Charity Structure, Governance and Management
The Zuri Project Uganda is run by its board of trustees and is governed by its constitution, adopted on 26 February 2015. We hold between four and six trustee meetings every year to discuss the ongoing progress of the charity in relation to the strategic plan that we developed in 2015 upon our registration. Minutes from each meeting are recorded and signed by the chair of the board. The day-
to-day running and administration of the charity is the responsibility of Ross Young, as agreed in writing by all trustees. We have recruited a team of volunteers in the UK to help us with fundraising, event organisation and marketing of our charitable objectives. At every trustee meeting, we discuss our roles as trustees and consider the feasibility of recruiting new trustees in accordance with our Equal Opportunities Policy. Trustees are appointed or reappointed at our Annual General Meeting.
Objectives and Activities
The objectives and activities of The Zuri Project Uganda are:

The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing items and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.

The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing or assisting in the provision of education, training, healthcare projects and all the necessary support designed to enable individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient.
In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.
Achievements and performance
We sincerely acknowledge and appreciate the steadfast support of our valued partners—the Church of Uganda, the Diocese of Kinkiizi, and the Opportunity Africa Organization—in enabling and enhancing our efforts at the local level.
Impact on Funding
Similar to last year, our work in Uganda has been impacted by funding constraints. We have struggled to replace the long-term funders we lost following the pandemic, but we’re still actively seeking support for our ongoing work in Uganda.
This financial year ended on a positive note, as we secured a significant donation to support Kishunju Nursery and Primary School, where we’ve worked for many years. We also entered a promising partnership with a UK-based business, which we hope may yield funding in the coming years.
Supporting Key Projects Despite Financial Challenges
The small amount that we spent in this financial year went to Kihembe Vocational Secondary School. We contributed to a community-wide fundraiser to help with the construction of a new multi-purpose building at the school, which is part of the site’s long-term development plan.
One of our proudest achievements is the construction and continued support of this secondary school, so we were happy, albeit in a comparatively minor way, to contribute to its development once again this year.
Reserves policy
Our free reserves, held as cash at the bank, were £3,255. These funds are held to meet any unforeseen expenditure that may occur and to fund the next phase of projects, whereby a more substantial amount of finances is required. We aim to hold reserves of at least £500 and no more than £10,000 at year's end.
Given the challenges we’ve faced since the pandemic, our main sources of funding have changed significantly. After working with several businesses and organising UK-based fundraising events, our recent focus has shifted to approaching individual donors within our network and engaging businesses via their corporate social responsibility strategies.
We hope these new funding streams will serve us well as we plan new projects throughout the coming years. All donations received are unrestricted.
