The principal activities of the Trust are to
provide access to the general publi¢, the

strong Artistic Direction and high qualtty
playing.
The 2023 Festival. which ran from 28 April to 1
May, offered a heady mix of the traditional
canonic repertoire for chamber music blended
with original concepts and educational
activities. It was a success on all counts and
has encouraged the team and trustees towards
even more ambitious ideas in coming years.
The Festival began wrth a schools,
performance involving local children wtho had
devised from scratch and then perfomied their
own orÈginal songs alongside our Festival
musicians. A perfOnTran￿ by Lumas Winds in
the community space of Winchester library
(now called the Arc) led into an opening
cOn￿rt which ranged from the première of
new work by Huw Watkins to a Beethoven
string quartet. A late-night concert of
Schubert's Winterreise song cycle completed
the day. An interartive family concert started
Saturday. yielding place to a fine mixed
Performan￿ of mostly 20 -century
compositions. Changing genres once more,
the Saturday evening concert featured folk-
fiddler Donald Grant joining the Festival
performers for his Celtic folk tunes
arrangements and compositions.
Sunday began wth a remarkable performanc8
of"Bach's Goldberg Variations arranged for
string trio. The Gala cOn￿rt in the evening.
staged in the Chapel of St Cross. included
Shostakovich, Pur￿11 and Mendelssohn. On
Monday, the master¢lass comprised Festtval
musiaans coaching young. up-and-coming
ensembles. After a talk by Huw Watkins, the
Festival Finale induded the première of a

more familiar works from the first Wiennese
School by Beethoven and Mendelssohn.
Attendan￿S al the 8 ticketed ￿n￿rtS were
1 Ooh higher than in 2022 in terms of number of
attenders and a 29% increase in money taken,
with good audiences as well for the 4 free
events. Overall, the Festival made a profit of
£8,453 leaving a healthy reserve with which to
enter 2024.
During the year, trustees met fomially on 3
occasions. They welcomed a new ¢hair of
trustees, Dr Tony Stoller, who acknowledged
the excellent and immense work undertaken by
his predecessor, Hilary Webster. A5 well as
reviewing the 2023 Festival, and beginning
plans for the 2024 events, trustees considered
aspects of governance and the potential for
further use of social media. The autumn was
notable for a fine concert in Cranboume Barn,
courtesy of Miranda and Douglas Paterson,
intended especially for Friends of the Festival.
The year was Gompleted by a salon recital for
Patrons at Ihe fine Alresford home of Rose and
Julian Milford, performed by Julian and Artistic
Director Kate Gould.

fluctuating income. The new policy agreed at
a Board meeting on 22 September 2023 is
that the Trust will hold as financial reserves

WCMFT a minimum amount of 75% of
WCMFT'S annual operational costs for the
immediately preceding 12 month period.

organisations, the Festival faces Ihe
challenge of building back after the hiatus
of the pandemic. The main risks centre

Accounting policies
The principle a￿OuntIng policies, which have been applied consistently, are as follows..
1.1 Basis of preparation and assessment of going concern
The financial statements have been prepsred in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities..
Ststement of Recommended Practice applicable lo charities preparing their accounts in accordance wlh
the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021 (effective 1
January 20151- Icharities SORP IFRS 10211, the Financial Reporting Stsndard applicable in the UK and
Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021.
Winchester Chamber Music Festival Trust is a charitable Incorporated Organisation ICIOI registered
with the charity commission Iregislralion no 11601421 in England & Wales. The CIO meets the definition
of a public benefit entity under FRS 102.
The trustees have considered possible events or conditions that might c8st significant doubl on the
ability of the charity lo continue as a going ¢oncern. The trustees have made this assessment for a
period of at least one year having considered the charity's forecast and projections. After making
enquiries the trustees have concluded that there is a reasonable expectation that the charity has
adequate resources lo conb.nue in operation for the foreseeable futuff. The charity therefore continues
to adopt the going concern basis in preparing these financial statements.
1.2 Incomo
Items of income are recognised and included in the financial statements when the charity has
enlitlemenl to the funds, and performance condib.ons attached to the income have been met and the
amount can be measured reliably.
Income from charitable actThiilies is included in income in the period in which the activity takes place.
Income received in advance of a performance or provision of other specified service is deferred until the
criteria for incorne recognition are met.
Unrestricted funds are available to spend on activities that further any of the purposes of the charity-
Restricted funds are donations which the donor has specified are to be used for particular areas of the
charity's work or for specific projects being undertaken by the charity.
1.3 Expenditure
All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and is ￿CognISed when there is a legal or
constructive obligation to pay. Expenditure items have been classified under headings that aggregate all
costs related to each category.
Expenditure on charitable activities includes the cost of performances and other educational aotivilies
undertaken lo further the purposes of the charity and their associated support costs.
1.4 Current assets
Trade and other debtor5 are recognised at the settlement amount due. Cash al bank and cash in hand
includes cash and short term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less.

1.5 Credito
Creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past
event that will probably result in the transfer of funds lo a third party and the amount due to settle the
obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised al
their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts.
1.6 Fund accounting
Unreslricled funds are available lo spend on activities that further any of the purposes of the charity.
Reslricled funds are donations which the donor has specified are to be solely used for particular areas of
the charity's work or for specific artistic projects being undertaken by the charity.
Trustees remuneration
During the period no trustee received any remunerab.on for being a trustee. Trustees were reimbursed
expenses Incurr￿ of £52612022.. £6781.
Kate Gould, received fees of £4,331 12022.. £3,180) for artistic direction and musician on the same basis
as other musicians.

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out
under section 145 of the 2011 AGt and in carying out my examlnation, I
have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission
under section 145{51{bl of the Act.
