Our trustees, who are appointed by existing trustees, are assisted in running the Charity by committed regular volunteers. The Burslem Jubilee Project exists to relieve poverty, promote good mental health, and advance education among asylum seekers and refugees in Stoke-on-Trent by providing social, educational, and leisure activities to facilitate their integration within and for the benefit of the wider community. The trustees, in making their decisions, have had due regard to the Commission’s public benefit guidance when *Burslem Jubilee Project Charity Report - 2022** exercising powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant. *Empowering Communities, Building Resilience* Throughout 2023, Burslem Jubilee has continued its mission to support Asylum Seekers and Refugees within our community. Our work this year has primarily focused on providing essential resources, educational support, and creating a welcoming environment for refugees, particularly those from Ukraine. This report summarises the key achievements of our programmes and outlines our hopes and goals for the future. ## **Food and Clothing Vouchers for Vulnerable Families** During the harsh winter months, Burslem Jubilee provided food and clothing vouchers to 36 vulnerable families. These vouchers allowed families to purchase essential items like food, coats, shoes, hats, and gloves for their children. This initiative was critical in helping families facing financial hardship during the winter, ensuring they were equipped with the basics needed for warmth and nourishment. ## **Support for Ukrainian Refugees** In response to the influx of refugees from Ukraine, Burslem Jubilee provided targeted support through English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, clothing vouchers, and bus tickets. Our ESOL classes, held twice a week on Thursdays and Saturdays, accommodated up to 18 learners per session, though we were limited by space. These classes were vital in helping refugees improve their English, enabling them to integrate into their new community and access essential services. One of the significant challenges faced by Ukrainian refugees is the delay in accessing government-funded English courses, which are typically not available until individuals have been in the UK for at least six months. Burslem Jubilee bridged this gap by offering **immediate access to English classes**, providing refugees with much-needed language skills to navigate their new lives. ## **Success Stories: Hanna and Slava** - **Hanna** arrived in the UK without any family, friends, or prior knowledge of English. She attended Burslem Jubilee's classes twice a week and also joined additional classes elsewhere in the city. With our support, Hanna has gained the confidence to live independently and now navigates life in the UK with much greater ease. - **Slava** came to the UK with his family and had no understanding of English when they arrived. He needed support to understand the UK education system for his children and to complete essential paperwork. Through our ESOL classes, Slava learned to fill out forms and access services. He has since found part-time work and continues to attend classes once a week to improve his spoken English, while also pursuing a Functional Skills course. ## **Warm Space and Community Engagement** During the colder months, Burslem Jubilee offered a warm space where individuals could come together to enjoy refreshments and table games in a relaxed and social environment. This initiative was particularly important in providing a sense of community and combating loneliness during the winter. Charity No. 1160079 Burslem Jubilee Annual Report 2023 ## **We also facilitated visits from essential city agencies, including:** - **Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)** for legal and financial guidance. - The **City Council** , offering advice on housing and welfare. - Visits from the **Sexual Health Team** , providing health education and support. These partnerships ensured that our beneficiaries had access to a range of services to help them navigate the challenges they face. ## **Furniture and Accommodation Support** As part of our ongoing commitment to support families transitioning into new accommodation, we provided furniture to help them settle into their homes. Moving into a new home can be particularly stressful for those with limited resources, and our assistance in furnishing homes helped ease this transition for many. ## **Art Workshops and Creative Engagement** In collaboration with local arts organisations, Burslem Jubilee supported creative workshops aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of our community. Partnerships with groups such as BCB Ceramics, the New Vic Theatre, and Newcastle Common brought art and craft workshops to life. These sessions offered participants a chance to express themselves, build skills, and connect with others through shared creative experiences. ## **Christmas Support** In the run-up to Christmas, we provided toiletries and gifts to vulnerable families, helping to alleviate the financial strain many face during the festive season. This gesture was warmly received and helped spread some joy during a difficult time of year. ## **Digital Connectivity** To help individuals stay connected and access essential services, we distributed refurbished laptops and mobile phones. This initiative allowed beneficiaries to connect digitally, whether for job searches, accessing healthcare services, or staying in touch with loved ones. ## **Looking Ahead to 2024** As we move into 2024, Burslem Jubilee has several key objectives for the coming year: - Increased ESOL Provision: We hope to secure additional funding to expand our ESOL classes, offering more hours and space to accommodate a greater number of learners. This will allow us to continue supporting the growing number of refugees in our community. - More Creative Workshops: We plan to extend our collaboration with local arts organisations to provide more workshops, encouraging creativity and offering more opportunities for self-expression and personal development. - Day Trip to the Seaside: In the coming year, we hope to organise a seaside day trip for families, giving them the opportunity to enjoy a fun and relaxing day out. ## **Conclusion** In 2023, Burslem Jubilee provided crucial support to families and individuals in need, from practical assistance with food and clothing to education and creative engagement. As we look ahead to 2024, we remain committed to expanding our services and ensuring that those in our community have the resources and support they need to thrive.
