## **Pensford Publow and The Stantons Community Trust**

## **Christmas Message 2024 from the Chair, Andrew Hillman**

I am sure that we are all absorbing the impact of our new Chancellor’s recent budget statement. Whist many of us are able quickly to assess the implications on our personal finances the ripple effect across the economy, the charitable sector and our villages and their residents will take a little longer to come through.

The good news is that PPSCT goes into this new world in a strong financial position, able to meet immediate needs where appropriate. However, our focus has always been on longer-term projects with community-wide benefits. We have a number in the pipeline, including replacing defibrillators in Pensford, work on our two wonderful church buildings and in supporting our schools with capital projects.

This year has seen several projects come to fruition. The most obvious has been the renovation of the clock on St. Thomas Becket church tower in Pensford. As well as telling the time accurately this has given a real lift to the appearance of Church Street in the middle of the village. We were delighted to provide funding for the Stanton Drew handbell ringers in completing their set with the final bell being cast at the world-famous Whitechapel Foundry.

Most recently we have seen the publication of the extraordinary book detailing the history of the various religious buildings in Pensford, Publow and Woollard. The Pensford History Group are to be hugely congratulated in bringing this mammoth piece of research to the general public. To know the key role that Pensford played in the early days of Methodism, through John Wesley’s frequent sermons on Priestdown; and the genesis of the American Declaration of Independence (John Locke of Belluton) is quite something. Further, the irony that the renovation of All Saints’ Publow, our only Grade 1 Listed building, was largely funded on a brewing fortune (Devenish) and bird droppings (Gibbs) brings a new twist to the expression “filthy lucre”!

How reassuring it is to know that the rather smaller fortunes of our members are being put to such good use in this apparently materialistic/hedonistic age. I leave you with that thought as I wish you a Happy Christmas and that 2025 is successful for us all.
