## **Structure, Governance and management**
The charity is constituted as a charitable incorporated organisation governed by a trust deed dated 17 December 2014 and registered as a charity on 11 March 2015. New trustees are appointed by the Trustees and serve for a term of three years (renewable).
## **Objects and achievements of the Charity**
The objects of the charity are:
- the promotion of the arts, focused on but not limited to music, for the public benefit in East London through the provision of arts-based events and activities for the community at a very low cost or for free; and
- the promotion of the arts in education for the public benefit in East London through the provision of arts-based educational projects in the community; and
- the advancement of the arts through engagement with high calibre exponents of a range of performing and visual arts.
The main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects are the commissioning and premiering of new pieces, engagement with local youth music provision in performance projects, and the engagement with university level music making.
The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.
In this year, East London Music Group began to increase their activities after the Lockdown Restrictions, returning to live performance and embarking on new partnerships.
ELMG has a long-standing commitment to educational and community music work and in 2022, ran a pilot partnership with a Waltham Forest primary school that saw professional musicians work in the school on a variety of activities over the course of a term. The objective of this partnership was to inspire children, normalise participation in music-making, and foster a culture of musical excellence that can inspire everyone at the school to engage with music and reap the benefits it can offer. It was a great success that saw ELMG take over the

school for a ‘Music Morning’, create and run a School Orchestra for a term and lead music CPD sessions with teachers.
In addition, ELMG were able to rehearse at the school and invite children to observe rehearsals for the concert ‘Re:Sounding’ which took place at Rich Mix in May 2022. This was the first large scale performance for ELMG since Covid and was an exciting and innovative program of contemporary music. The program featured two new commissions: ‘Phoenix Fanfare’ by Leo Geyer and ‘Insert Expletive Here’ by Ella Jarman-Pinto. In addition, ELMG also performed previous commission ‘1936: An East London Uprising’ alongside John Adam’s exhilarating Chamber Symphony. The concert was a success with great audience feedback and two new exciting commissions to add to their repertoire.
The successful relationship with Queen Mary University has continued in providing the vocal and instrumental tutors for the Music Scholars at the University – with lessons taking place online and in person. This, mutually beneficial partnership sees ELMG and QMUL work together to select the tutor for each scholar who will then be engaged through a contract with ELMG. In return, ELMG receives a small administration fee for finding and contracting the teachers. This ensures that QMUL Scholars are always receiving first rate tuition and are best placed to further their musical activities.
ELMG were invited to perform Paul Edlin’s ‘Frida’ in two performances at QMUL and Deal Festival of the Arts. This was following the well-received premiere of ‘Frida’ at Oxford Festival of Arts in 2019. ELMG were delighted that award winning soprano, Katie Bray was able to join them again for these performances.
## **Reserves**
The trustees consider that minimum level of general reserves that should be retained is £7,000
to meet expenses as they fall due.

## **2 Basis of accounts preparation**
The accounts are prepared on a cash basis with income being recognised when received and expenditure recorded when paid.
## **3 Charitable Funds**
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the charitable objectives.
Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors as to how they may be used.
## **4 Grants received**
During the year, unrestricted grants of £13,000 ware received from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the Charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in
accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
- I report in respect of my examination of the Charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the
- 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by
the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
- I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in
connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Charity as required by section 130 of the
Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records.
- I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with
- the examination to
- which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the
accounts to be reached.
