The prinapal activities of the Trust are to
provide access to the general public, the
elderly, children and students in the wider
nchester area to experience and leam about
top quality chamèer music, underpinned by
strong Artisb"c Direction and high-qualily
playing.
The 2025 Festival, which ran from Friday 2
May until Monday 5 May was a notable
su¢cess. Winchester s Chamber Music
Festival. which is now in its 18, year, enjoyed
a huge success over the four days al the
beginning of May. A tolal of eight separate
oncerts. plus four linked events. played to
near-capacty and highly appreciative
i aUdien￿S, who realised how incredibly
fortunate the city is to host such high-class
perfomiances by inlemationally renowned
chamber musicians.
Appropriately, the Festival began with a
Schools. Con￿rt. Festival musicians had
visited Stanmore Primary School to work with
students there. On Friday morning, two school
classes performed the wonderfully imaginative
songs they had written just days before, to the
great enjoyment of an audienTr in Sl Paul's
Church.
Education was one of the hallmarks of this
yearfs Festival, which also welcorned the
Zenith Quartet of students from the Royal
Academy of Music as its Emerging Quartel-in-
Residence. They had excellent tutelage from
the professional musicians and the opportunrty
to perfomi in concerts. Following the Schools,
cOn￿rt on Friday, the Quartet play6d a most
enjoyable musical set in the ARC for people
from Winchester Go LD, the local charrty for
those with learning disabilities.
The Opening Concert on Friday aflemoon in
the usual venue of St Paul"s Church reflected

the very real ambition and diversity of the
Festival programme. Works by established
¢omposets, Brahms and Ravel, were
perfomied alongside ple￿S by contemporary
composers Pamela Harrison and George
Cnjmb. The latter's Voice of the Whale
deployed three masked musicians playing
music derived from the song of whales,
followed by a Brahms String Quintet All the
pieces. perfom)ed to an exceptionally high
standard. generated lively discussiDn at the
Friends, Reception which followed the con￿rt.
A packed St Lawrence Church in the ￿ntre of
Winchester was the venue for an atmospheric
late-nighl cOn￿rt on Friday evening. The sold-
out audience was treated to a programme
spanning the ￿ntUrieS from a sublirne solo
Ilo surte by Bach through to 3 contemporary
piece written for slring quartet by exciting New
York-based conlempor2ry composer, Inti
Figgis-V￿ueta. The following morning. an
illuminating pre-concert talk considered
Schoenberg's Importan￿ to the development
of classical music. That pre￿ded a landmark
concert on the theme of Vienna at the turn of
the 19 century, featuring pivolal works by
Mahler. Eisler. Beethoven. Schoenberg and
Schubert. In almost complete contrast, the
Saturday evening concert featLJred the folk
band ZRI who brought the house down with
their live music accompaniment lo a screening
of Charlie Chaplin's silent comic film, The
Adventurer.
Staying wlth the Ihemes of a￿SsIbIlItY and
broad appeal, Sunday moming in The NLrtshell
began wtth an uproariously successful Family
Concert on the theme of'animals.. which
anticipated a performan￿ of Saint-saens
Carnival ollhe Arpimals on Monday morning.
The Zenith Quartet then enjoyed a fascinating
masterclass from violinisl Lucy Gould.
Sunday evening comprised the Festival Gala
Concert, On￿ again this year in the Theatre
Royal Winchester. It was a true gala, beginning
th Holst's Sl Paul's Sutie and offering a
! range of classical and contemporary works,
concluding with Benjamin Britten's Simple
Symphony. Ailie Robertson's Beannachl.
omp05ed in 2024 for- and performed by-
viola-player Scott Dickinson, very much caught
the audience's imagination, as did the UK
première of a hugely exuberant Concertino for
solo darinel and strings, performed in dazzling
style by Robert Plane.

The 2025 Festival built on a newly focused
I social media strategy which helped to widen
the appeal of concerts beyond the normal
circle of attendees. With concert-goers
nationvAde reportedly booking much later, the
impact of our social media work was highly
signfficanl not only ensuring good audiences
across all the 8 licketed concerts but also
bringing in new audiences most notably for Ihe
Family Concert. Overall, the Festival made a
deficit of £5.276 owing lo increased ¢osls and
slightly lower ticket sales. but still leaves a
healthy reserve with which to enter 2026.
During the year, Trustees met fomially on
three occasions. As well as reviewing Ihe
Festival activity, Trustees continue to consider
all aspects of govemance.
