Dear Trustees

## **KD-UK, Kennedy's Disease UK**

## **Charity Accounts – Period Ended 28 February 2023**

Thank you for providing the additional information I required; this has enabled me to finalise the accounts which I enclose herewith for your review and approval.

I am also pleased to report that we were able to resolve all queries that arose during the accounts preparation process.

My comments are as follows:

- Turnover for the year was £55,800 (this compares to £70,379 for the previous year).

- Net increase in funds was £25,932 (this compares to £34,504 for the previous year).

- Net assets at the year end were £199,628 (this compares to £173,695 at the previous year end). This indicates the amount of profit generated at the year end that has been left in the charity.

Please read carefully through the accounts to ensure that they are complete and correct to the best of your knowledge and belief and if the accounts meet with your approval, please click “sign” to electronically approve the accounts.

If you have any queries and/or would like a meeting to discuss the accounts in detail before signing then please contact my office to arrange a mutually convenient appointment. However, if you feel that a meeting is not necessary, then please let me know.

On receipt of the electronic signed accounts, I will sign the Independent Examiners Report and send this back to you for you to submit to the Charity Commission.

Finally, please do not hesitate to contact me if any of the above is unclear.

With best wishes

Yours sincerely

**KD-UK, Kennedy's Disease UK Report of the Trustees for the year ended 28th February 2023**

The Trustees present their report together with the financial statements of the Charity for the year ended 28th February 2023.

The accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis and comply with the Charity's governing document and applicable law.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives**

The objectives of the Charity are to raise awareness of Kennedy's disease in the general population of the UK, to raise funds for research into understanding the mechanisms of the disease with a view to finding suitable treatments and to provide support for Kennedy's disease patients, carers and carriers.

## **Aims, Objectives, Strategies and Activities for the year**

The objectives of the Charity are to raise awareness of Kennedy's disease in the general population of the UK and raise funds, through sponsorship events, for research into understanding the mechanisms of the disease with a view to finding suitable treatments. In addition, the charity aims to provide funding for clinical support of Kennedy's disease patients and carriers. In planning activities for the year, the Trustees kept in mind the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

## **Charitable Activities**

KD-UK has continued its commitment to support the salary of the specialist KD nurse at UCLH in London and has agreed to support a research physio who will also have some clinical commitments. Although COVID had an ongoing impact on fundraising activity during the period, the charity ran a successful road trip from Los Angeles to Rome during the year and some of the sponsorship receipts fell into this accounting year. The charity funded and held a very successful patient day in London and further events are planned for 2023. The charity is taking the lead on running an International KD Conference in London in 2023.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## **Financial position**

Total receipts for the year amounted to £55,800 (2022 - £70,379) and expenses were £29,867 (2022 - £35,875). Unrestricted reserves at 28th February 2023 amount to £199,628.

## **Reserves Policy**

The Trustees have reviewed their policy, considering recommendations by the Charity Commission with regards to maintaining an acceptable level of reserves. The charity has set a reserve of £20,000. This is sufficient to cover KD-UK's very low overheads during a lean fundraising year.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**

## **Governing Document**

The Charity was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) on 9th March 2015 and commenced operations immediately.

## **Trustees**

Trustees are elected and removed by the Board of Trustees. The maximum number of Trustees shall be 8 and the minimum shall be 4.

The power to appoint new trustees is vested in the existing trustees. Future trustees will be selected to ensure the board maintains a suitable mix of skills and experience to continue its work and will be given an appropriate induction into the Charity. Trustees attend training courses where it is considered necessary.

## **KD-UK, Kennedy's Disease UK Report of the Trustees for the year ended 28th February 2023**

## **Organisational Structure**

The Charity is managed and operated by the Board of Trustees who meet at least twice a year.

## **Major Risks**

The Trustees have carried out an assessment of the major risks to which the Charity is exposed. Procedures and systems are in place to mitigate these risks.

## **STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITIES**

The Trustees are required under Charity law to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of the affairs of the Charity and of the financial activities of the Charity for that year. In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departure disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the company will continue in business.

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with applicable laws and regulations. They are also responsible for ensuring that the Charity maintains an adequate system of internal control designed to provide reasonable assurance that assets are safeguarded against loss or unauthorised use and to prevent and detect fraud and other irregularities.
