The Burslem Jubilee Project, which is also known as Burslem Jubilee, is a Charitable Incorporated Association. Our trustees, who are appointed by existing trustees, are assisted in running the Charity by committed regular volunteers.

The Burslem Jubilee Project exists to relieve poverty, promote good mental health, and advance education among asylum seekers and refugees in Stoke-on-Trent by providing social, educational, and leisure activities to facilitate their integration within and for the benefit of the wider community.

The trustees, in making their decisions, have had due regard to the Commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant.

Like many organisations 2021 has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and we have continued to adapt to the challenges.

In spite of the challenges. We still managed to support our clients in different ways. Through signposting them to organisation which were able to help them in the pandemic, door step visits, phone calls and reopening our drop in with limited numbers.

We were able to do weekly workshops online via Zoom. Two of them included Watercolour painting with an artist who was with us in the building before Covid and a workshop with Professor Stephen Dixon from Manchester University. This workshop included the British Ceramics Biennial and Stephen went on to win the best Award display called The Ship of Dreams and Nightmares which is available on BCB website.

With our ESOL and Job support, our mixture of hybrid online and in person support gave us very different results to what we expected. Due to the pandemic we had to alter the way that we delivered the project and we were also affected by the fact that, during the pandemic, asylum seekers and others who would not be recourse to public funding for college and further education were not coming into the city as previously.

However, our impact through our videos was larger than expected and the difference the project made in the lives of those who connected has been large.

Our YouTube videos which were made to supplement our Zoom sessions with this funding have had 12400 views and 300 hours of watch time.

Our private Facebook group received 121 active participants who engaged with material from the class. In addition to this, there were many views on our public page.

The employment elements of our work have been mixed. We have helped people who have been waiting for their asylum status to write CVs in anticipation for when/if they received permission to work. However, we have found the extreme swings in the job market over the past year have made it difficult. At one stage during lockdown, jobs were hard to come by, then suddenly after the reopening jobs were so easy to come by that people didn’t need our support. We also found that because our steady stream of clients receiving their papers and needing support as they moved into work slowed down due to the pandemic, our targets were harder to achieve than before. We also found several people spoke to our volunteers informally about job searching and CV writing, then got the job, but never attended anything formally.

Two stories show the success of our project:

Firstly, Sarah, who was placed on furlough at the beginning of the pandemic and for a while had a desire to go into ESOL teaching. She contacted us about volunteering, because our lessons were online when everywhere else was closed. She joined those session and gradually, with our sessional ESOL tutor, was trained to lead sections of each lesson. Sarah continued in her ESOL qualifications independently from the group and has qualified as an ESOL tutor. She was in a position that when an emergency situation arose, she was able to become the teacher in the session. This led her to gain the experience that she needed to apply to become a full-time teacher. Earlier this year, with her current job insecure as a result of the pandemic and on reduced hours, Sarah gained a job with the local council as an ESOL teacher. Without the experience of this project, she would not have had the confidence to pursue this career.

Our second case is that of Mohammed, who contacted us after being moved to Stoke on Trent as part of the Home Office Asylum Dispersal. His English was very limited and he was unable to access college courses at the time. He connected to our classes through Zoom and his English very quickly improved, to the extent that he could have long conversations with people and build relationship with people in the area. Over a year later, he now has his Leave to Remain, has progressed onto college courses and is moving to London with a job lined up working in the media industry.

We are looking forward to 2022 and continuing to adjust to a new way of running the project.
