Structure Governance and Management
The Trustees present their report together with the financial statements of the Charity for the year ended 30th June 2025. The accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis and comply with the Charity’s governing document and applicable law.
The Society of St Columba is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission with number 1160486.
The Society was established as a membership organisation, with the trustees and between two and 12 individuals as the only members.
During the year ended 30th June 2025, the trustees of the Charity were as follows:

Objects
The Society is established with objects to advance the Christian Religion. Its stated intent is to do this by the establishment of a new monastic community which will live in line with Christian principles of sustainability, environmental protection and stewardship, based particularly on the Celtic tradition.
Achievements and Performance
The Society works closely with its co-tenants of the site, Columba’s Barn CBS Limited, to advance the objects of the Society. This included managing the site and its small flock of rare breed sheep in an environmentally sensitive manner and in accordance with its principles. The Society continued to make grants to Columba's Barn CBS for the repair and improvement of the farm buildings.
In terms of its activities:

As part of succession planning, in March 2024 Nick Graham-Smith was appointed as Community Co-ordinator to supervise operations and activities on site.

Following receipt of a generous grant from Horsham DC, the team were able to commence work on the restoration of the barn which will become the Education Centre.

Community Days continued to take place on a weekly basis attended by a small but dedicated and growing group of volunteers which included repairs to the four main doors in the Great Barn, making other buildings weatherproof, and growing produce from the market garden.

Other spiritual / social events were arranged occasionally.
Financial Summary
The Society ended the year with a cash balance of £869.

Reserves Policy
Most activities of the Society have been carried out by volunteers on an unpaid basis. The Society’s current policy is not to hold committed reserves.
Public Benefit
The Trustees affirm that its activities are carried out for the public benefit and have had due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance.

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of the Society of St Columba (‘the CIO’)
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the CIO for the year ended 30 June 2025.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

The accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
