfU￿0ughed.
Future
We are encouraged by Hastiw havinga really low rate of Infettion 8gaifi #tthis time IMaFch 20211 and
the coutstry as a whale decreasiA8 the R rale that we have tKxbked the I￿3[ pantoand walk in the at
Bedgeburyto SÈÈ spectacular Christmas IiBhts in December 2021 and we havetwo theatre shows with
feseryed tickets for 2022. WÈ have also booked a stall at a summerfete in Wtn£helsea and are putti
plans*o8etheron how we can raise funds there. We have also a had lttal man Tom, who has raised some
funds by8rowing hi5 beard quite lon8 thEn shavin8 It all off again raising funds foroasis. We thankTom for
his efforts in helping us raise funds.
The Pfojects Manager andTreasufer have attettded several Hastings volunt3ryAttion thom Meeti￿S on
the best prartice to be ￿ using communityvenues and what we can and can't do yet and intend keeping
up wlth lewslationto ensure compliance. Throvgh discussions with dtfferent people who are running
venues.11 seemed to be that people needÈd to.leel safe" when they ente￿d a buildin& so the officers
have been looking at ways we can do this by putting up posters remindiryg people to keep a distance from
each other, providtn8 hand sanitiser when theycome intothe buildingfor Oasis 8foupsi keepin8 everythin8
clean and opeTrin8 window5 and doors as much as poss¢ble fo¢fvesh air. The wlndows which have been
boarded up in the comrnunity cefitré while lockdowns wÈre happens￿ will soon be replated withglass
again and we are lookin8 forward to delivering8roups in the communitytentre Or￿ again.

We a￿ aiming for8rts￿ walks ir¢ sm3118roups. c0ntlnul￿ the lood bag scheme. and maybe
rescheduliryg 8entle exercise outside in the wamier mtsnths to limit risks. We still have funding forcooklng
session5, a sewinggroup. ti chi sessitsns, tabletennis. seated foDtb311, archery, famiEy hi5toryand for the
Oasis men'5 group, so we are lookinglorwa¥d to be able to deliverthese to residents and set OLtrsefves
w thallÈn8es in lundraising and leamlNx new skills.
With the increased needto learn new skills in di8rÉal technology we plan to re run some cla55es teachin8
how to run a z￿M meeting. wh&Y5 app groups 3nd Video calls so sin8le people, especial￿theo1der
Idents can meet up onllnÈ and not feel isojated and lonely whlle we get io thè.new nomial~.
WÉ also to ensure we retainourexistin8 members. recruit for new membets. increase our publicity
via leaflets and ouronline presen£evi3 our Fa￿bOok p3Ee ènd website to let as many residents krKJw
