NAZ&MATT
FOUNDATION
hello
A message from our Chair
The work of Naz and Matt Foundation continues to
reach many More who need care and support.
This is evldent from the increase in requests to
our support service.
I stlll describe the work of our Team as a hug for the
people we support.
Individuals who identify as LGB TQl+ sadly continue to face disownment and rejection from family and
friends. The discrimination our service users face continues because of religious and culturally
conservative values.
However, we also work with parents who hold religious and cultural beliefs and are supportive to
LGB TQl+ individuals. This said, 64% of the LGB TQl+ individuals we surveyed in 2020 struggled with
mental health issues after coming out to their religious parents. Many individuals out there continue to
need our support.
Malt our Exec Director, is a very passionate and driven individual who works tirelessly to lead our Team
of staff and volunteers. This is evident because our team continues to grow. I have observed the
nurturing environment that Naz and Matt Foundation provides to its staff and volunteers.
Thank you to Matt and the Team for your continued work on introducing policies andprocesses to
ensure we provide safe care to our service users.
The continued support from our donors and the wider community enables us to carry on with the
mission of the foundation. The mission is to "never let any religion come in the way of unconditional
love between parents and their LGB TQl+ children..
We are grateful for all the support from our donors, withoutyou we would not be able to help others.
Asma Ashraf, Chair

thankyou
A message from our Founder & Executive Director
This year has been a busy year for Naz and Matt Foundation. We experienced a sharp increase in the
number of requests for help and support to our support service.
Now, with our new, trained, and highly skilled support team in place, we were able to meet this rise in
demand whilst providing a safe, caring and positive space for all LGB TQl+ individuals and parents who
came to us for help or support.
Our monthly support group continued to grow, and we began investing time and resources into
developing the foundational building blocks that will allow us to launch our new parent.led support
group (Rainbow Chai) in the newyear.
As we transition from our roots as a campaigning organisation to a front-line support organisation, we
continue to Introduce more robust safeguards, processes, policies, and practices to ensure we deliver
the best care possible lo our niost vulnerable clients who access our support services.
l arn eternally thankful to every person, business, organisation, and group who has donated their time
and financial resources to support our life-saving work in the community.
Thank you foryour continued trust and support.

Our 7 stages of
coming out
Based on our lived experiences, the hundreds of cases we've worked on, and
thousands of stories shared with us, we analysed and mapped out common
milestones that featured in most of these situations.
From this data we were able to idenlify seven common steps that were present in the coming
out journey for both LGBTQl+ individuals, and also parents of LGBTQ l+ individuals.
We now use this seven step process in our support service, It has become a valuable and
practical tool used to support our clients, to assess where they currently are, and the likely
steps needing to be reconciled on their journey ahead.
These steps will be published in detail in our new book for Feligious parents. which is currently
being worked on by our team.

Thank you so much foryour amazing work, we need more awareness like
this in the Muslim community, especially with older / more conservative
people.
It pains me a lot that some parts of Islam are closed and dogmatic, we
need a revolution of some sort and a new generation of Muslims to
create a new system / way of thinking. I really hope this can happen,

The talk that Mail delivered was extremely powerful. We are a very diverse school
and many of our pupils experience pressure from their families regarding marriage
and potential partners.
The talk empowered many of them to question what is goinq on in the Asian society

98% of thè students said they had learnt something from the session. Many
students felt able to discuss a topic they may have not previously felt comfortable
with. It touched a lot of our students emotionally, and allowed them to debate their
viewpoints with other students. Not only was it informative. it was a topic they were
eager to discuss even days later.

I was recommended to talk to Naz and Matt Foundation through one of my best friends, I
was vaguely aware of them beforeh3nd in the years past of me repressing my sexuality, and
was very much in the closet at the time, and not at all confident or keen on discussing my
sexualiiy or any personal matters to an outsider organisation.
Little did I know, I would have been a different person, with a different life, and a different
outlook on life as a whole if I had done it sooner. Much, much sooner. Alas, I regret the time
that I had wasted in prolonging my own mental anguish, for [Naz andl Matt would have
alleviated At entirely. Speaking to him has changed me, and I shall be eternally grateful.
If I could thank [Naz andj Matt with all the gold in the world, I would, if I had it. For now he
will have to settle with the fullness of my mind and heart in which he has helped rebuild, and
restore. We are still on our way, but without him. I'd never would have found the support to
do it alone.
He saved my life, he s prolonged it, and hopefully together.
I'll finally find some reason to love it again, as l used to.

Nur
I realised I could kiss another girl when I was 16. Thinking back from that moment, I
remembered the times I had developed crushes on girls throughout my life, never realising
that I had romantic feelings towards them. I never thought of this as anything else than just
a beautiful part of me, until I found out that being a lesbian and a Muslim just isn't
possible"
see, these two identities of mine was always so natural to me until the external
homophobia started to become internalised.
Then began the years long struggle to accept both of my identities. I had questions, so many
questions, and I desperately needed answers. I went online, watched all the available videos,
and read specific verses of the Quran over and over again. These sources repeatedly spoke
about even if I have these 'sinful" feelings. I should not act on them. Not act on them how?
Isn't Love one of the humanities truest sources ofjoy and peace? Why did God make me this
way if this is wrong.
The indescribable fear of passing through this precious life with a fake identity made me
desperate forhelp I needed to speak to someone that wouldn't make me choose between
my religion or who I loved. Then I lound the Naz and Matt Foundation. I was nervous when I
left my request to talk to someone. Then I got an emall Irom Matt suggestlng we speak on
the phone. He has been there for me ever since then, whenever I need someone to speak
to, witnessinq every step of my growth. [Naz and] Matt's Incredible patience, kindness and
encouragement for the past 2 years has helped me become so much more confldent In
myself.
l am no longer afrald to say these words.. l am lesbian, I love women. Not being vislble yet
does not mean we do not exist. I feel truly ¢onnected to God, and I sense God's love in

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF NAZ AND MATT FOUNDATION**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Naz and Matt Foundation (the charity) for the year ended 31 December 2023.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

- 1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or

- 2 the financial statements do not accord with those records; or

- 3 the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

## **NAZ AND MATT FOUNDATION**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS** _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023**_

## **1 Accounting policies**

## **Charity information**

Naz and Matt Foundation is a charitable incorporated organisation. The charity's principal address is 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ.

## **1.1 Accounting convention**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 “The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland” (“FRS 102”) and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities not to prepare a Statement of Cash Flows.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

## **1.2 Going concern**

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

## **1.3 Charitable funds**

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

Designated funds are funds which have been set aside out of unrestricted funds by the trustees for specific purposes.

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Endowment funds are subject to specific conditions by donors that the capital must be maintained by the charity.

## **1.4 Income**

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.

Grants receivable are recognised when there is entitlement, probability of receipt and the amount can be measured sufficiently and reliably.

- 6 -

## **NAZ AND MATT FOUNDATION**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED)** _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023**_

## **1 Accounting policies**

## **(Continued)**

Grants which cover more than one financial reporting period are deferred accordingly.

## **1.5 Expenditure**

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.

## **1.6 Cash and cash equivalents**

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.

## **1.7 Financial instruments**

The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 ‘Basic Financial Instruments’ and Section 12 ‘Other Financial Instruments Issues’ of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.

Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.

## _**Basic financial assets**_

Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.

## _**Basic financial liabilities**_

Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised.

Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.

Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

## _**Derecognition of financial liabilities**_

Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.

## **NAZ AND MATT FOUNDATION**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (CONTINUED)** _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023**_

## **1 Accounting policies**

## **(Continued)**

## **1.8 Employee benefits**

The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee’s services are received.

Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.

## **1.9 Retirement benefits**

Payments to defined contribution retirement benefit schemes are charged as an expense as they fall due.

## **2 Critical accounting estimates and judgements**

In the application of the charity’s accounting policies, the trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.
