Thank You

Our Directors and I GOT SHOES teams in the UK and Uganda, acknowledge and are incredibly grateful for the support given this year by individuals, monthly partners, churches, and community groups.

And it started with shoes...

Seeing the need in Uganda firsthand, ‘dreaming big’ seemed too daunting. So, we started small. We provided ten pairs of shoes. That’s it. Four years on, through your generosity in 2023, I GOT SHOES grant-making has enabled over 733 students in Secondary, Primary and Infant schools to access education in Uganda.

It’s wonderful to see their smiles and watch hope come alive in each student. Our hearts are full of gratitude for each one who has championed with us to impact lives in Uganda. Thank you 🤍

Summary of the main activities
undertaken for the public
benefit in relation to these
objects (include within this
section the statutory
declaration that trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit)
The charity trustees have complied with their duty in section 17(5) of
the 2011 Charites Act to have due regard to the guidance on public
benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers
and duties.
The World Bank reports that 712 million people, nearly 1 in 11 people
globally, live on less than $2.15 a day. Sub-Saharan Africa has the
highest rate of children living in extreme poverty, reaching 40% in
2022. The charity’s operations and objectives are fuelled by the belief
that people living in poverty aren’t victims, but individuals with
creativity, imagination, and power to change their environment when
given the opportunity.
I GOT SHOES exists to help more children access education in
Uganda. Through grant-making, we provide shoes and school
uniforms, which are stepping stones for children of all abilities and
backgrounds, giving them the right to an education.
We have learned that globally, undernutrition affects more than 149
million under-five children. In Uganda, about 3 in every 10 children
suffer from undernutrition. Through grant-making, I GOT SHOES
contribute towards school fees, which helps provide a daily meal for
each student.
It is incredibly rewarding to see the joy of children in school daily --
children are no longer made to work in fields or forced to watch
younger siblings, but instead are learning to read and write. We see
education as a key to equality, opening the doorway to greater
opportunity and freedom.
“Literacy empowers and liberates people. Beyond its importance as
part of the right to education, literacy improves lives by expanding
capabilities which in turn reduces poverty, increases participation in the
labour market and has positive effects on health and sustainable
development.” UNESCO
We’ve seen that by providing access to education, children and
teachers thrive, as do the women in the community. School fees
contribute towards teacher salaries. We empower local women by
hiring them as tailors to make school uniforms and sportswear. We’ve
seen these women gain confidence as they provide for their families.
Our focus area is linked to two key groups building longevity of
relationship and strengthening due diligence and accountability. We
currently partner with two schools in Uganda: Shalom Primary School
in Kyotera, Rakai District, and Jubilee Care Nursery and Primary
School in Kyebando, Kawempe District.
Through the provision of financial support, scholarships and the
provision of materials and facilities for education we are meeting our
objectives.
I GOT SHOES charity is voluntarily registered with the Fundraising
Regulator in the UK, ensuring compliance and instruction in regard to
safe and effective fundraising throughout the year.

IGS has also appointed a local auditor to monitor correct use of funding given to our Ugandan partners. This has been instrumental in tracking funds, verifying costs, validating receipts and minimising cash transactions.

You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:

The charity operates solely on a volunteer basis from its trustees and weekly volunteers. We have no paid UK members of staff. 100% of the funds goes to the operations and running of the charity.

Our volunteers include: our Communications and Media team who create and build our social media community across various platforms; our IGS Scholarship Coordinator and our IGS Project Manager, who gives input to our building and construction projects.

We partner with two teams in Uganda who coordinate and manage the day-to-day work of the charity. The charity is grateful for the commitment and work of its Ugandan teams and the support and encouragement of its UK volunteers and trustees.

The Charity does not have any investments, all income is used for operations and any surplus is held on deposit for use in operations.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity
during the year
Helping more children access education …
It starts with shoes …
Seeing the need in Uganda firsthand, ‘dreaming big’ seemed too
daunting. So, westarted small. We provided ten pairs of shoes. That’s
it. Four years on, through the generosity of our donors and partnerships,
in 2023, the grant making has enabled over 733 students in Secondary,
Primary and Infant schools to access education in Uganda.
Senior school scholarships
Picture: Our students at Light Academy, Rakai Uganda.
In 2023, 24 students were active in our Senior School Scholarship
programme. Of these students, 15 are girls, and 9 are boys. On average,
14% of Ugandan students attend Senior School. Despite these statistics,
extended families still pressure older students to return home and help
provide for younger siblings. This is their reality. Their immediate needs
are pressing to override the long-term gain of education.
Despite resistance, we know each student is learning Christian values
with academic and vocational skills. Most of all, they are protected from
early marriage or forced labour. Knowing this fuels our work. All 24
students completed their year of study. 21 have progressed to the next
level. 3 have graduated!
Senior school scholarships
Celebrating girls …Through our scholarship programme, we are raising
awareness that 130 million girls worldwide have no access to education.
In Uganda, if funds for school fees are limited, boys will be chosen over
girls in a family.
Educating girls can help pull families and communities out of poverty’.

We are thrilled that three female students have successfully graduated
from the I GOT SHOES Senior Scholarship programme. Each have
individually completed their two-year vocational training. We’ve tracked
their progress; excitedly, each now earning income in their fields of
hairdressing and tailoring.
Upskilling / After graduation …
Anitah was one of the first to put her skills to use. Initially, she was hired
by her vocational school to make uniforms for fellow students. Now in
Kampala, Anitah is upskilling her tailoring knowledge from our IGS team
of women who make the uniforms for our students. She is currently
apprenticing under Justine, our team manager, to learn the entire
business process of budgeting, purchasing, and making the uniforms from
start to finish.
Anitah’s backstory: She grew up in a rural, impoverished community in
Rakai District, Uganda. She was older when she sat her PLE (Primary
Leaving Exams) and academically struggled. Yet, she desired to learn
tailoring and one-day help contribute to the welfare of her family.
Through I GOT SHOES scholarship program her story is very different
from many girls in Uganda. The more we learn about gender roles in
Uganda it continues to fuel our ‘why’. Inequality and gender roles in
traditional, male-dominated societies are key barriers to girls receiving
education.

Section D Achievements and performance

Thank you for helping change the narrative for these beautiful lives in Uganda. Student Spotlight: We are so proud of Lydia. In her first term reports, she scored Outstanding in most of her subjects – hitting top marks in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. She shares, “thank you for providing my school fees, shoes, uniform, books and other services. I am working hard to have a better performance than the year before. I pray to God to help me so I can fulfil my dream of being a pharmacist in the future. I also request you to pray for me that God help me fulfil my dreams and have a bright future”. We’re thankful for our monthly partners whose contributions help keep young students, especially girls, in education. Successfully supporting senior students: “Firstly, want to take this opportunity to thank you very much for your provision towards me this term. I thank you for the school fees you have paid for me and the pads you provided for me. I know that if it was not by your help, I would have been home now because my parents do not manage to afford all that amount you pay for me a term. I appreciate my lovely parents. I thank you very much tor the support! May God bless you so much.” Nakito Sarah, S1 student. Community Impact: In 2023, we welcomed Tausi Kutessa to our I GOT SHOES team. She's employed as a grant-supported coordinator in Uganda. Tausi provides excellent financial oversight of school project funds and collaborates with Justine, our production manager, to produce fantastic uniforms at the best cost. Tausi also works as our Senior School's Coordinator. She visits our students, keeps communication flowing, and helps track their academic and vocational progress. We're thrilled to have Tausi on board. Your generosity is making a difference, not only in student's lives but women's as well.

Community Christmas : £1,528 given to support families associated with the school and those needing extra support in the community.

Primary Schools: It’s more than shoes … Teacher Spotlight: Teacher Winnie & story/quotes.

It is such a joy to be greeted by students, teachers, and parents each time we arrive at our schools: Shalom Infant & Primary School, Rakai and Jubilee Nursery & Primary School in Kampala. Nothing prepares you for the sheer excitement, enthusiasm, and gratitude, especially from the families. Two completely different cultures jointly transforming the narrative for these beautiful children. In 2023, I GOT SHOES provided grants of £35,454, 68% of our expenditures, on shoes, school uniforms and school fees for our students. The school fees provide 19 teacher and staff wages for both partnering Primary schools. And supplies a daily meal for each student. With just £70 you can support a child for an entire year. Thankfully, we’ve kept this cost the same for the past four years. Join us in making a lasting impact in the lives of these children!

Shalom Primary School:

Foot washing Story : Displaying a cultural shift: children matter.

Before distributing uniforms and shoes, basins were brought to wash the children’s feet. It started with Ben, the director of Shalom Primary School, and Gary washing the feet of these beautiful ones.

In John 13, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. This moving act changed the lives of his followers. Ben prayed for new beginnings and belief to step into their destiny over each child. Teachers and staff joined in. Later, Ben shared, "This will be a story they tell their children one day. Whether it was the head teacher, the Mzungus, or me … they will remember the blessing spoken over them. And that no one has done this before."

Impact & Collaboration … Shalom Main Hall & Kitchen …

Over £21,851 raised for Headteacher’s House, Main Hall & Kitchen.

In March 2023, during our visit to Shalom, we saw the staff cooking outside over an open fire during the rainy season. Witnessing this firsthand, we stood under an umbrella with the headteacher and began dreaming together. This moment inspired us to believe in the right partners to help with a Main Hall & Kitchen Building and a Headteacher’s House.

Having no dining hall or large meeting room at the school, students and staff eat in the open but are restricted to classrooms in rainy weather. A new kitchen and a multi-purpose hall will help make our children and staff work environment much safer and protected. This all contributes to our children and staff having a brighter future.

With a generous donation of £10,485 from Low Country Community Church and more funds from individuals, we were able to begin building the headteacher house in late autumn.

We’re incredibly grateful to The Rotary Club of Brentwood, UK who contributed £5,500 towards our Main Hall and Kitchen at Shalom Primary School in Rakai. These funds provided Solar Panels for the student classrooms as well. £5,000 also was given by local partners Skylark Community Church Chelmsford. The hall project has turned out to be huge and has extended into the next year’s budget.

Our hearts are full of gratitude for these additions that bring value and inspiration to the students, staff and community.

We’re thankful, too, for local partners who have how expenditure has championed our heart to keep children in education in Uganda.

We’re touched by the generosity of members and friends of Saint Nicolas Church, Ingrave and St Stephen’s, Brentwood for raising £478 to purchase 32 pairs of shoes for our Ugandan children. After we visited their church to thank them, one member was moved to do another fundraiser. A special thank you to Eric F. who stepped out and decided to raise additional funds for I GOT SHOES by playing hymns at the church. He raised over £646 going towards more Senior School Scholarships.

Total incoming resources for the year were £70,252. The charity’s principal source of income is donations received £59,907. Grant Aid of £5,179 and Gift Aid £5,166 making the remainder funds. Total expenditure for the year was £52,313. 3% went to the cost of running the charity, of which 1.6% were bank transfer fees. The remaining 97% went directly to the charities work in Uganda. More funds were raised this year for building a 2100 ft main hall and kitchen for Shalom Primary School, which use of funds and construction will continue in 2024.
