Raising Awareness
Throughout the period 1st June 2021 – 31st May 2022, Birstall BAGs have provided numerous opportunities for the local community to raise funds and develop their understanding of a variety of different cancers. The work of the charity has been significantly restricted by the COVID 19 pandemic. BAGs have continued to write a monthly column in the local newspaper. Each month the article focuses on an aspect of a different cancer or treatment for cancer which aims at raising awareness particularly to signs and symptoms.
Social media is used to promote events and publicize the work of the charity and the projects funded by the charity as well as sign posting where further information can be obtained.
Support in the Community
The Time-Out cancer support group which was run by Coping with Cancer and fully funded by Birstall Bags is now under the trading name of Sue Young Cancer Support and continued to meet bi-monthly up until March 2020, when the UK was forced into lockdown by the COVID19 pandemic. The group has only recommenced meeting since March 2022 with new staff and therapists.
The Prostaid support group has gone from strength to strength with in excess of 50 men, sometimes accompanied by their wives, meeting on the first Wednesday of each month. The group have had a variety of speakers come to the group and Nurse Specialists continue to offer advice, support and education relating to Prostate Cancer. Following the COVID19 outbreak in March 2020 the group have offered support by video call but are now back to full running. The Mayflower group has continued to be funded by Birstall BAGs offering individual and group support, coping strategies and counselling. Sessions were held up until March 2020 after which time telephone consultations were held in line with government guidelines on COVID19. The individual counselling is now under way again.
During the period 1st June 2021 – 31st May 2022, Birstall BAGs have been extremely fortunate to have received a significant amount of donations from individuals and community groups. Fundraising events such as the BAGs Annual Golf day, Memorial Football Day and a Pink Ladies night raised further funds. Following the nationwide lockdowns fundraising came to a halt and is only now going ahead again.
In addition to funding the supports groups BAGs are currently in discussions with the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) regarding donations to support resources for cancer patients. In Sept 2021 our annual Golf day gave us a massive £3100. In May 2022 a Memorial Football Day raised £2332. Our Pink Ladies evening raised through a quiz £244. Asda donated £200 and collection tins £326.
BAGs donated to Jades Retreat a local cause that provides a holiday caravan for families of sick children. BAGs donated £432 to enable the Jades Retreat cause to purchase a new patio set for the caravan.
BAGs have also donated £24 to Ward 27 at UHL to enable them to purchase stationery packs to hold patient records at the bedside.
Plans for the Future
Birstall BAGs plan to continue to provide funding for the support groups and will maintain the Monthly Cancer Corner page in the local newspaper to raise awareness of all different kinds of cancer and their symptoms. The charity will seek to support anyone raising funds for the charity. Once the situation with COVID19 allows, BAGs will plan fundraising events and opportunities. In the meantime, BAGs will look to continue to support the local community living with or caring for someone with cancer.
Reserves Policy
Birstall BAGs is committed to the long term funding of the Time Out Cancer Support Group and will therefore seek to maintain a monetary reserve of £10,000. This is sufficient to keep the group running for 2 years.
