Introduction

Our Annual Report highlights the differences we have made to the community of Ystradgynlais and neighbouring communities across Powys and Neath Port Talbot during the year 1st April 2020 to 21st March 2021.

Who we are

YVC is a registered charity. We work with volunteers and the third sector to improve the wellbeing of people in Ystradgynlais and neighbouring communities. Together we aim to build a rich and vibrant community through our work in Volunteering and Recycling.

Collaboration

• We know first hand that for voluntary organisations to meet the challenges of the future we must work together, to organise and look ahead to prepare for the future. We continued to collaborate and connect with local people, organisations and services through strong partnerships.

We continue to provide a resource to our partners to facilitate activities at the centre - for example workshops for people who want to learn the craft of stick making.

Trustees’ Report

Welcome to YVC annual report for 2020-2021. Last year’s report highlighted the challenges of Covid and the pandemic continued to have a significant impact on the work of the centre throughout the period detailed in this report.

As Trustees we would like to thank the staff and our volunteers for their ongoing commitment and dedication to the centre and to the local community. We are proud to have played a key role in supporting members of the local area throughout the period of the pandemic.

The achievements of YVC during the period 2020 /2021 are set out in this report, but we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the main areas of focus. Before detailing these, as Trustees we would like to acknowledge the hard work undertaken by Ian Hawkins, Donna Davies and Alison Rodwell who worked hard to build firm foundations for the future growth of the centre and much of our work has been to continue the good work they started.

Transformation to improve our services and sustainable future of YVC

The pandemic led to the centre being closed for much of the period covered by this report. This time was used to continue to consolidate and secure the future of the centre. Working practices for staff have continued to evolve and stronger accounting procedures have been developed.

Continuing to enhance the services we offer to the local community. During the height of the pandemic the number of volunteers was increased to build capacity to support the local community. The food bank is now wellestablished and it is responding well to the increased demand. Christmas 2020 was marked with a day for children to visit, enjoy games and receive gifts. There was a Christmas card competition involving local schools and Christmas hampers were delivered.

Looking Forward to 2021/2022.

2021/2022 will see further development and the consolidation of achievements at YVC. A new branding ident which better reflects the work and activities at the centre is being considered. The community cafe is developing well as are a variety of public workshops. The location of the food bank is changing within the centre to provide a more discrete service for the public. Work is going ahead on the community garden offering YVC the opportunity to develop relationships with new partners for a long term and sustainable project.

Volunteering

A vibrant and enriched community is where every person feels connected to their community through active participation in volunteer related activities - YVC promotes the value of volunteering and enhances the range and quality of volunteering opportunities and experience.

Our Achievements

A major achievement is the significant improvement in recruiting and placing of volunteers over the reporting period. 140 volunteers were placed. The diversity and support that volunteers provided to local business and community projects has made a real difference.

Working with our communities to value the importance of the three ‘Rs’ to protect our environment - reduce, reuse and recycle

• to promote and educate the environmental and economic benefits of reduce, reuse and recycle

• to conserve and protect the physical and natural environment through the reduction of waste

• and the promotion of sustainable waste management

• to re-purpose household and other goods for sale or use in the community

Buying Social - Ethical & Sustainable

Ystradgynlais Community Recycling is proud to be a Social enterprise.

Social Enterprises are changing the world for the better. Our aim is to create positive social change. When you buy from a social enterprise you are choosing to spend your money with a business that is giving something back. A social enterprises helps to create employment, help to improve people’s life chances, provide training and employment opportunities, support communities and help the environment.

Helping those in most need

We are regularly called on to support social services and community partners in rehousing a cross section of people from, families in crisis, to those needing emergency new housing because of; domestic violence, eviction - to people who are destitute and have had to flee their homelands (immigration) so as to avoid persecution. Over the year we have helped many families in need through: the provision of household furniture, bedding, clothes and other support. We also ensure families are signposted to other agencies and support groups for financial and other help. We also make a valued contribution to assist integration people into the community.

Ethical & Sustainable Purchasing - Buying Preowned Items

We promote conscious purchasing choices to encourage consumers to make environmental choices.

Saves Money Preowned items are a lot more affordable than purchasing the same or similar product new.

Helps the Environment

Choosing to purchase items, that may have ended up being thrown away, even though the item is in perfect condition prevents the amount of waste that reaches our landfill.

Getting more for your money

Taking the time to have a look and explore will allow you to have a wider choice and you may find an item that may be just as good quality or even better.

Excitement

Everyone loves finding a bargain. It may require a little more time and effort, but nothing beats the feeling of finding an item for a fraction of the price.

Our Partners - Corporate Donations

We have a number of partners. We would like to thank in particular our major donations from key partners below.

The recycling and reuse of their donations has diverted several tonnes of waste from landfill.

The Commitment by these large organisations demonstrate their corporate, social and environmental responsibilities to facilitate support at grass root level.
