## **The Andrew Rodger Trust**

## **Trustees Annual Report April 2020/2021**

Outline of the charity’s work – What we can provide;

**1. Training programmes for generalists in palliative/ end of life care, based on GSF (Gold Standards Framework UK) .**

**2. Research, evaluation studies and academic collaborations**

**3. Spiritual and religious support and training**

The trustees, who remain the same as last year, continue to explore how the expertise developed within the UK by The Gold Standards Framework CIC and its founder and Chairman Professor Keri Thomas OBE can be applied within the context of resource poor and primarily African countries. The objective of this work is broadly focussed on a generalist palliative care model, aiming to support frontline care providers to give better care for people in the last phase of life, to reduce the burden of care on overpressed hospitals and enable a better experience of care and quality of life for those nearing the end of life.

Monthly discussions with The African Palliative Care Association, based in Kampala, Uganda, and their Executive Director Dr Emmanuel Luyrika were undertaken , to map out potential collaborations and pilots in several African countries. This has now led to negotiations with Dr Christian Ntimizira, Executive Director of The Center of Research on End of Life Care, based in Kigali, Rwanda. The aim of these discussions is to develop a pilot project in Rwanda in 2022, of which the first step would be to develop a Palliative/Supportive care register of identified patients in Rwanda (and then in other African countries).

In July 2020 , the charity received £70k from the asset lock of the UK’s GSF Centre CIC , when it moved to become a subsidiary if Hospice UK.

The charity has now developed a very comprehensive website www.gsfinternational.org.uk , through which examples from the UK , from Africa and from other countries can be shared , with access to training resources and the GSF Virtual Learning Zone . This will be the platform for further communication and development going forward. There is a description of the origin, history and purpose of the charity, see

https://www.gsfinternational.org.uk/andrew‐rodger‐trust‐charity and a ‘Just Giving’ button enables donations to the Andrew Rodger Trust . Some of the previous work is detailed in the GSF Africa section . https://www.gsfinternational.org.uk/gsf‐africa
