The Trustees present their report and the fin8nual sL*ments for the year to 31 March 2021. The
Trustees. who are also dirgctors for the purposes of company law and who have served
during the year and up to the date of this rgport, are set out on page 1.

Cotswold Riding for the Disabled vras i￿pOrated on 10 June 2014. The Charity is a Company
Limited by Guarantee
Number 09080110 is registered with the Charities Commission -
Number 1160676. The unincorporated Charity transfefred ils assets and liabilits.es to the Company
on 1'Awl 2015. The CharIt￿S goveming do￿rnent is the Memorandum and Articles ofAssociation.
The Trustees confim that they have complied with the requiremènts of secttrjn 4 of the Charitses
Act 2011 to have due regard to the public b￿fil gU¥jan￿ wblished by the Chaity Commission
for England ar￿ Wales.
Trustees are appoinbj to p05t by rr￿ibefS at the Annual General Meeting. The board will COwOPt
new Trustees as and when required during the year and their apwinlmenl referred lo the
subsequent AGM for confimiation. The bwd maintains and re￿ewS a sknlls audit and new
appointrnenls are recommended based on the need to maintain an appropriate range of skrlls,
experien￿ that wll support the organisation in delivering the business plan. New Trustees undergo
a briefing on the organisation. its aims and objectives and their legal obligations under Charity and
company law. All Irustees are encouraged to undertake addilKJnal training as their roles and
Interests requlre.
The Board undertakes an annual review of the organisation to ensure that the business plan. fund
raising strategy and staffing structure are al￿ned and wll supw)rt the strategic objectNes a￿1
operational delivery plans. The Trustees are confident that they have the team and tools in pla
with which to lyjild and grow the Charrty.
The Board are committed to investing in the volunleets and wofessional staff lo make sure thstlhey
have all the support that they require and that our participants receive a professional and consistent
high4JLtality experien￿. The r￿W training scheme deveboped last year for volunteers is rev￿Wed
and up(Jaled for best practice on 8 regular baws and is supplemented with additional training for
staff and Trustees. This has been substantiaNy revised in response to the Covhl-19 requirements
arKI in preparation for a relum to regular ridirnj.
The Board undertakes a rolling revithv of thg library to provide up to date bgst practice and
support the staff and volunteers. A similar rewew of the Business Plan and Fundraising Strategy 19
also in pjace. The focus is on mainlaining the existing financial stability whilst adding new and
sustainable income SI￿arns. This wll allow us to continue to provide riding at a subsidised rate
whilst maintsining the high standards across the organisalion for which it has beo)me renowned.
Post Covi&19. the whole business model is being reviewed lo ensure that we can maintain regular
ridiThJ in a more challer¥Jing finan(aal and opgratM)nal environment.
The Charity is a member of National RidirYJ for the Disabted Association (RDA UK) based in
Warwick. tt is however a limited Company and registered Charity in its own right and relies totally
on ils own fvndraising to taise annual njnning costs of appr0￿MatelY £250.000. Existing facilities
are secured on a Iwenty-fv&year lease with theJ(K* Club al an annual pepper(x)m rent of£l.00.
In addition. the Charity ovm8 fwrteen acres of freehold gr8zing land siiuated wthin 0.5 miles ofthe
main riding arena.

We prowde therapy, enjoyment and a sense of achievement for adults and chiklren with a wide
range of physical or mental disabiltties and leamirKJ diffictjlties through a range of activities including
riding and other equine-b8sed ther8￿es. Our aim Is to help each of our parbciparts to reara) Ihelr

The board believes that w(xking collaboralNety with other organisations in the voluntary sector will
bring greater strength lo the Charity aNI bring new opportunities for disabled peotAe in the
community. We are develcying a new phase of support to the community by offering a range of
unmounted activities using our ponies and facilities such as our sensory garden. This means
reaching out Io groups involved with pecwe Ir￿ng ￿ dementia and other lrfe-attering conditions,
and family days for Sup&￿ groups for dk8abiltie&

The impact of the Cowd-19 lockdown affected ts whcAe of the financial year arKI had a signifteant
finanaal impact on the reported resulis. During the year the Chairman. Vice Chairman, General
Manager and Operations Manager met on a regular basis in order to manage the business of the
Charity. A new financtal slraty vras drafted. aThJ (>)5ts rrunimised. Staff were placed on fudough
as appropriate during the year.
Throughout the pandemiq the t#)ard had 2 prioribes. to ensure the safety and welfare of staff.
volunteers. rKlers and herd". and to ensure that the Charity ￿ best posrtioned for long tem suNival
once we were able to retum to regular ridlng.
The pandemlc has had a dispr0portic￿ale impart on the lives of our riders. In many cases their
mental and phy5iLxI health has dedined significantty, and it may lake months of regular riding to
recover. The value of our Servi￿ the support to our riders in regaining their hearth should not
be underestimated. Every £ raised goes dir• into supporting their joumey and help5 them
achieve their potential.
Riding ceased at the end of March 2020 following the first k)dtdown and plans were developed for
phased retum to riding within the emerging govemmenl guideline5 and ensuring the health and
Safety of rideT5. Staff and volunteers.
We put in place robust Covid secure pr￿dureS and opened our doors again in July wth just 8
riders. As restrictions eased. using'1 metre plus, m￿gation and training familylsupport bubbles, we
were able lo continue to build on these numbers up lo 80 bad( in the saddle. By the end of the year
most lessons were still 1.1 or 1..2 and the progress Ihat gjme ridets have made has bean

the financial year 140 of our riders had relumed to riding.

During the year riders ar￿ voluntee15 were desperatety missing their time with us. Two ckned
Facebook groups, one for riders and their families and another for volunteers, were set up and
allowed people to remain connected. Weekly newsletters. which were issued to all riders and
volunleeis. together wth increased use of social me(Jia arKI iegular website updates, helped to
keep everyone in touch.

In August we opened our Peacefvl Pony PaddcKk in our beautiful sensory walk. We were not able
lo offer riding to many of our riders due to wcial distancing. Thi5 offered a Wdy to Spend time vrith

Tea a Pony. for people li￿ng with dementia was creabj by cotsw￿ RDA a few years ago
and we welcomed over 200 peokle INing wrth dementia in 2019. As the restrlctions lifted in
2020121 we were again able to welrJ)me regularvisito￿ as ¥￿11 as new care homes tr) have

also recognise and thank the wonderful group of (Thimitted and dedi12ted volunteers who tum out
n all weathers so that the Charity can make sure Iheir achieve the very best they can

Our volunteers were als0 impacbj by the restridions impowj in the ygar. Many werg desporate
tr) come back to us as we stsrted rKlirw3 again but had to wail until we were able lo ensure a safe
environment for them and our riders. We are grateful for your patience during these difficult times
and are pleased that so many have now been able to reium to us.

Finance- Cost and Funding
In a nomk71 year. the Charity receives no govemnEnt core grants. Servi￿ level agreements or
contrads to cover revenue costs and depends ￿ fvndraising, donations, fees from riders and
funding from small and medium sized charitable trusts. This has a su¢xessful stratsgy arKI
the organisation has a long track record of achieving its targets.

In the post Covid-19 enwronment, the board exFects fuTwJraisiTrJ to become irueasingty difficult.
W6 have a strong and compelling rase for finanaal support and the board feels that the Charity is
well positioned and well rest*cted wsthin its community of funde￿ to retain a core level of financial
support. We reeognise thatwe are going to havelo work harderto achieve OTV)ing levelsof income.
The board has consequenty reVie￿Ed the fundr8lslng strategy. Much of Ihe COVKJ funding received
n the yearwas focussed on ensuring that tharities surviv￿1 the short tem) lockdowns and invested
in their longer lemi sustainability.

New trading opportrjnrties
In the SPTing of 2021. the charity estsbllshed a sUb￿diary trading company to set up ar￿ run retail
units. A costed business plan identified that this wouhj provide a significant income stream for the
charity and reduce our reliance on future fundraising. The ffirsl oudet opened in September 2021
and the flagship shop will open befor9 Chrisknas 2021. Trdding i8 strong and in line wth the
business plan.
This financial year has been one of ¢onsofidation of operatKins. Costs have been closely managed
throuohout the pandemic and our opwating mcthl has been revlsed for the new covid compliant
riding envlronmenL
Most of our costs are relativety fixed. so the potential for ￿gnI￿Ca￿t savngs was limlled. The
average Cost of caring for one of the very special ponies is £2,500 per year and the true cost of
prowding a half hour group lesson is in the region of £30.

RDA group.

Plans for Future YeaKS
To ensure we ￿ntinUe to delNer the obiectsves forwhich the Charity is established. we have a clear
path that sets out how we plan to athieve this over the nexl three to five years. These remain our
objectives. bul the fx)ard is dear that the timing and ambition exmsed in the plans may have to
be amended in the post Covid-19 enwronmenL
The Board of Trustees and management team hekj a Strateg￿ review in April 2021. We havè
established a recovery budget for finanoal year 2021r22 and work has started on a medium-lenn
strategy for the subsequent periryls. The whole team is total￿ committed to continuing lo make
difference to our disabled participants ty offering riding lessC￿S and other aclIv￿es- all wth ponies
at the heart of everythirMJ we do

Phase 11 ofthe improvements wll be the prowshjn ofthe SO￿1[ed knm7 space" project, consisting
of classrooms, offices, comfortable w0￿ng and area for participants, familieslcarers,

the Board had agreed to alhxzte £100,000 of Ils general ftjnd towards this project by March 2021.

provide a sustainable SOU￿ of income for the charity.
In the course of the next 2 yea￿, the Board wll expth olher cwortunltles to develop artematNe
income 9enerating projects.
Since the year end we have in(¥eased the numbgr ofv•POks Cotswokl RDA operates from 42 to
48 weeks a year by running through all of the schty)I holdays. We are Tunning additional rijing
Eessons on a Saturday to increase capaoty further.
At all times. Trustees are ￿nsC￿U$ of the reS￿n￿bIrty they hokl to safeguard the charrty's funds
and enter into a robust business planning and risk management exercise befor8 committing to
project.
Resem$ policy
Whilethe Chartty is developing a broad raThJeof incomfrgeneration to support its C*arita￿e activittes,
it [5 Still heavity reliant on voluntsry donations. The majority of this income must be newly generated
each year and the Trustees duly consHlerthe Un￿rtaInlieS a￿Und fv￿ling when setting the Charity's
reserves policy.
The Charity reviewed ils reseNes polry and has set its target to maintain a minimum reseNe equal
to fNe months operationd costs for 2021r22 and subsequent years. At the same time. in order to
devek)p the operation and complete Phase11. the Trustee5 have setaside funds towards this further
capital developrnent so that il can demcthte to potential donors that the Charity is able lo meet
matched funding requirements. As can be seen from the financÉal Statements that follow. the
Charity is mgeting this poltcy and has set procedures in place to ensure itis maintained. At 31 March
2021 the Charity had totsl reserves of £677.371. of whth £30.420 were restricted and £100.WI
were designated for expenditure on the new *Rrm spa￿. project. £407,368 of the remaining
reserves related to ChariWs fixgj a55ets. wlng a remainder of£139,583 of free reserves.
Adherence lo thls polw has ensured thatcash reserves were available atthe start ofthe pandemic.
These balances gnsured that the Charity was able to suryive the lockdown and post Covid-19
challenges. The subsequent receipt of effleryency and recovery funds has ensured that the level of
reserves is now bad( to the levels Klentified ￿thin this pollcy. During 2021r22 further i))nspJeration
will be given to the appropriate financi￿level of reserves staled in the pollcy.
Pay poll¢y for key management personnel
The Trustees consider thal the Board of Trustees. The General Manager and the Operations
Manager comprtse the key management persomel of the Challty in charge of directing and
controlling. running and operating the Charity ￿ a day to day basis.
All Trustees give of the￿ time fredy and no Trustse recewed remuneration in the year. Details of
Trustees. expenses and related patytransactK>ns are dwtosed in notes 10 and 19 tothe accounts.
The pay of the General Manager and other staff revvwed arnually based on perfomiance and
nomially increased in accordan￿ wth average eamings. The remurkeralion is set to ensure il is fair
and will attract and retain staff of the appropriate c81ibre and experience required by the Charity.
The Charity relies mainty on the donalh)ns and grants to supwt ils charilable aclivilies for whic*
the Trustees woukj like lo acknowledge and thank those parties for their continued support.

Th8 Twstees havg prepared budgets that they befieve are prudent and onty include donations and
grant income which can be substsntiated. Accounts are monitored by way of a monthly finance
report to the Board and bkmonthly finan(aal revlew at Board meetings.
Cost saving measures are made and induded in thc6e budgets where they th not D)mpromise the
health and safety of the staff, volunteers. participants and ponies.

Covid-19 impaGt on the Charity's business and the whder ecwomy. Financial security 18 key and
the board are monitoring this on a regular basis.
At the lime of the signing of the acojunts. the Tnjstees expect that income wll (￿￿tinUe to ree4)ver
as rider Conffiden￿ grows and the impact ofthe pandemic comes under contrcA. They expect cash
balances and reserves to remain strong and that the Charitywill be able to meet ON1gat￿n8 as th8y
lall due for the next 12 mnths from approval of these financial statements. For this reason, the
Trustees continue to adopt the goiTrJ concgm basis in the financral statements.

give a true and falr view of the stste of affairs of the Charity and of the surplus ordgfficlt of the Charrty
