TRIBAL PROJECT TRUSTEES REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021
Reference and administrative details of the charity
The charity is registered with the Charity Commission with number 1161044.
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in notes to the accounts and comply with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland published on 16 July 2014.
The trustees who have served during the year are set out on page 1.
Structure, governance and management
The constitution of the organisation was adopted on 16th April 2014 and was last amended on 03rd March 2015.
Reporting to the Service Director, the charity has two full time staff. Volunteers provide their time freely in a range of roles.
The trustees have examined the major strategic, business and operational risks which the charity faces and confirmed that systems have been established to enable regular reports to be produced so that the necessary steps can be taken to lessen the risks.
Trustees are recruited from the local communities which Tribal Project services, and as far as is practicable, recruitment is targeted to reflect both the skills that are needed and the diversity of the communities they serve. Induction training is provided to all trustees on appointment to familiarise them with the work of the organisation and to ensure that they can make an immediate contribution to its strategic management.

The charity applies salaries to all personnel commensurate with duties and that are consistent with the parameters of nationally agreed rates of pay. The Charity considers its key management personnel to be the Service Director and the Creative Director.
Objectives and activities
The key objective of the charity throughout this period of the COVID pandemic was to continue providing our vital services to substance misuse and associated mental health community within Preston and central Lancashire.
Tribal Project remained accessible to anyone who needed our support despite lockdowns and other restrictions imposed to protect against the virus. With statutory services closing their doors, the NHS and GP’s overrun we fast became the go to service for people in crisis.
It became even more important to improve the Charity structure through Trustee recruitment, as did ways to explore and secure new funding opportunities, and seeking further funding from current stakeholders to enable the charity to continue our established work that was now more needed than ever.
New, dynamic and innovative ways of communicating with our clients needed to be established along side finding larger more COVID aware workspaces and protocols.
Achievements and performance
Tribal Project continue to be the largest, by attendance, independent substance misuse and associated mental health charity in central Lancashire. We are proud of our independence and use this to react almost instantly to the needs of our community. This approach helps enables us to use our community’s voice as a driving factor in all the decision the Charity makes thus providing the support needed when it’s needed.
The need for a new structure to support the Charity was realised with the support of Lloyds Bank Foundation, a national job recruitment agency and a

dedicated consultant. Tribal Project successfully recruited a new Board of Trustees during spring 2020.
Trustee training and responsibility was delivered throughout April and the new Board was installed by May. A dedicated group of professionals all of whom had expertise in various areas that would support Tribal Project though our hardest year to date.
During the 2020/21 period this group of Trustee’s have worked to support the operational staff and volunteers and continue to do so.
With continued easy access to our services despite the pandemic Tribal Project fast became the go to substance misuse organisation in central Lancashire. With new and exciting partnerships being formed with: Local NHS hospital Trusts, GP practices, adult social services, police, housing associations and the local community. With demand for our support growing rapidly the Charity developed new ways to communicate with our clients both digitally and in person as follows:
For the first time in its history Tribal Project began to offer COVID compliant 1-2-1 appointments. With up to 8 appointments a day the need for this service was clear. Tribal Project will continue to offer this support beyond the pandemic.
An outreach service to provide support, contact, advice and friendship to people too ill or digitally unable to access help was established. This new service is something the Charity will continue beyond the pandemic
We established a new 3000 sq. metre group working space within COVID guidelines , delivering group support during the pandemic.
Tribal Project staff remained operational and Tribal project was the only substance misuse and mental health organisation in central Lancashire making these provisions to a community that was suffering the most from isolation and uncertainty.
To ensure the recovery community were aware that our support was available we began to foster new relationships with local press including, Preston Hub,
Page 3 of 6
the Lancashire Post, Rock FM and Preston FM. These new media partners helped us connect to and support more people. These relationships have grown stronger over the year and continue to this day.
During the summer of 2020 the substance misuse community in Preston began to spiral out of control. Several factors made a perfect storm: no statutory support, extra money added to peoples benefit payments, isolation, uncertainty and pressure on the NHS. Tribal Project stepped in with our ‘Community Intervention Program’. With dedicated staff and recourses going to communities in Preston suffering from this substance misuse epidemic. We immediately began to make a positive difference. With awareness support from local media, police and community leads our local referrals increase by 500% in July and beyond.
Not all our community could or would attend in person so Tribal Project reacted with ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Recovery’. A bespoke set of cognitive behavioural therapy workshops written and owned by the Charity. Delivered immediately at the start of the pandemic via audio on our popular YouTube channel these tools helped people remotely cope with their issues, addictions and anxieties during this period. Now delivered as group sessions this groundbreaking and innovative approach to substance misuse has become the core of the Charity’s group work and support.
The work Tribal Project provided during these troubled times won us the mayor’s ‘Heroes of Preston Pandemic Award’. This is something the Charity is very proud of and is recognition of the hard work and support we provided to a community that was in dire need.
It is important to recognise that the staff and volunteers showed great innovation, tenacity and dedication during the pandemic to continue to support our existing clients during Covid and to use the time to develop new tools to cope both in the crisis and now as the pandemic abates. As we have emerged Tribal Project has more clients than ever, a double edged sword, reflecting the increased need for our services, but also the trust place in us from the community that we make a difference.

TNL Awards for All
Lloyds Bank Foundation
Lancashire and Merseyside Trust
Coop Community Fund
Violence Reduction Network
Reserves policy
It is the policy of the charity to maintain sufficient funds to cover management and administration costs for a minimum of six months. At the end of this year 26 weeks costs were reserved.
2021/22 – Looking forward
Tribal Project will continue to be the best we can be for our often marginalised and overlooked community. We will continue to be the independent voice of people in recovery in central Lancashire.
We will continue to develop new, exciting and ground-breaking ways to make peoples journey into substance misuse recovery, better physically, and improving mental health and life more enjoyable.
We will build new partnerships with organisations who share our ethos and develop existing relationships that have helped us to date.
With the support of an active, driven and caring collective of Board, staff and volunteers, Tribal Project look forward to the next year with confidence and optimism. We are needed more now than ever by our community.
