ANNUAL TRUSTEES REPORT – YEAR ENDING 2024
Overview
The year 2024 has been a year of consolidation, renewal, and forward planning for London Sharad Utsav (LSU). Following the transition to the CIO Foundation model approved in the 2023 AGM, the Board has worked to strengthen governance, enhance financial transparency, and align operations closely with the charity’s core objectives — to promote Indian culture, heritage, and community cohesion in the UK.
We have continued to build upon our strategic collaborations with the British Council, the High Commission of India, and partner organizations in education and banking sectors. These partnerships have further established LSU as a trusted cultural institution within the British-Bengali diaspora and the wider multicultural landscape of London.
Key Events and Achievements
1. Rabindra Jayanti 2024
Our annual celebration of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary was held in partnership with The Nehru Centre, London. The event featured musical, literary, and theatrical performances from members across the UK, reaffirming LSU’s commitment to preserving Bengal’s literary and cultural heritage.
2. Durga Puja 2024 – “Harmony in Diversity”
Marking our 17th year, the flagship Durga Puja was hosted at the historic Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, an iconic cultural landmark in Ealing. The event attracted an estimated 8,000 visitors over five days, making it one of the largest community celebrations in the London Borough of Ealing. The inauguration was graced by distinguished guests from the High Commissions of India and Bangladesh, symbolising unity and shared cultural identity.
Enhanced digital ticketing, sponsorship automation, and volunteer scheduling systems were implemented this year, resulting in improved crowd management, visitor experience, and financial traceability.
3. Financial Governance and Digital Modernisation
Building upon the automation framework introduced in 2023, the charity has now fully migrated to digital accounting and compliance monitoring. Cash transactions were further reduced, ensuring alignment with Charity Commission guidelines.
Risk management, receivables follow-up, and budget forecasting are now standing agenda items in all Trustee Board meetings. LSU recorded steady financial health, supported by sponsorships, donations, and a growing membership base.
4. Membership and Community Engagement
Our membership grew to 170 registered members along with families in 2024, with a renewed focus on youth participation and next-generation leadership. LSU hosted multiple community workshops and mentorship programmes to engage younger members in leadership, arts, and volunteering.
Governance and Structure
Following the successful transition to the CIO Foundation Model, all governance functions and fiduciary responsibilities now rest formally with the Trustee Board. The constitution was reviewed and ratified to ensure consistency with the Bengal Heritage Foundation and compliance with Charity Commission standards.Finances were aligned and structural loans and debits etc were structured where necessary for reporting purposes between BHf and LSU.
The Board held four statutory meetings in 2024, supplemented by sub-committee sessions for finance, sponsorship, and cultural curation. The new Foundation model trustees are now in place and will continue governance as per amended constitution. The current set of trustees will remain in position for Three terms of 3 years unless and only if they voluntarily resign.
The board also elected a new trustee Anamika Sarkar to the trustee board.
Acknowledgements
The Trustees extend heartfelt gratitude to every volunteer, sponsor, and partner whose support has made 2024 another remarkable year. The dedication of our members continues to be the cornerstone of our success.
We also thank our strategic partners – The British Council, The High Commission of India, The Nehru Centre, and our valued sponsors in education and banking sectors – for their ongoing collaboration and encouragement.
A special vote of thanks to all departing volunteers who have served LSU with distinction and to our new members bringing fresh enthusiasm into our cultural mission.
