The trustees submit their annual report and the financial statements for the year ended 28 February 2023
## **Structure, governance and management**
The Charity became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation on 9 March 2015. The Charity became registered with the Charity Commission on this date, number 1160799.
## **Summary of the objects of the Charity**
The objects of the charity are the relief of people affected by dementia by:
1. Supporting them in achieving recognition of their specific needs;
2. Advising their families in order to find appropriate services for them;
3. Ensuring statutory services and other relevant organisations are aware of their needs and the needs of their carers; and
4. Advancing the education of the general public in all areas relating to dementia.
## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit**
Difficulties with access to the homes has continued this year. The ability to visit residents has remained restricted despite the lifting of coronavirus regulations.
This has meant that access to the homes has remained limited and the charity has not been able to get involved with life in the homes as was previously the case.
We have, however, provided some funding for activities to support residents and to help them enjoy life despite the limitations.
## **Summary of the main achievements during the period**
## Funding for a second “Magic Table”
The funding for the second “magic table” remains in the charities accounts at the end of this financial year. However, plans are in place to install the magic table equipment as early in 2023 as possible.
A Magic Table is a little box that can be mounted on the ceiling above a table within the nursing home. In the box is a high-quality projector, infrared sensors, a speaker and a processor that work together to project games onto the table. Because the colourful objects respond to hand and arm movements, residents can play with the light itself.

The company which supplies the table develop games for specific target groups, such as people with dementia. They believe that play can contribute to everyone’s health and quality of life. They aim to make play accessible for people living with dementia and in that way, to inspire as many people as possible to have fun and get moving. The Magic Table improves the level of activities in care homes and helps people to live better lives with dementia. It connects older people in the late stage of their dementia journey with each other and their surroundings, all the while stimulating movement. The games can be played both independently and with supervision.
Throughout the year we have been in contact with the supplier to secure the equipment and Birch Avenue to try and obtain permission to install the equipment. We are currently waiting for the home owners, South Yorkshire Housing Association, to give final approval.
We are grateful to the Freemasons and family members who worked so hard to provide the funding to make this possible. This specialist equipment will provide a reat deal of benefit to our residents and families.
## Funding for Christmas decorations and activities
We provided funding for Christmas activities which helped to ensure that residents enjoyed the Christmas festivities. We also provided money for other activities in the homes which were arranged by staff and which help to enhance the experience of our residents.
## Providing support with visiting arrangements.
Relatives have remained very concerned about the restrictions on visiting within the homes. We attended some meetings with relatives to try and resolve the problems they were encountering. This issue is unresolved and ongoing.
## Providing support with Continuing Healthcare assessments
We have supported relatives who have asked for our help through this process. The process has been revised but it remains difficult and confusing for many relatives. Transitioning from funding provided by the Council to Continuing Healthcare can also prove problematic and relatives have found it helpful to understand the different funding streams which are in place.
## **Plans for future periods**
We still need to finalise the installation of the Magic Table in our second Nursing Home. Hopefully this will be completed early in 2023. Visiting remains restricted and we hope to help get these restrictions eased over the coming year to enable life to return to something more normal for our relatives and residents. We will also continue to support relatives regarding Continuing Healthcare assessments when asked. We continue to raise and provide money for projects which are identified as helping improve the quality of life for people with severe dementia.

## **Reserves policy**
The Charity has free reserves of £5820 at the end of the year (2022: £5,575). The Charity aims to hold sufficient reserves to pay outstanding creditors which is £NIL (2022: £NIL).

## 85 Lives Campaign
This fund was established to fight for the residents’ right to stay in their homes. This involved challenging the (then) Sheffield CCG over its assessment process as well as raising funds for

legal costs associated with this aim. The fund received a large number of donations from individuals as well as organisations.
## Tovertafel
This fund was established to purchase two “Magic Tables” which provide stimulus and social activity for people with mid-to-late stage dementia. One table has been purchased for Woodland View.The second table for Birch Avenue will be purchased as soon as possible.
BirchAvenue Support 67 group have placed £4,600 from their funds into these accounts as part payment for the purchase of the table.
