Objectives and Activities
The objectives and activities of The Zuri Project Uganda are:
-
The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing: items and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.
-
The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing or assisting in the provision of education, training, healthcare projects and all the necessary support designed to enable individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self sufficient.
In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.
Achievements and performance
Laptops for Kihembe Secondary School
Our trustees were happy to fund the purchase of laptops at Kihembe Secondary School to support the school in its first steps as a computer learning hub. As a vocational secondary school, Kihembe can now teach kids crucial IT skills that will help them in today’s modern world. We also sent money to buy a solar system to help the school charge the laptops, as well as a connection fee to the local electricity supplier to connect the school to the grid, as electricity was recently made available in the area.
Developments at Kihembe Health Centre II
Our primary focus of funding this year was on work at Kihmebe Health Centre II. We partnered with the Church of Uganda to undertake this work and were delighted to fund the renovation of the main building, as well as the purchase of new essential equipment for the maternity ward and health centre more generally. Part of the project was funded by Rotary and other funds were obtained from our various other fundraising efforts. Below is an overview of what we achieved at Kihembe Health Centre II this year:
Project Aim & Scope
The aim of this project was to secure funding for the renovation and provision of key equipment for Kihembe Health Centre II, located in Kihembe, Kanungu District, SW Uganda. Thanks to the generous support of a number of donors, we raised sufficient funds to start the project in Autumn 2022.
We planned this project in collaboration with a number of local stakeholders, including the Diocese of Kinkiizi, Opportunity Africa Organization, and the Management Committee for Kihembe Health Centre II. We were supported in the UK by the Rotary Club of Stourbridge and a number of individual donors, to whom we’re incredibly grateful. This report is primarily for the benefit of our donors, to highlight the excellent work that their donations have facilitated.
To refresh your memory, the following videos indicate the condition of Kihembe Health Centre II before we undertook this project:

Project Objectives
We started this project with two primary objectives:
-
To completely renovate Kihembe Health Centre II (inside and outside) and to complete the half-finished building at the bottom, that could be used as a second ward.
-
To provide essential equipment that the Health Centre lacked in order to support the staff with their day-to-day operations.
We’re delighted that we achieved both objectives, and the project was a resounding success, as illustrated below.
Project Outcomes
Phase one of the project saw us purchase the necessary equipment, thanks to a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Stourbridge. We purchased the following:
-
Microscope
-
Steriliser, gas cylinder & hose pipe
-
Screen for patient privacy
-
Drip stands
-
Glucometer
-
Beds and mattresses
-
Stethoscope
-
Thermometers
-
Electricity connection fee

One of the new beds and mattresses. We purchased 5 beds and 5 mattresses in total. It was difficult to take photos of the entire ward, as every time I visited there were patients present, and I didn’t want to intrude on their care. We also purchased new sheets for all of the beds.

New Classroom at Kishunju Nursery and Primary School
Thanks to funding acquired by one of our long-time supporters – Becky Kealey – we were able to start work on a new classroom block at Kishunju Nursery and Primary School in August 2022. We were delighted to be able to finish the classroom to provide the students with a permanent room in which to learn. It follows the three classrooms that we have built in previous years in our attempt to add permanent structures at Kishunju that can withstand the test of time, as well as the local weather conditions. Photos below show the finished classroom.
