Hawkurst U3A – Charity No. 1160653
Trustee’s Report for Year ended 31.3.25
Aims of Hawkhurst U3A
The advancement of education, and in particular the education of older people and those who are retired from full time work, by all means, including associated activities conducive to learning and personal development, in Hawkhurst and its surrounding locality.
Finance
The Hawkhurst U3A finances remain healthy. We have been able to help some groups with the purchase of equipment, which continues to be available for any group to use if needed. Go Cardless continues to be a huge help to the membership secretary, groups, and trip organisers and especially our treasurers, as well as members themselves. 321 members are currently signed up, and only 64 paying by cash or cheque. Go Cardless is also used, wherever possible, for payment in advance for lunches and outings. Accounts records are kept on the U3A Beacon system.
Membership
Annual subscriptions this year have remained unchanged at £20. At the start of the year in April 2024, our membership stood at 358 members and has now grown to 385. We have a natural loss of people moving away, becoming ill, resigning etc so this growth is pleasing, and we continue to gather new members almost monthly.
Communications
Our Newsletter is now bi-monthly and continues to be important to keep our members abreast of what has happened recently. Our monthly diary provides our members with a quick look up for Group and other meeting dates. We use Beacon to circulate both but still have a few members who need to receive a paper copy. Group Leaders can also use Beacon to email group members, some also using it to record Group financial activities.
Social Activities
During this year we have visited: - Weald and Downland Museum, Chatham Dockyard, The National Gallery, Hammerwood Park, Rye walking tour and a theatre trip to see Pirates of Penzance. There have been monthly pub lunches to which all members are invited., together with monthly coffee mornings and a Christmas lunch.
Publicity
Local events such as the Hawkhurst Summer Fete are usually supported where our publicity leaflets and example monthly diaries were available. The local free paper has included our monthly meetings and speakers in their What’s On section when they had space. We found this generated a steady stream of potential new members.
Interest Groups
To date we have 51 Interest Groups some of which have been running since our u3a started. All Group costs are covered by the Group members. This includes room hire, refreshments, additional equipment etc. This has continued to work successfully in this last year.
Our monthly meetings continue at the Baptist church hall.
