Charity Structure, Governance and Management
The Zuri Project Uganda is run by its board of trustees and is governed by its constitution adopted on 26 February 2015. We hold between four and six trustee meetings every year to discuss the ongoing progress of the charity in relation to the strategic plan that we developed in 2015 upon our registration. Minutes from each meeting are recorded and signed by the chair of the board. The day to day running and administration of the charity is the responsibility of Ross Young, as agreed in writing by all trustees. We have recruited a team of volunteers in the UK to help us with fundraising, event organisation and marketing of our charitable objectives. At every trustee meeting we discuss our roles as trustees and consider the feasibility of recruiting new trustees in accordance with our Equal Opportunities Policy. Trustees are appointed or reappointed at our Annual General Meeting.

Objectives and Activities
The objectives and activities of The Zuri Project Uganda are:
-
The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing items and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.
-
The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing or assisting in the provision of education, training, healthcare projects and all the necessary support designed to enable individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient.
In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.
Achievements and performance
We sincerely acknowledge and appreciate the steadfast support of our valued partners—the Church of Uganda, the Diocese of Kinkiizi, and the Opportunity Africa Organization—in enabling and enhancing our efforts at the local level.
Impact on Funding
This year, our work in Uganda has faced significant challenges due to funding constraints. Many of our regular donors who paused their contributions during and after the COVID-19 lockdowns have, regrettably, not resumed their support. Most notably, we have experienced the loss of three major funding contributors: The Rotary Club, Arden Academy in Knowle, and Bora Coffee Co. The absence of this critical funding has significantly limited the scope of our activities in Uganda compared to previous years.
Nevertheless, as we approach our tenth anniversary, we remain optimistic. Our trustees and volunteers are determined to explore new funding opportunities to sustain and expand our work in the Kanungu district of Uganda. Despite these setbacks, the Trustees have reviewed our financial position and are confident in continuing to adopt the going concern basis for preparing the annual report and accounts.
Supporting Key Projects Despite Financial Challenges
Despite the significant financial constraints we faced this year, we are proud to have maintained our commitment to two of our key initiatives in Uganda. Our continued efforts at Kihembe Health Centre II and Kishunju Nursery and Primary School reflect our unwavering dedication to improving healthcare and education in the local community, even in the face of limited resources.

Developments at Kihembe Health Centre II
Building on the refurbishment of the main building at Kihembe Health Centre II, which we successfully completed last year, we have continued to enhance the facility by providing muchneeded ancillary equipment. This latest initiative marks another significant step in our ongoing commitment to supporting the centre and improving healthcare delivery for the local community. Repairs and maintenance at Kishunju Nursery and Primary School
We have been a long-time supporter of the school, and we undertook general repairs and maintenance to keep buildings watertight. We are delighted to report that during our time supporting the school we have built four classrooms (permanent structures) that can withstand the test of time, as well as the local weather conditions.
Reserves policy
Our free reserves, held as cash at bank, was £617 (2023: £1,216). These funds are held to
meet any unforeseen expenditure that may occur and to fund the next phase of projects whereby a more substantial amount of finances are required. We aim to hold at least £500 and no more than £10,000 in reserves at year end.
The principal funding sources are individually led small scale fundraising events such as cake sales, pub quizzes and sponsored physical challenges; personal monthly and annual donations via direct debit; donations via the Charities Aid Foundation and corporate partnership donations. All donations received are unrestricted.
Declaration
The Trustees declare that they have approved the Trustees’ Report above.
Signed on behalf of the Charity’s Trustees on 20 November 2024.
