Derwentside Trust reviews it policies and procedures annually and has these confirmed at the AGM held in April/May of each year. The charity has five trustees, two of which are directors of the limited company which is registered with companies’ house, registration number 09227225.
The trust works closely with Durham County Council who offer advice, guidance and support as well as monitor compliance in relation to health and safety as well as ensuring the building is fit for public use.
The major challenge for 2021/2022 is to develop and build a community kitchen and improving the security access to the building. This was a plan for the last year ending March 2021 however was severely hampered by COVID-19. We have developed the charities branding and introduced our community pantry has grown considerably in this year in support of food provision in the local community, especially with COVID 19 and supporting the local community with food parcels. We are also utilising the website more, social media and community awareness. We have a public use defibrillator that can be accessed from outside the building 24 hours per day. 365 days per year and will be registered with the North East Ambulance Service. We did achieve our goal of obtaining a community minibus and this is now being used more effectively following relaxation of COVID rules. As a result of our full maintenance and repair lease, we are able to further develop Derwentside Trust and grow our charity for the benefit of our community. We are continuing to develop our community fridge and freezer which we have now named the community pantry as well as a clothes bank to support people in the community that need to use this service. We are also planning during the next financial year, a more robust funding mechanism that will help us to grow considerably as a charity.
It is not deemed by the trustees that there are any major risks within the charity, at present the charity is self-sufficient with the services that it offers. We are continuing to run as Derwentside Trust, however have plans to change this to Glenroyd House in the coming financial year, however this may flow into the next year given COVID restrictions and funding opportunities for the charity. We have a 30-year lease on the premises, this gives us much more scope to provide further services and we plan to develop this further in the coming financial year.

Section D Achievements and performance
Section D Achievements and erformance p
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Derwentside Trust has made some considerable progress in 2020/2021 especially with the Pandemic and supporting the local community with food delivery, prescription collection and delivery service, mental health packs, children support and support for key workers, scrubs made for the NHS, patient packs made and a considerable contribution to the local community to help and support vulnerable people and those in need of support with signposting, calls to people who are isolating and lonely, delivery of newspapers and magazines, a DVD and book loan service and patient packs for children and adults in hospital. We also developed considerably the holiday hunger for the local community with activities and healthy food for children and families with games, information sheets and developmental games and activities all designed to support education during a time of need. We also had for the first year our Glenroyd Grotto which was a major success and something that we will be developing over the coming years as this was greatly appreciated and very welcome by the local community.
We have also improved the marketing and awareness of Glenroyd House with a new website planned, social media awareness heightened and a planned brand change. We aim to put Glenroyd House on the map and grow the charity further. Having the long-term lease, will now afford Derwentside Trust to apply for grants and funding which will support the further development of the building and improve it for more public use. We have now achieved the goal of obtaining our mini-bus and this is available for the community to use. We have improved the overall security of the building with a controlled access point introduced and have plans for a community kitchen to provide a further service to the local community such as community meals, supporting holiday poverty and a communal café. This is our main goal for the year ending April 2022, this being the case, it may run into the following financial year due to COVID restrictions and fundraising, however we are very hopeful that in the next charity report we will be reporting the success of the new kitchen. Overall this has been an incredibly challenging year, however it has also been a very rewarding year given that we have achieved so much in terms of supporting the people in our local community and helping them during this time of need with COVID and also our NHS and local services for the excellent work they do to support our people of which we thank all of them. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people, families, businesses, Durham County Council and the Derwent Valley Area Action Partnership and local Councillors for their support this past year which has been greatly appreciated to help us to help our community.

Further financial review details (Optional information)
You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:
-
the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);
-
how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;
-
investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.
Derwentside Trust is a local charity that is funded mainly by the services that we offer in terms of room hire to members of the public, accommodation services for other charities such as food 4 u, sexual health clinics, counselling services and support for groups and individuals with learning difficulties and disabilities as well as drug and alcohol services and community learning. We also have our own community pantry and clothes bank now that supports our local community and we are very much planning on developing this considerably.
We are growing Glenroyd House and providing more and more community benefits and reinvesting any surplus back into the charity. Our business plan is growing and we aim to have the one stop shop principle for the Consett area that will develop into a major community building for all to utilise and use as well as a place for community meetings and get togethers.
Derwentside Trust reinvests its surplus back into Glenroyd House for the effective running and maintenance of the building and services that it offers.
