Charity Structure, Governance and Management
The Zuri Project Uganda is run by its board of trustees and is governed by its constitution adopted on 26 February 2015. We hold between four and six trustee meetings every year to discuss the ongoing progress of the charity in relation to the strategic plan that we developed in 2015 upon our registration. Minutes from each meeting are recorded and signed by the chair of the board. The day to day running and administration of the charity is the responsibility of Ross Young, as agreed in writing by all trustees. We have recruited a team of volunteers in the UK to help us with fundraising, event organisation and marketing of our charitable objectives. At every trustee meeting we discuss our roles as trustees and consider the feasibility of recruiting new trustees in accordance with our Equal Opportunities Policy. Trustees are appointed or reappointed at our Annual General Meeting.

Objectives and Activities
The objectives and activities of The Zuri Project Uganda are:
-
The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing: items and services to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.
-
The prevention and relief of poverty in Uganda by providing or assisting in the provision of education, training, healthcare projects and all the necessary support designed to enable individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient.
In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.
Achievements and performance
New classroom block at Kihembe Secondary School
We continued our excellent relationship with the staff, parents, and directors of Kihembe Secondary School and were delighted to fundraise for the completion of a new classroom block at the school. Our efforts ensured that the initial building work could be completed and the classroom was ready for its use as a computer lab and library. After finishing this project, we looked at different ways of acquiring the necessary equipment for the school, as explained below.
Computers and books for Kihembe Secondary School
We partnered with UK-based charity Books 2 Africa, who agreed to send educational supplies to Kihembe Vocational Secondary School. We paid for desktop computers, textbooks, and reading books to equip the recently competed classroom block, so that the school was able to transform it into a computer lab and library. Due to shipping delays, by the end of this year the school had not yet received the books and computers sent by Books 2 Africa, but we are hopeful that they will arrive in Uganda in the very near future.

Financial review
Reserves policy
Our free reserves, held as cash at bank, was £8,913 (2021: £5,812). These funds are held to meet any unforeseen expenditure that may occur and to fund the next phase of projects whereby a more substantial amount of finances are required. We aim to hold at least £1,000 and no more than £15,000 in reserves at year end.
The principal funding sources are individually led small scale fundraising events such as cake sales, pub quizzes and sponsored physical challenges; personal monthly and annual donations via direct debit; donations via the Charities Aid Foundation; corporate partnership monthly donations; Rotary Club £1,500 (2021: £1,497), Arden Academy £2,760 (2021: £4,136) and Bora Coffee Co. £2,208 (2021: £2,361). All donations received are unrestricted.
Covid-19 impact on funding
This year, our efforts in Uganda were negatively impacted by funding restraints because of Covid-19. Some of our regular donors temporarily paused their contributions during and after the lockdowns, which meant that we couldn’t do as much work in Uganda as in previous years. Still, we were very happy with the projects that we were able to implement and we’re hopeful that our trustees and volunteers can look for new funding opportunities in the future, to continue supporting our work in Kanungu district, Uganda. The Trustees have concluded that they can continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the annual report and accounts.
Declaration
The Trustees declare that they have approved the Trustees’ Report above.
Signed on behalf of the Charity’s Trustees on 20 January 2023.
