Covid-19 and Going Concem
The figures induded in these finan(?al statenEnts gNe some indicatton of howthe pandemic has impacted on

Govemment supwrL
Significant additional costs (for PPE and other equipment) were incurred in the lockdowns, but much Lif thi¥
was recovered under the various Govemmenl initiatives. Similarly. Bethany has benefitted from the
Governmen¥s Job Retention Scheme in recovering 80% of the salaries for a small number of furloughed staff.
Whatlhe figures do notshowis the extraordinary commitmentof Tnarry member5 of staff who worked addtiional
hours to cover isolating or unwell Golleagues. The Care Manager, Colleen Barford, led this effortwth courage
and tenacrty to support the staff and resi¢Jents in very drffi¢ult cir￿mStan￿ which have now been impacting
on us for over a year. The Trustees wish to record their gralTiude to her spectfically in this report.
Fortunatety, Bethany has substsntial financial reseTves which enable it to Tide out 'stomis° such as those
noted alx)ve so Tnkstees wnsider there is no major threal to its going concem status from the effects of the
pandemic. However. it will be important lo rebuild resident numbers as quIc￿Y as possible to mitigate th¢

We reported last year on the adverse CQC report ¢Jeli¥ere(I to the trustees in September 2019 and made
public early in 2020. Remedial action was taken arKi Bethany has re¢eived verbal indicatsons that we have
done what was required. However, the CQC made a relum visit in May 2021 and raised other points requirin9

Matters on which we are required to report by exception
We have nothing to report in respect of the following matters in relation to which the Charities (Accounts and

sufFicient accounting records have not been kept or
the financial statements are not in agreement wth the accounting records,. or
we have not received all the infortnation and explanations we require for our audit
Responsibilities of trustees
As explained more fully in the trustees, responsibilibes statement Iset out on page 41, the trustees are
responsible for the preparation of financial statements which give a true and fair view. and for such intemal
control as the trustees determine 15 necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free
from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
In preparing the financial statements, the trustees are resF)onsible for assessing the charity'5 abil-rty to continue
as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable. matters related to going concern and using the going concem
basis of accounting unless the trustees either intend to liquidate the charity or to cease operations, or have no
realistic alternative but to do so.
Auditovs responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free
from material misstalemenl, whether due to fraud or error. and to issue an auditorfs report that includes our
opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in
accordan￿ with ISAS (UK) will always detect a material misslatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise
from fraud or error and are considered material if. individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be
expected to inflijence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these financial statements.
Irregularities, including fraud, are instances of non<ompliance with laws and regulations. We design
procedures in line with our responsibiltbes. outlined above. to detect material misstatements in respect of
rregularities, including fraud.
Because of the inherent limitations of an audil there is a risk that we will not detect all irregularities, including
those leading to a material misstatement in the financial statements or nOn￿mpliance with regulation. This
risk increases the more that compliance with a law or regulation is removed from the events and transactions
reflected in the financial statements. as we will be less likely lo become aware of instances of non-compliance.
The risk is also greater regarding irregularities occurring due to fraud ￿ther than error. as fraud involves
intentional concealmenL forgery, collusion. omission or misrepresentation.
A ftjrther description of our responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements is located on the Financial
Reporting Council's website at wvdw.frc.org.uklaudilorsreswnsibilities. This descripb.on forms part of our
auditor's reporL
Use of our report
This report is made solely to the chartty's trustees. as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities
(Accounts and Reports) Regulabons 2008. Our audit work has been undertaken so that we might state to the
charity's trustees those matters we are required to state to them in an auditorfs report and for no other purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by law. we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the
charity and the charity's tJustees as a body. for our audit work, for this report, or for the opinions we have
formed.
