## _Objective_
The objectives of Minority Matters Ltd are:
- Relief of poverty and unemployment;
- Advancement of education and training;
- Promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit;
• Promotion of social inclusion of members of the community from ethnic minority backgrounds by preventing them from becoming socially excluded, relieving their needs and assisting them to integrate into British society.
_Legal structure_
> The Minority Matters Ltd is a registered company limited by guarantee and is registered with Charities Commission.
## _Financial statements_
The directors submit their reports and financial statements for the year ending 31 August 2023.
_Policies:_
_Reserve policy:_
The charity currently operates with minimal reserves. The directors are endeavouring to build up its donor base with a view to having reserves equal to 6 months operating expenditure.
## _Risk(s) review:_
The directors have recently reviewed the major risks faced by the charity. This has resulted in efforts to raise unrestricted funds, increase charity’s donor base.
## _Responsibilities_
Acting directors are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose at any time the financial position of the company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006.
Acting directors oversee preparation of financial statements, select suitable accounting policies and make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent to give the true state of affairs of the company.
Directors are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company. They are elected and replaced as set out in the Memorandum and Articles of Association.

## _Activities and Achievements_
The charity is managed by five elected dedicated trustee members, committed to levelling the playing field and uplifting the communities we serve. The charity is staffed by 6-7 part-time staff and nine sessional workers. The office is open from Monday to Friday between 10.00am and 4.00pm.
The Charity delivered the following projects during the past year:
- Positive Alternative
- Parent Champions
- Special Somali Mums Support Plus
- County-Lines & Criminal Exploitation
## Positive Alternative;
MM delivered fourty five hours per week, free enriched educational support to one hundred and twelve, black minority ethnic refugee (BMER) children and young people, majority of Somali background, including eleven children with special educational needs. Young people also benefited from career progression advice, fun cultural activities, as well as positive activities, which included a day trip to Phasels Wood Activity Centre, end of August 2023. They enjoyed archery, team building and other outdoor activities. MM also organised bowling and trampoline outings.
MM delivered revision classes during Easter holidays and three months of exam practices to year 6s and 11s. This has helped them achieve in their SATs exams and GCSEs exams.
Parent Champions Project, Community Outreach, Community Safety Meetings and Personal Development Training; The charity engaged 860 parents, community members and residents. This included 6 personal development training sessions, 3 community conversations and one community safety workshop, organised after the stabbing and killing of a 23-year-old Somali young man, on 30/08/2023.
The charity provided safe community space, support, responding to local issues/incidents and coordinated with Islington Council.
Special Mothers Project: The charity delivered 20 yoga sessions, 19 massage sessions to 25 Somali mothers, who have children with autism, disabilities and/special educational needs. The Charity also ran coffee mornings and provided 60 hours of one2one support with accessing services and helping the mothers get support from relevant council departments.
Campaigns to stop child criminal exploitation and continued to support isolated families, whose children have been groomed and criminally exploited for county lines drug dealing. Through holding a safeguarding conference, signposting to renowned solicitors, outreach and home visits, facilitated communications with LA and Police.

The charity secured funding from Together London and helped 45 families with the Cost-of-Living Crisis and distributed food/household vouchers.
The charity strengthened our partnerships with local organisations, including Mother Tongue and Supplementary School Partnerships, organised and participated in the International Mother Language Day where our young people performed a Somali song and traditional dance.
The charity continued to be an active member of the Mother Tongue and Supplementary Schools Partnerships and connected with schools, Jigsaw, Galbur Foundation, Al-Abrar Foundation, Islington Islamic Centre, funding recipients of the Mayor of London’s Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and from Cripplegate Foundation.
The charity received funding from Islington Council, Cripplegate Foundation, The Ronson Foundation, The Leather Sellers Foundation, Cloudesley and Howden Group Foundation.
The charity helped community members to come together in times of loss of loved ones, supporting each other and tirelessly supporting the families directly affected. This was done through providing a safe space, cooking, and organising 4-community after funeral gatherings for women to pay their respect, and providing support in the family home. The charity also organised visits for council leader and community safety executive, and Somali community safety public meeting with Islington Council and Metropolitan Police, where Somali youth, residents and local Somali-led organisations shared their concerns and experiences.

Independent examiner’s report
For the year ended 31 August 2023
I report on the accounts of the company for the year ended 31 August 2023, which are set out on pages 5 to 6.
## _Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner_
The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 43 of the 1993 Act;
- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act; and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## _**Basis of independent examiner’s report**_
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## _**Independent examiner’s statement**_
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention, which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; and
- ● to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met;

For the financial year 31 August 2023, the company was entitled to exemption from audit under s477 of the Companies Act 2006; and no notice has been deposited under s476.
The directors acknowledge their responsibilities for ensuring that the company keeps accounting records which comply with s386 and preparing accounts which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the company as at the end of the financial year, and of its profit or loss for the financial year in accordance with the requirements of sections 394 and 395 and which otherwise comply with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 relating to accounts, so far as applicable to the company.

## **1 Accounting Policies**
- _1.1 Basis of accounting_
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, and have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice, _Accounting and Reporting by Charities_ (Revised SORP 2015) and the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities.
- _1.2 Incoming Resources_
Grants and donations are recognised on accruals basis.
Incoming resources are reported gross.
- _1.3 Resources Expended_
Resources expended are included in the Statement of Financial Activities on accruals basis, inclusive of any VAT that cannot be recovered.
Expenditure that is directly attributable to specific activities has been included in these cost categories. Where costs are attributable to more than one activity, they have been apportioned across the cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of those resources.
- _1.4 Depreciation_
Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost less depreciation.
Provision for depreciation of tangible fixed assets held by the charity is made at an annual rate of 25% on straight line basis.
